Guest Post: Holocaust Denial – The Phantom & the Reality

'I first came across the phenomenon of Holocaust Denial when I read ‘Did 6 Million' Really Die’ written by one Richard Harwood aka Verall, Deputy-Chairman of Britain’s National Front.'
Indeed one only need recall 9/11, when it took the US authorities over 3 years before they could finally settle on the numbers who were murdered. If an advanced society like the United States had such difficulties about whether it was three or five thousand, as was initially the case, then how much more difficult was it in societies which had barely begun to emerge into the modern world?
Lest anyone doubt the fact of the holocaust, that over 5 million Jews were exterminated, in addition to 3 million Poles and at least 3 million Russians, then there is an abundance of German documentation such as the Situation Reports of the Einsatzgruppen, the SS Killing Squads which operated in the wake of the German army in the Ukraine and Russian from June 1941 onwards. They both compiled and boasted of the numbers they had murdered and they were huge. The only argument of the more sophisticated holocaust deniers like David Irving is that Hitler didn’t give a written order! In fact it is not terribly surprising that he did not put his Order down on paper. Nor was it necessary since the verbal Fuhrer Command was law in Nazi Germany (something which even the Nazi Governor-General of Poland, Hans Frank – former Head of the Nazi Legal Service – objected to.
For those interested in the subject, then I would recommend Raul Hilberg’s ‘Destruction of European Jews’, which is based almost entirely on German documents or Christopher Browning’s ‘The Origins of the Final Solution.’
But if one were to operate according to the standards of the Holocaust Deniers, then the Palestinian Nakba (‘Catastrophe’) from 1947-9 could equally be denied. No one knows, or can know, with absolutely precise definition, how many were massacred and expelled. Even the names of some villages may have disappeared for eternity. And of course Zionism has denied the Nakba, claiming that the Arabs ran away or were instructed to leave.
I say this because there are in reality two types of holocaust denier. The neo-Nazi western imperialist, who believes in a hierarchy of races and the gullible dupe, often a reactionary Arab regime, that acts as a distorted echo of European holocaust deniers, mouthing that which they do not and cannot understand.
To deal with the first briefly. The barbarism of Nazi Germany would have encompassed the wiping out of the Slav peoples - the Poles, Russians, Hungarians and Romanians, as well as Black and Arabic people. Indeed Hitler made his attitude to the colonial struggle in India and Africa explicitly clear:
To me, as a nationalist who appreciates the worth of the racial basis of humanity, I must recognise the racial inferiority of the so-called ‘Oppressed Nations’, and that is enough to prevent me from linking the destiny of my people with the destiny of those inferior races. [Mein Kampf, 363]
When the Arab Revolt took place in Palestine between 1936 and 1939, Nazi Germany offered no support whatsoever, since it supported British imperialism.
But there are many millions of people in Asia and the Arab countries who also believe that the holocaust is a myth. The bloody and foolish ruler of Iran, Mahmoud Ahmedinajad is one of them. ‘Ahmadinejad says Holocaust a lie, Israel has no future’
The stupidity of Ahmedinajad and those who echo him, are a gift to the Zionists. He plays right into the hands of the Zionists who are able to then turn round and say ‘you see, they really do want to murder every last Jew.’ But this was always the way with the corrupt rulers of the Middle East. The Saudi regime, which has financed holocaust denial publications, has also ‘supported’ the Palestinians verbally when it suited them.
Their behaviour is not only stupid but a product of an almost total ignorance. In effect what Ahmedinajad is doing is reflecting the Zionist argument, just as once the Zionists reflected anti-Semitism. Zionism uses the Holocaust to justify its expulsion of the Palestinians from their land. The Nakba has always been a crime, Holocaust or no Holocaust. In fact Political Zionism began 46 years before the onset of the Holocaust in 1941, if we take the writing of Herzl’s Der Judenstaat, or even earlier if we take account of Leon Pinsker’s Lovers of Zion formed in 1882.
And when the extermination of European Jewry was at its height, Zionism played down what was happening and even opposed the rescue of Jews to anywhere but Palestine (which was impossible). The record of Zionist collaboration with the Nazis and assorted fascist dictators is a matter of record. (see Lenni Brenner’s Zionism in the Age of the Dictators)
The problem with the argument of the Ahmedinajad’s is quite simple. Israel justifies its actions by reference to the Holocaust. So if you deny the Holocaust then Israel has no legitimacy! There is only one problem with this. The Holocaust happened. No serious historian pretends otherwise and David Irving, when he sued Penguin Books for libel, was comprehensively demolished and defeated. So, by Ahmedinajad’s argument, Israel is therefore legitimate.
This isn’t holocaust denial but historical idiocy. For sure it allows people like Israel’s Netanyahu to portray Ahmedinajad as the new Hitler. ‘Netanyahu: It's 1938 and Iran is Germany; Ahmadinejad is preparing another Holocaust’
But a moment’s thought would tell you that Iran is not one of the world’s leading industrial powers, unlike Germany under Hitler. It doesn’t have an abundance of natural resource bar oil. It has no designs on other countries, having been the victim of attack by Iraq. And surprise surprise, it has a Jewish population, the largest in the Middle East after Israel, of 25,000. Now Hitler’s Germany did everything in its power to expel its Jewish population until 1941. Ahmedinajad’s Iran, not only gives a place in its parliament (Majid) to a Jewish representative but it is determined to hang on to its Jewish community. Ahmedinajad may be a fool but a Hitler he is not.
The reality is that the so-called Holocaust deniers of third world countries are a product of outrage at the actions of Western imperialism and Israel – actions which in many cases are little different from those of the Nazis, with over one million estimated to have been killed in Iraq alone. It is a distorted form of anti-imperialism which, instead of locating the forces responsible for the creation of Israel, South Africa or any other imperialist state, focuses upon the ethnicity of those who make up imperialism’s warrior states. By using the Holocaust to legitimise its actions, Zionism encourages Holocaust Denial.
If anti-Semitism was the socialism of fools then Holocaust Denial is their ultimate idiocy.

