Which Party Are You Going To?

The General Election is over; Muslims have mobilised and voted. The defeatist and isolationists of the nonvoting brigade have finally crawled under the rock whence they came. And now Muslims are beginning to have intellectual and informed debates about not only voting but joining the political parties.

Here is an excellent article in the Muslim Weekly that perfectly sums up the new breed of empowered and forward thinking Muslims; who are not afraid of making their voices heard and ensuring that their views are as valuable as anyone's.

The Oldham Election is going to court, and that may force a by-election. The Mayoral election is due in 2012, now Muslims have to join the parties and ensure they are part of the process that nominates and then supports candidates that reflects their views and aspirations. This time increasing numbers of Muslims are voting; the challenge is to convert that mobilised community in joining the political parties and taking a fuller role in the destiny and direction of this country.
