There are irrational and rational fears of Islam and hence Islamophobia.
In many areas of industrial decline and deprivation the indigenous population and the Muslim immigrant population are in competion for limited public resources and opportunities. The indigenous population have lost significantly over the years due to economic decline and have irrationally identified Muslims has the cause of this. Muslims have become a mechanism for the indigenous population to avoid taking responsibility for their own situation and recognising that they have failed to progress. From this point they have been manipulated by various politicial groups into focussing on the divisions rather than commonalities between themselves and Muslims.
Muslim for their part have retained much of their traditional life styles, defined by Islam amongst other things, and this means that they have failed to integrate. They also have clustered into certain areas which gives the impression that they have create exclusive ghettos. The traditional Muslim gender roles are very different to those of the indigenous working class and so there is suspicion and conflict.
The primary self-identification by Muslims with Islam rather than the nation state sets them apart from their fellow nationals. Repeated assertions by Muslims that they are loyal to Islam first and the nation second conflicts with the demands of the modern western nation state. The rejection of sectarianism by the modern nation state creates a situation where proponents of sectarianism are regarded with suspicion and fear. Muslim leaders have singularly failed to recognise this and thus have tended to reinforce the traditional stance. This has been compounded by certain Muslim groups attacking icons of the nation state such as the army and taking action such as book burning which echoes the darkest times of European history. This is highly indicative of state of self-imposed alienation from the majority among Muslims.
Non-Muslim leaders are at fault in failing to challenge these behaviours and demanding that Muslim leaders do more to integrate into the greater community and learn to share the same values.
The indigenous popualtion has an obligation to treat Muslims with respect. But Muslims who have sought out this state have a greater obligation to learn about this state's values and adopt them as their own, and to condemn without condition the abuses of this states priveleges by Muslims.
We are all beneficiaries of the wealth, security and opportunity that this state provides. It was not magically conjured up out of thin air but fought for by ordinary British people, often in bloody conflicts. If as Muslims we wish to live here we must respect the struggle that created this environment we enjoy and the community that created it.
If we disagree with government policy we are free to argue our case without let or hindrance. There is no mukhabarat waiting to arrest us in the middle of the night simply for expressing a legal view. This is one of the nations most free of corruption. Therefore there is no justification whatsoever for anyone using violence, regardless of whatever is happening to another group of Muslims somewhere else in the world. Such violence merely augments the Islamophobes claims.