Submitted by Q on Wed, 11/11/2009 - 12:00pm.This article is largely an intelligent exploration of the issues of the Holocaust. It is sadly let down by ill-informed comments about the current Iranian regime.
Ahmedinejad strategy in relation to regional politics has been to foster destabilisation to allow him access to the international stage, which otherwsie he would not have. Funding various "resistance" groups undermines regional states and inhibits the progress toward stability. Interantional law at present regards these proxy forces as independent and thus unconnected to Iran. Were the law to change and the international community to regard proxy forces as an extension of Iranian national forces, thus opening Iran up to retaliatory military action, then Ahmedinejad would cease supporting them immediately. By destablising Iraq, Iran became a key player in determining whether Iraq could survive intact and thus made Iran a key player thsat it would otherwise not be.
The Iranian Jewish population is effectively held hostage and there are severe constraints upon their free movement. They do not enjoy security or legal equality. The Jewish representation in parliament is tokenistic at best and not the least bit indicative of anything meaningful. Jews in Iran have value for the Iranian government as a bargaining chip, if they were killed that value would be nil. We onlu have ot look at what happened to the Bahais to see what might have happened to the Jews had they not powerful allies elsewhere.
The claims made about Zionist behaviour during WW2 are largely unsustainable and undermined by the very high level of volunteering to fight for the Allies during WW2. Despite this many Jews and Zionists believed with some reason that the Allies had abandoned them to their fate and were actively closing off routes of escape. It is therefore not surprising that some were prepared to explore other means for survival.
Mr Greenstein's conflation of the Holocaust & the Nakhba actually weakens the Palestinian potential for the creation of a nation state. The origins of both are fundamentally different and the roles of the victims (losers) are far apart. If we are to progress to a stable Palestinian state then it must be based on objective analysis of the events that led to the Nakhba from the beginniong of the 19th C, and we must institute social & political reforms to address those issues. The only area of commonality is that the long term comminal experience of the Jews and their reaction to it led to the Nakhba. The most basic difference is that the Palestinians via the leadership were active players and the Nakhba is as much a consequence of Palestinian strategies & polcies as it is the Holocaust or any other anti-Jewish action. Let us never forget that the first victims of Palestinian nationalism were Palestinian Muslim liberals who saw an opportunity for progress via acceptance and collaboration with the Zionists. The majority of Palestinians did not want this but the feudal inheritance and colonial administration condemned them to it and to them paying the price for its inadequacy.
I would be more impressed if Mr. Greenstein as a socialist was able to move beyond the blinkers of his paradigm and recognised that the Palestinian people are victims not only of Zionism but also reactionary self-serving regional feudalism which the current leadership In West Bank & Gaza personifies absolutely.
Zionists and Holocaust

Here you've done a marvelous job. No one should deny the holocaust, but no one should also forget the Muslims are paying the price for it today
On the surface this article
Submitted by The Real BB on Wed, 11/11/2009 - 4:01pm.On the surface this article seems sound. A realistic analysis of the holocaust and those who would seek to deny it is presented here.
However, I feel that this is used as a primer to compare it with the Nakhba and to once again bash Zionism, this time in (slightly) more subtle language. Just because you accept the holocaust doesn't mean I should then swallow the lies you then go on to tell about Israel and the Zionists. This is a cheap trick.

