Miliband on visit to Middle East Print E-mail
Sunday, 18 November 2007

David Miliband The meeting in the West Bank city of Ramallah comes ahead of a US conference which will bring the Palestinians and Israelis together for peace talks.

Mr Miliband is also due to meet Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert on his trip.

BBC Middle East correspondent Jeremy Bowen said Britain wanted to show it was prepared to do what it could to help start a new peace process.

Britain plans to donate about £250m to backing up the peace process if it can be established.

Intense negotiations

Jeremy Bowen said Mr Miliband would try to discover the key issues for both sides before the conference later this month.

These talks, to be held in Annapolis, near Washington DC, would bring the Palestinians and the Israelis together in a way that had not happened since 2000, our correspondent said.

It is understood leaders will look at the future for Jerusalem and Jewish settlements in the occupied territories, and the future of Palestinian refugees, many of whom lost their homes when Israel was created almost 60 years ago.

They will also aim to create a Palestinian state.

Currently there was "quite a distance" between the Palestinians and Israel so intense negotiations were expected, our correspondent added.

I am genuinely confident that David Miliband, Foreign Secretary, will renew his positive efforts to promote peace and reduce ongoing tensions in the Middle East. I endorse the position of William Hague, Member of Parliament for the Conservative Party, that "new Prime Minister Gordon Brown and his Foreign Secretary David Miliband should approach the Middle East, and promote improved relationships with nations, while seeking to prevent a nuclear arms race in the region, and stepping up the level of dialogue and understanding."

Furthermore, It is important that we find a resolution to the crisis in the Middle East and work towards a closing solution.

Thanks

I hope he asks Abbas if he is willing to recognise Israel as a "Jewish State" since Israel has already said it will work towards and recognise a Palestinian State.

If Abbas can't say "Yes" then there's noi peace if you refuse to recognise your neighbour.

will he be asking for iaea inspections of israels nuclear facilities and military?

will he be asking israel to disarm its nuclear warheads?

since the iaea has recently cleared iran of any attempt to make a nuke warhead will brown and milliband now focus on those that do have the warheads on their soil?

somehow i doubt it.

1000 dead palestinian children curtesy of the idf and not one single conviction .. do you think the friends of israel will be asking why not?

do you think there'll be any questions of human rights and the collective punishment of gazans through israeli sanctions?

the uk, usa and europe are not honest brokers and abbas is yet another 'sob' that we can do business with for our benefit and nothing more.

Perhaps you can direct your concerns to your Member of Parliament (MP) or the Minister in Britain's Foreign Office. If you feel so strongly about these issues, stop only spouting your opinions on website, do something constructive. Write to your MP or a Minister about your concerns.

Thanks

Israhel, we deal with these silly points all the time at BBC 5Live.

Why would any member of the IDF be charged because of Palestinian children being killed, unless you can show that it was murder.

Wendy, do YOU accept Israel as a "Jewish State", like most of the World (except Arab/Muslim countries) do? (I know you don't!)

Isn't it fundamentally reasonable to ask "Well if you want peace then do you recognise the State you are trying to do a deal with".

Is there something wrong about having a "Jewish State". There are so many Muslim states.

If that is addressed to me then I respectfully suggest the same sentiments to many people posting here. What you are saying is "Why waste your time on a website where nothing will get done?".

I sort of agree. Nothing will get done by the rantiungs here. But its lively!

I think Wendy's concerns are quite widespread.

Israel can only be taken seriously when they declare their nuclear cpabilities, disarm peacefully and than adhere to thousands of UN resolutions that they occupy land ilegally.

Than the world will listen to Israel and if Israel refuse all this than i don't see why any one should symphasise with them. After all why should Israel be above International law? because America protects them?

SO, you would start with not allowing Iran to progress a nuclear programme to acquire nuclear weapons?

Name one UN resolution against Israel that is legally binding upon Israel to comply with.

It seems to me that Israel survives without any sympathy anyway.

Have people gone absolutley mad, palestinians have never said no to Israeli state, this is an external notion.

Abbas is from the same party or branch as Yasser Arafat a aprty which recognises Israel so its wrong to even ask them the question.

The question Miliband needs to ask is whether israeli forces will get rid of those illegal settlements and comply by the old mandate that palestinians want

In that case, saying "Yes" to the statement "Do you recognise the existence and perpetuality of a Jewish state called Israel" will present no problem.

If they recognise Israel then how come Hamas charter states that its aim is to destroy Israel?

Hamas will ALSO have to renounce their charter. I can see a condition of peace being the dismantling of Hamas by Fatah. That's be fun!

Yossi am not talking about Hamas, if you read carefully an reffering to Fatah who have never denounced 'Ertetz Israel' am talking about external influences like the media who continuosly give this notion that Fatah is against Israel, they are not. It's really quite simple when Israel 'finally' stop thier stupid assumptions and hysteria there will be a way forward.
