Are Muslim women normal? Media Success! Print E-mail
Wednesday, 20 August 2008

success.jpgMuslim woman – oppression, honour killing, genital mutilation, forced marriage… that’s too often the dominant portrayal of Muslim women in the media.

It's a small thing but I noticed the Guardian used a photo of a hijabi school girl to illustrate a section on Education - it makes a change to see Muslims represented in a normal context, where they just happen to be Muslim, rather than where being Muslim is the issue. I dropped the Guardian a short email to letters and reader's editor, and the next day it was published in the Guardian Letters page.

How refreshing to see an image of a hijab-wearing Muslim girl chosen for the normal, everyday, context of education (Report, July 31), rather than exclusively reserved for the "problems" with which we are more usually associated in the wider media. Maybe one day there'll be more media images of Muslims in soap operas and adverts than flag-burning protests and police mugshots.

There's still nothing normal about girls wearing hijabi in this country. Forever may that remain so.

You're right oh troubled one!! They should be wearing next to nothing, getting drunk, and catching chlamydia through promiscuity. That's about the current UK standard, right?...hhhmmm.

Troubled - it depends on which part of the country you're in.

So abuyusuf is saying that if you don't have hijab you have all the rest. The vast majority of non-hijab wearers do not exhibit those traits, in fact quite a proportion of them behave better than hijab wearers.
Please get out of your black-and-white world!

Akbar ,my simple friend, you missed my point. I was trying to establish what The Troubled Man deems normal.

Assalaam alaikum and Greetings

Here's another media-success for Muslim Women.

It appears that a (Bahraini) Muslim Athlete, all dressed in hijab, has won the women's Olympic 200m sprint.

Congratulations.

A bit more like this please, in the press, to remove the typical "Muslim women are suppressed" articles.
