The nine-member human rights committee composed of legal experts, said it was concerned "negative public attitudes towards Muslim members of society" continued to be allowed in Britain. It recommended the Government "should take energetic measures to eliminated this phenomenon and ensure that authors of such acts of discrimination on the basis of religion are adequately deterred and sanctioned." The committee also expressed concern over the Government's plan to extend detention of terrorist suspects without trial from 28 to 42 days. Those suspected of terrorism should be promptly charged and taken to court within a reasonable period of time, while their lawyers should have access to the evidence against them. The committee contains members from Britain, Ireland, Australia, Benin, Colombia, Ecuador, Egypt, Mauritius and Sweden - all are expected to be independent from their governments. Their comments come in response to reports from the UK and Ireland on how to carry out their obligations under the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights. Ireland was called upon by the committee to open up its largely Roman Catholic primary school system to secular education, while also asking the Irish parliament to "take measures to help women avoid unwanted pregnancies so that they do not have to resort to illegal or unsafe abortions." Yunus Yakoub Islam:
In the Daily Star coverage of this issue, the story includes this line:
But a source said: “Funnily enough, they didn’t seem to mention the treatment of non-Muslims in Saudi Arabia and Iran.” I wonder if the source in question might have been a Daily Star journalist! A few bloggers have bounced this stupid idea into touch. Perhaps MPACUK would like to research it and give a prominent rebuttal to this specious tabloid retort.

Colin:
I’d like to see the facts behind this UN report published. I understand that these committees rely on sizing up the laws of the country in question for any shortcomings and interviewing a handful of people about them, though how these people are selected for interview I don’t know. There’s no mention here of any specific legal shortcomings on the books but the existence of “negative public views towards the Muslim community” which the Government should “challenge” and take “energetic measures to eliminate”.
It would be more than interesting to hear about some of the new ‘measures’ the committee have in mind and about which UN members have already put such measures into law. Rather weirdly, the committee makes no mention of the part the the Muslim community in the UK could play towards changing the public views from negative to positive. It appears to me that like the EU called so-called human rights quangos, this UN committee seems more interested in promoting new rights of clerics to preach their twaddle uninterrupted than to protect Joe Soap’s existing right to dissent, yes and if he wishes, to tell the cleric to take running jump. He has this right because his ancestors won it for him.

To Brits, Resist Biblical Christanity, accept the UN, accept Islam, because it was Islam which gave the world a system of human rights, ethics, and civilisation. Those who have doubt, do your research, google "islamic history" and you will know what you never knew before. Brits, embrace Islam and spread islam

Clifford Ishi, I am intrigued by your view of biblical christianity. Now tell me which version of the bible you read as there are so many versions.

It’s time for Muslim barristers to investigate the possibility of taking the Labour Government to Court over its treatment of Muslims in this non-stop insidious campaign of political bullying, hatred designed to keep New Labour in power by diverting attention from its gross incompetence in its management of this Country.
I believe that what Labour is doing is not in Britain’s interest, nor in the interests of our liberal democratic society, and that we would thus be carrying out our patriotic duty to Britain and its core values by taking this disastrous, unprincipled Labour government to Court.

Colin the Athiest:
1. I do not know of any discrimination by this government against Muslims.
2. ALL religions should be taken out of government, disestablish the church. 3. ALL schools should be non-religious. Make religion personal and keep it out of the public domain. Everyone should be happy then.

Michael:
The United Nations is correct, there have been numerous negative reports in British newspapers about Muslims, most of which after just a little research prove to be groundless.
What is becoming increasingly apparent is that there are individual and certain groups working hard to promote discord between Christianity and Islam. As for the Star adding comments about Saudi, which perhaps proves my point, perhaps they should be reminded that this is a report about the U.K. , I'm sure the UN issues similar reports about Saudi, in any case what ever happens in Saudi cannot be used as a hammer to beat U.K. Muslims.

Troubled man:
Colin is on the right track, I'd like to add...
4. A complete moratorium on the construction of new religious buildings more on topic - since when did anyone take any notice of the UN? And certainly we won't take any notice of what that shower the British Government says - gods curse em all. Still on the bright side - we'll be rid of of dhimmi UK before too long. England begins to wake up.

This is the same UN that stands by and watches genocide..That is totally corrupt..If muslims were being persecuted en masse i would agree but muslims have the same rights as anyone else in this country..There are also muslims who are not interested in assimilation with the majority..I also wonder why it is only islam that gets picked on and not hindus or sikhs..The UN should get its own house in order and start on countries that do persecute minorities..

Britain has been told by the United Nations to challenge negative public views towards the Muslim community.