Samosa article: do you agree with this bit:
Submitted by The Biggest Zionist In The Universe on Wed, 11/11/2009 - 4:49pm."MPACUK and other anti-Islamophobic sites have a better track record of keeping their own house in order, calling out wingnuttery in the ranks and even denouncing prominent British Sharia activists such as Anjem Choudary as ‘extremist Muslim nuts’. This, perhaps, is as much a prudent response to contemporary suspicions of Muslims in politics as it is an objective ethical stance. Nonetheless, the sites are marred by reductionist attitudes to ‘Zionism’ that border on the anti-semitic, and by language that, at times, is just as threatening and hostile to site users from a Jewish background as Harry’s Place is to its Muslim readers."
Poor argument dressed up in moderation
Submitted by Anonymous Coward on Thu, 12/11/2009 - 10:46am.Sadly the author is this peace is totally unaware of the nature of Zionism, maintains a position of 'honest broker' but has no knowledge of the victims of Zionism.
He even seems to tip toe into borderline Islamaphobia by saying that there is a lack of true sincerity by groups that stand up against like the now banned ‘Al- Mahajaroun’.
Neither does he seem to know that Zionism is not the same as anti-Semitism, he seems to make a blunder that even a rookie journalist would have been aware of. To equate the two would be to side with the Zionists on this site, and in his poor attempt to remain neutral has in fact sided with those who seek to further the cause of Israel.

If that is the case can you give me an example of an accusation made against 'Zionists' or 'Israelis' THAT HAS NOT been made against the Jews at one point or other in their largely miserable history?

Submitted by Anonymous Coward on Thu, 12/11/2009 - 11:07am.What a silly point. It only shows just how the Zionists are clutching at straws that they are emplying school yard tactics. The UN accuses Israel of mass murder, must be anti-Semitism, since according to your logic hundreds of years ago the Romans accused the jews of this crime. This pitiful logic deserves nothing but a sneer and a chuckle, that Zionists are using the most infantile of arguments to prove anti-Semitism.

The Nakhbas : Arab and Jewish
Submitted by Anonymous Coward on Sun, 15/11/2009 - 1:17pm.Nothing is said on this site about in the wholesale destruction of Jewish communities in the Muslim world. Of course, we are to understand that the Muslims cherish their Jews - when there are none left to cherish. Odd.
Are the Zionists responsible?
Submitted by Q on Mon, 16/11/2009 - 1:58pm.One could argue that through the actions of the Zionists that the Jews throughout the lands of the Khalifat had forfeited the protection that Dar al Dhimmi affords and thus they these Jews were simply stripped of their possessions and driven out indicates a relatively humane approach. I think is is arguable that through the forfeiture of the indulgences that Islam affords that the Jews were more deserving of death and enslavement.
The Zionist Jews were entirely cognisant of the well established tolerances provided by Islamic governance to peoples of the book and thus they had a responsibility for ensuring that their actions did not create the circumstances for forfeiture.
The Jews had a primary obligation to sustain Islamic governments as Islam places such obligation upon them in return for the defined tolerances and indulgences they are afforded by them. Islam understands and expresses this in relation to the communal collectives and thus the majority are responsible for the actions of a minority. Zionism by its usurping of Islamic rule removed from all Jews said protections. A clear precedent exists for this in the Islamic response to the affronts of Joseph HaNagid in Grenada on 30th December 1066 and the legitimacy of the pan-Muslim response to the Zionist actions. In fact one can readily see that the Pan-Muslim responses were quite moderate and humane in comparison with these earlier events.
Neither Crhistianity nor Judaism have an equivalency of Dar al Dhimmi and that is tacit acknowledgement of the superiority of Islam over other faiths. It is from this perspective that there is no inherent conflict between the legitimate demand from Muslims in the lands of the Kuffar for equality before the law and the application of Islamic law in relation to non-Muslims in lands where Islam dominates. The political claims by political parties such as BNP to apply discrimination against Muslims and the denial of equality in some form of equivalency has no basis or legitimacy and are actions contrary to the intentions of the divine will.
I hope that you will understand why you Zionists are responsible for this situation.
More Insight
Submitted by Q on Mon, 16/11/2009 - 2:13pm.In his testimony before the United Nations Special Political Committee of the General Assembly in 1963, Shukairy said the following about the treatment of Jews by Arabs in Palestine throughout the ages:
"The question of a Jew or non-Jew was never an issue in our national life. Native Jews were simply Palestinians, just as the Muslims or Christians in the country. As in all Arab countries, the Jews were never a problem. In Palestine, they lived in amity, peace and prosperity. It is a fact of history that, when Jews were persecuted, massacred, elsewhere, they found a hospitable refuge in the Arab world, and Palestine was included. Beginning in the Middle Ages, Palestine became a secure haven for many religious Jews; the country received them with open arms. There was no idea of establishing a State, no idea of expelling the indigenous people, seizing their towns and villages and robbing their properties. So it was that a hearty welcome was extended to the Jews in keeping with Arab chivalry and keeping with Arab hospitality. These are the facts of history which no one can deny and which no one can ignore."
