Islamophobes Curtail Freedoms, Muslims Remain Dumb & Non-Political

Ed Husain, Co-Director and Co-Founder of The Quilliam Foundation

An Islamic retreat and camp was forced to cancel its event due to the campaigning and lobbying of the Islamophobic far-right. The “Islamia Village” event, was due to take place in Thorpe Underwood Estate, during the recent bank holiday weekend, however it was cancelled due to lobbyists.

The sheer irony of it all was that the far-right Islamophobes, with the help of the notorious sell-outs, Quilliam Foundation, labelled, non-political Muslims as 'extreme', a label which applies only to themselves.

There is a harsh lesson in all of this, for Muslims in the UK.

Previously, Islamophobes used to attempt to portray themselves as being against “extremist Muslims” only, and not Islam itself, in order to legitimise their position and narrative in society. Now, and increasingly more so, you have the same Islamophobes changing their position in targeting Muslims that are considered to be “moderate” and Islam itself.

Did MPACUK and others not tell Muslims that this would happen? Of course we did. At the time, it fell on deaf ears and was met by the waving of dismissive hands as well as mono-toned excuses. A passive and lazy mindset from Muslim leaders has only led to more persecution of Muslims. Indeed, they have alot to answer for.

When MPACUK advocated the simple common sense argument that getting political and defending your rights is a higher priority, than any other happy clappy or minor fiqh issue events, Muslims responded with a flurry of excuses not to become active. What do these people say now, given their freedom to pratice Islam is being taking away?

The real question for Muslims is, will organisations such as FOSIS, MCB et al, who invest more energy into Islamic Retreats, than tackling the ever increasing tide of Islamophobia, finally see where their priorities lie?

Afterall, is there much point in burying your head in the sand and enjoying your short-lived freedom at such retreats, when fascists such as the EDL are on the other side of the hill, poised to hound you for simply being Muslim?

It's time for Muslims and their institutions to finally listen and get their priorities straight.
