Action Alert: Defend Universal Jurisdiction

Universal Jurisdiction

Defend Universal Jurisdiction - Lobby your MP to pledge to remove clause 152.

The Police Reform Bill has just finished its committee stage in the House of Commons and is due to be debated by MPs again in March. It includes clause 152 which, if passed, will mean instead of prosecutors applying immediately to the courts for the arrest of a war crimes suspect, they will first have to get the prior agreement of the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) for the case to be heard.

This will cause unnecessary delay in time sensitive operations and could result in political intereference.

The situation is now critical. We are asking everyone to contact their MPs to ask them to sign an amendment leaving out clause 151 due to be tabled by Ann Clwyd when MPs’ return to Parliament.

You can use this link, which includes a ready made template to email your MP.

It must be considered that there is nothing more difficult to carry out, nor more doubtful of success, nor more dangerous to handle, than to initiate a new order of things. For the reformer has enemies in all those who would profit by the old order, only lukewarm defenders in all those who would profit by the new.
