Usman Nawaz quits Crescent Community Radio due to HT influence Print E-mail
Thursday, 28 August 2008

Nawaz Usman Rochdale’s Youth MP has quit a community radio station amid claims it was giving airtime to a controversial Islamist group.

Usman Nawaz resigned from Crescent Community Radio because of worries Hizb ut-Tahrir members were being invited to appear on the station.

The 18-year-old, who had been a presenter on the station for nine years, says members of the organisation were allowed to air their views unchallenged without Crescent providing an alternative viewpoint.

Hizb ut-Tahrir, which campaigns for a single Muslim state across the Islamic world, is banned in several countries, including Germany, Holland and several Middle Eastern states, but not in the UK.

Usman, who also says his decision was influenced by the fact he is attending university in London from next month, said: "There were some key concerns I had on a personal level that made me think it was best for me to step back.

"I was concerned about the lack of management and professionalism in some of the shows.

"It is important to stress that no one connected to Crescent Radio is a member of Hizb ut-Tahrir or any other organisation like that, but my concern is that Hizb ut-Tahrir members’ views were being aired without a counter argument being provided.

"No-one was advocating violence or terrorism and I appreciate it is a community station and cannot be managed and monitored 24 hours a day, but there still should have been safeguards in place so the station gives a balanced view."

Usman cited one guest who said British culture was based on binge drinking and teenage killings.

He added: "If someone said to me Islamic culture is about extremism and terrorism I would rightly be very offended because it is a false generalisation and it was that kind of thing which I was concerned about."

Station manager Faheem Chishti said presenters were given strict guidance about the content of their shows.

He added: "We do not ban anybody, but I do agree that one or two presenters have invited some guests on too often.

"We are a community station and we do give our presenters a bit of leeway to run the shows how they like.

"But I have been explicit in the guidelines I have given them.

"We are about giving the community a voice and bringing communities together and that means giving people of all types of belief a platform to air their views."

Critics of Hizb ut-Tahrir claim it is anti-democractic and plays a role in radicalising young Muslims because it says being British and a Muslim is incompatible.

Following the 7/7 London bombings it was one of the groups then Prime Minister Tony Blair talked about banning, under new laws which barred the glorification of terrorism.

But the group rejects these criticisms, saying its proposed model of government would protect religious minorities and promote women’s rights and justice.

Resigning because of someone else's political views is childish.

HT may be 'controversial', but not illegal and not anti Islamic.

That quote just highlights how seriously negative and unacceptable HT is.

I think it was more to do with the fact that the station was not providing an alternative viewpoint.

Muslims object when the mainstream media is not objective, so we should hold our own media to the same standards.

Usman - good luck in your studies. Be careful yourself from being radicalised in the Big City. Don't worry you're not too far away from MPAC heartland!
You're right - there should be 2 views expressed!

The question is will cresent news correct the inbalance or will they allow HT to go on with out being challenged on key fundamental issues.

1. are men allowed to see pictures of naked women, or potential brides inthe buff before being married?

2. what is the place of shia's in 'their version' of the khalifa

3. for years they have demanded muslims not get involved in politics only to find out theat they have been lobbying to make sure they dont get banned.

4. when they opposed stopping the war, except by islamic means...can the same principle be applied to not stopping them from getting banned.

this group is evil, misguided or both, and all they have achieved is to ensure that zionists have remained in power uncahllenged while muslims have gone into a self imposed exile.

I wonder if Mr Usman Nawaz provided an alternative viewpoint to his own, or was he also unchallenged.

Whilst I disagree with HT, this is an immature reaction. There must be more to this...

There were two waves. One female and one male wave moving in the ocean.

The male wave started to panic and shouted, "I can see the shore, we're doomed. I am but one wave, it is over for me."

The female wave replied to the ignorant and yet young naive wave, "you don't understand. You're not just a wave but the Ocean."

To you Mohsin you may think one person who may not be FAMOUS means jack but for me, such people are the real heroes because they stood strong to the principles they follow.

I commend the man who stands up for what he believes is right. And so should you. A wall is built by one brick. An ocean from one drop. A nation from two human beings, a miracle answer by one human praying and action.

See the big picture. He doesn't give a damn about what you think but what God thinks. And to God, He doesn't care if a man is famous, known or has a million followers.

So would this 'Youth MP' debate with a member of the hizb or would he follow the protocol his senior's are bound by and not share a platform?

He has political aspirations-However this young man wil lbe a disaster. He is a member of the discredited sufi council of Britain and is part of the chestis clan who tell the government young people are being radicalised so they can obtain funding to fight extremism.

He also was a stern supporter of Lorna Fitzsimmons -the ex MP of Rochdale who voted for the war...

Says it all really! I think even MPAC would be against govt sufi like this who are pro war.

Salaam All,
After reading this passage and reading different views on what people think, i think Usman Nawaz did what he did for a good reason and i think most people who suppport HT in their comments are being slightly ignorant and forgive me if i am wrong or if i have offended anyone, but most comments sounded like they had no basis. i like 'thehook''s comment and also i do not think Usman Nawaz did it for attention as he has been with the station for 9 years!

But Allah Knows Best.

Which public figure do you most admire and why?

Though I disagree with some of his views, I quite admire Ex-Prime Minister Tony Blair.

Allaah guide him and forgive him and us all

This man is a member of muslim sufi council. They get grants from the government. He supported Lorna -former Rochdale friends of Israil. She made him a youth MP. He will do anything and say anything for publicity and money. Watch for an MPAC article on him soon.
