ALERT: Media - Don't Forget the Palestinians Print E-mail
Saturday, 26 May 2007

Jactionalert.jpgune 2007 marks the 40-year anniversary of the Six Day War, in which the Israeli army took military control of the Gaza Strip and West Bank, including East Jerusalem.

MPACUK is a member of the Enough! Coalition - a coalition of charities, trade unions, faith and other campaign groups and together we unite and say loud and clear: Enough! To 40 years of Israeli Occupation of the Palestinian Territories, including Jerusalem.

The government of Israel has built ‘settlements’ in the Occupied Palestinian Territories and assisted its citizens in setting up homes and businesses using land and resources stolen from the Palestinian people. This situation has continued to the current day despite Israel being in violation of international humanitarian law and over 60 UN resolutions.

MPACUK will host articles over the coming weeks to expose the terror, injustice and oppression inflicted upon the Palestinian people by apartheid Israel. We urge all readers to participate with us and be active in standing up for human rights and holding the bloody state of Israel to account for their crimes against humanity.

MPACUK ask you write/call the letters page of the mainstream media outlets about the 40th anniversary reiterating that the brutal illegal occupation has gone on for too long and it is time the UK government stood up for international law and human rights and say enough! Politely ask them to ensure the key issues are highlighted in the anniversary of 40 years of occupation of East Jerusalem, West Bank and Gaza to make viewers/readers aware of the true facts of the occupation:

(Remember to put the below points in your own words to ensure effective impact)

  • * Throughout its years of occupation, Israel continues to stand in violation of dozens of international laws and scores of UN resolutions. And the international community bears much of the responsibility for those violations

* The Occupation has created serious poverty for the Palestinians, as well as severe human rights violations. But Palestinian suffering dates back further to 1948, when the state of Israel was created and 750,000 Palestinians were driven or fled from their homes. The United Nations asserted the refugees' right to return home in 1948, but Israel has refused to allow this. Meanwhile the refugee population has grown to over four million, one of the largest in the world, many of whom live in camps waiting for international law to be upheld.

* For 40 years Israel has constructed illegal settlements on stolen Palestinian land. For 40 years Israel has killed thousands of Palestinians, demolished 12,000 Palestinian homes, arrested 650,000 Palestinians, destroyed more than a million Palestinian olive trees.

* Britain bears a particular responsibility for this suffering. From 1917 to 1948 Britain controlled Palestine. Along with the US and many EU countries, the UK government is today involved in a close military, economic and political relationship with Israel, and fails to stand up for the rights of the Palestinian people.

* Since 2002 the Apartheid Wall built on occupied Palestinian territory aims to encircle the Palestinian population, squeezing Palestinians into truncated Bantustans and cementing Israeli expansionism. The Wall divides farmers from their land, students from their schools, workers from their jobs, and people from their communities. Despite the International Court of Justice ruling it illegal, the Wall now encircles Palestinian towns and cities in the most massive land-grab in 40 years.

* For 40 years of occupation Israel has continued to deny Palestinians in the occupied territories their internationally guaranteed human rights to food, water, education, livelihood, and health care; imposes a system of checkpoints, closures, military fences, sieges and curfews that deny Palestinians freedom of movement within and between their own communities; and, again in violation of the Geneva Conventions, Israel imposes collective punishments on the entire Palestinian population.
