(Dispatches 'Britain Under Attack', 6/8/07, 8pm.)

Here are some points you could make in your own words:
1) Thank the programme-makers for highlighting the central role of foreign policy in causing radicalisation, and the government's refusal to acknowledge this fact.
2) Complain that the trailers and promotion of this programme were sensationalised and inflammatory, portraying Muslims as a threat.

Some further points:
- A broad range of Muslims were interviewed and views such as those of Moazzam Begg made an important contribution.
- The programme mentioned the problem of draconian new anti-terror laws that have been introduced.
- Although Channel 4 billed the programme as being about British Muslims, Abu Mohammed and Omar Bakri who were in the programme representing the extremists are not based in the UK. It is vital to remember how unrepresentative their opinions are and not to provide them a platform to preach their hatred.
- The Islamic prohibitions against harming civilians should have been mentioned.
- The programme should also have shown the efforts of British Muslim organisations such as MPACUK to channel anger at foreign policy into effective action to create change peacefully through the political process.
- The programme addressed Muslim concerns that the government in their work to de-radicalise young British Muslims, are attempting to delete chunks from our religion, such as Ummah and Jihad. Muslims are outraged by this and want the government to understand and accept Islam for the peaceful religion that it is.
- In the scene where the RUSI conference was shown, policy-makers described the views of extremists as a “cancer” when it is in fact an ideology just like the BNP. It could be solved if the government accepts the role of the foreign policy in fuelling extremism and takes the necessary steps to address the issue.

With more and more documentaries about Islam and Muslims it is more important than ever that we make our voices heard - it will only takes 5 minutes to contact Channel 4 with your comments. All comments from the public are logged and circulated to the programme-makers, to inform future programmes.

Review:

Phil Rees produced an interesting documentary on this sensitive topic. He has covered it from many angles, speaking to people from all sides of the arguments. Among the many points that were critically examined were the idea that Islam and the West are incompatible and that Muslims see the 'War on Terror' as 'War on Islam'. There was also a discussion of the theological argument used by extremists to justify attacking Britain and whether the presence of British troops in Muslim lands has broken the covenant between Britain and its Muslim citizens.

The programme also talked about the Muslim allegiance to the Ummah and whether this was more important than nationhood. It looked at government-supported programmes to de-radicalise young British Muslims (details of which were extremely secretive) and efforts to promote a depoliticised Sufism as the acceptable face of Islam in the U.K.

Sufi Muslim Council sings the government tune again...

The programme highlighted the way the government is keen to promote Muslim groups that are prepared to ignore foreign policy and the suffering of the Ummah - groups such as the Sufi Muslim Council. Haras Rafiq, a member of the Sufi Muslim Council filmed by Channel 4's Dispatches said Muslims have more important concerns than Iraq and Palestine, such as GCSEs and overdrafts. He also repeated his scaremongering about British Muslims:
"A percentage of people actually agree and support proactively the people that are deciding to blow themselves up. It varies; it can be 7 per cent, 5 per cent, 9 per cent."

From where does he get his figures!? Just think of a number, any number....

Thanks to Ali Abdullah for raising this on the MPACUK Forum

I agree with the point that where does brother Rafiq get his figures from but i also must admit that even i have encountered brothers who sympathise a little bit with some of the bombings that have occured.

I am truly shocked the way that even a simple thread can be turned into one of hate and anger, I didnt believe it before, that this was a concerted campaign to destroy Mpac but I do now.

It's not very subtle and just infuriates me to know that whatever you guys write some zionist jew, will divert the disucssion to one of outright ridiculous hate.

I will complain and send you a donation.

Its seems channel 4 have started lets bash the muslims season,as muslims seems to have the least voice in the media to defend against accusations.

it seems just like other media networks channel 4 have decided haris rafia represents muslims in the U.K,As sky thinks it anjum chowdhary or abu izzadeen.

I never knew these people were elected by muslims in the u.k do tell me if i am wrong anyone, the concept of jihad being shown is the same concept that bush is using for his crusade.

anyone who thinks using violence in britain will make a diffrence to the british governments actions is living in cuckoo land,if the governments of britain gave two hoots about the people they would never send them kill and be killed using lies and deceit.

last year 498 acts of terror occured according to europol only one was linked to muslims, yet if you go by the media hysteria and frenzy you would think all 498 acts of terror were carried out by muslims.

sections of the media and the government of the day are using muslims as boogeyman to pass laws to curtail our rights.

Pir:

The point to remember is that no one except possibly his own mother would take any notice of the likes of Haris Rafiq UNLESS they betrayed their own.

This Freudian Pir orders a large dosage of Taweez that would suppress his desire to seek attention at any cost to his own dignity.

I was disgusted by Channel 4's 'documentary'. There was no facts or evidence offered - just the supposition of that moron Haras Rafiq.

All he did was draw a triangle and a bell-shaped curve and the reporter was all over him like a rash.

I will Inshallah make my protest heard - thanks for the info MPAC.

I also suggest that everyone check out the post on this on ummahpulse.co.uk - it gives a few very relevant points that we should also incorporate in the letters of complaint.

after watching the whole programme i can say that this time channel 4 and phil rees did a better job in explaining the root causes of what has caused some people to become radicalised.

two people on the programme showed themselves in a bad light, one was the clown called haras rafiq,he showed using the networking pyramid scheme, that as many as 20 per cent of the 3 milion muslims are potential suicide bombers,if this is what is called expert advice no wonder britain is going down hill as a whole.

the other was the guy covering his face for all we know he might have been another abu qatada working for the secret services and creating probelms where they do not exist, all the programmes i have seen show that people have been radicalised by preachers who have come from abroad as asylum seekers,it is rather odd that people who have very dodgy backgrounds have been given asylum by the british government to create tensions and fear in the communities where people have lived peacefully for 60 or 70 years.

it seems the government is surrounded by advisors with their heads in the sand, who find excuses that the government wants to hear not what the reality is.

but overall i would give chanel four 6 out of 10 for at least trying to find out the truth.

MA:

Mr Rafiq's unfounded exaggeration of the number of supporters of extremists/suicide bombers is highly deplorable. And so is the outrageous uttering of one of the so called extremists who was so brave that he did not even reveal his face It is these elements we MUST condemn in strongest possible language. He was confirming each and every allegation against Islam made by the interviewer and he supported each allegation by quoting Qur'anic verses out of context. I fail to understand how can a Muslim behave so irresponsibly as he did in the program. I may sound to be on extreme but to be honest I doubt if he is a Muslim. And if anyone doubts what I am saying please see the program again, specially this man.
