Thank you Mr Ahern Print E-mail
Thursday, 30 April 2009
actionalert.jpgDear brothers and sisters, MPACUK would encourage you all to write to Minister Ahern thanking him for his proposal to implement the blasphemy law here in Ireland. As you have witnessed across Europe, few politicians have rallied to the defence of religious minorities.
However, you do have a right to be protected from gratuitous offence and in a time of economic downturn, this legislation is vital in preserving social order. We have witnessed increasing vitriolic hatred on forum boards blaming Muslims for the woes of society. This amendment will put a stop to the hatemongers.

Know however that the enemies of societal cohesion and harmony are busy emailing and lobbying against this law. They do not wish their hated to be curbed, nor do they have any desire to engage difference in a civil manner.

We urge you to counter this odious campaign by emailing politicians in your constituency urging them to support Mr Ahern. We would also ask you to email or write to Mr Ahern to thank him for his courageous and noble gesture.

Truth:

Oh dear, laws to protect people from being offended.

The irony is that if these laws were actually enforced in the UK, there would be scores of muslim preachers thrown in jail all over the country. Not thrown in jail for doing anything criminal mind you. Not even thrown in jail for saying something dodgey about 'resistance' in Afghanistan etc.

Simply charged with being bloody offensive to a lot of folks.

Then you would post something about freedom of speech, igoring the whole 'right to not be offended' thing, and we'd all be back to sqaure one again. Pointless!

God Help Us:

Blasphemy laws are a step backwards into the darkness of the Middle Ages.

If you cannot take criticism, however malign of your Faith, then clearly your faith is not very strong.

Take it elsewhere.

Zameer:

I don’t see what the benefit of a blasphemy law would be. I find it hard to see how a blanket ban on blasphemy against all religions could even be workable. It would be the most unwarranted curtailment on freedom of speech. We need full freedom to discuss about and criticise any religion even if it causes offence. If there is “increasing vitriolic hatred on forum boards blaming Muslims for the woes of society” how is outlawing blasphemy going to help?

There no longer are any blasphemy laws here in Britain today. I hope they never return. To be prosecuted for defaming any religion (and that includes crazy religious cults) does not make sense. It would mean introducing an overabundance of banning and censorship.
