Tarique Ghaffur Vs The Metropolitan Police Print E-mail
Friday, 22 August 2008

mpac_breaking_news.jpg The country's most senior Asian police officer has lodged a £1.2m claim of racial discrimination against his own force, BBC News understands.

Assistant Commissioner Tarique Ghaffur lodged the claim against the Metropolitan Police with an employment tribunal on Friday.

He claims he was discriminated against on grounds of race, religion and age.

The Metropolitan Police (Met) said they could not comment until they received details of the claim.

Mr Ghaffur is head of security planning for London's 2012 Olympics.

His claim is understood to be for £1.2m in loss of earnings and damages.

'Saddened'

In June he made a number of allegations against the Met, which included claims he was silenced over his concerns about detaining terrorist suspects for up to 42 days.

Mr Ghaffur also said he had been sidelined by Met Commissioner Sir Ian Blair in key decisions.

Sir Ian is believed to be named as one of the two respondents in Mr Ghaffur's claim.

A spokesman for the National Black Police Association confirmed that the papers were lodged at 1600 BST on Friday.

He said: "We are saddened that the case is going to an employment tribunal. We wanted it to be settled by mediation."

Further details about the claim are expected to be released next week.

Mr Ghaffur has spoken out against the police before.

In 2006 he said that Muslims were being discriminated against as the result of anti-terror legislation.

A decision by the tribunal panel is expected within the next month.

I'm glad he has taken a stance against the MET Police force - they wanted it settled by mediation. What that means is we can be racist and discriminate you as much as we want and when you complain - we'll say sorry and you should accept it. Its just a real shame that MPACUK don't follow what is currently happening in the West Midlands Police - Mr Ghaffur is complaining about being sidetracked but there is a Muslim police officer who has tried to register a complaint about serious discrimination and thats not all - imagine if a an Asian tried to run over a white person - how would you react - now add to this both individuals are Police officers and its the white person who has tried to run over the asian.... that is just on the surface....

This tribunal outcome or any outcomes will not change a thing. It happens around the world, it's inherent within the society.

It was the case of Stephen Lawrence which said the police was institutionally racist nothing much has changed has it.

If this persecution can happen to one of the most senior police officers in the UK - then what chance has the typical Muslim on the street got?

Having worked in the Metropolitan Police for a number of years, racism and islamaphobia is a part of working life for many Muslims and minorities. I could write a book about my racist experiences and incidents I've witness or been told of. If non practicing senior officers are experiencing racism and islamaphobia, imagine what its like for young practicing brothers and sisters. The sad fact is that things will only improve when more minorities join the police and challenge racist attitudes and behaviors.

As indicated above Institutional racism can't be erradicated, in other words racism is part of society it doesn't matter how many people you get in the force you will still be discriminated.

Have harsher laws on child abuse prevented people from committing the offence? no

shocking news reporting on 10pm bbc news, instead of either just reporting the issues tarique g. had raised or the case for/against being aired impartially they did an hatchet job on him, by reporting almost exclusively the government and police dirt.

so instead of considering his claims they told is he had no reason to be upset with his £100 000 wage half a million pension and his obe.

now im asking what has that do with racism, its not as if it is one or the other, it can be both racism and still a matter of personal achievement.

the fat is this government needs blair because he is their lapdog who will play politics.
