Ofsted received massive backlash from Muslim organisations, parents and teachers from across the country after announcing they will question Muslim hijab-wearing girls.
This included an open letter signed by 1000s of parents and teachers stating that Ofsted’s move “violate civil liberties and create a climate of fear and mistrust in schools.”
Manchester Council of Mosques, Stockport Muslims, Bolton Council of Mosques, Oldham Mosques Council and the Rochdale Council of Mosques has also published a damning statement calling Ofsted head’s statement “completely flawed”, “un-British” and “absurd.
You can read Ofsted’s statement below:
Three key things to note:
- Ofsted still see hijab solely through lens of modesty and therefore sexualisation.
- They’re concerned about schools who have “hijab as either compulsory or optional item of their uniform”
- In addition, OFSTED believes this may be a “detriment either to their learning or to their preparation for life in modern Britain”
But what is clear is that Ofsted is feeling the pressure and we need keep it on them.
