Exactly Who Is Creating Radicals: Muslim's or The Government? Print E-mail

346207_houses_of_parliament.jpgLAHORE: The British Prison Service’s attempts to curb the growth of radical Islam in jails by restricting communal prayers and reading of the holy Quran during work breaks are exacerbating the problem, according to the first in-depth study of Muslim prisoners cited by The Guardian newspaper.

The research, based on interviews with 170 current and former Muslim prisoners, also reveals that bans on access to certain TV programmes and newspapers in high-security prisons have also backfired. The four-year research project by Aberdeen University anthropologist Gabriele Marranci also finds that a small minority of former young Muslim offenders are vulnerable to recruitment by militant organisations as a result of their prison experiences. He says that individual members of Islamist militant organisations have tried to “talent scout” young Muslim ex-prisoners without disclosing their affiliations.

He also voices “extreme concern” that some had told him they had converted their group and formed an Islamist gang, although most Muslim former prisoners were uninterested or did not want to become involved. But the research challenges media claims that Muslim inmates have been radicalised by imams.

“I found no evidence to suggest that the Muslim chaplains are behaving or preaching in a way that facilitates radicalisation,” said Dr Marranci. “On the contrary, my findings suggest that they are extremely important in preventing dangerous forms of extremism. However, the distrust that they face, both internally and externally, is jeopardising their important function.”

The research shows that Muslim prisoners were subject to stricter surveillance than other inmates, especially when they adopted religious symbols such as beards, veils and caps: “Growing a beard is, in almost all establishments I visited, interpreted as ‘radicalisation’ of the individual,” said Dr Marranci, a lecturer in the anthropology of religion.

The study, which interviewed prisoners in England, Scotland and Wales, also claims that security policies in prisons, including restricting prayers in a communal space or reading the holy Quran during work breaks, are exacerbating rather than suppressing radicalisation.

He warns that the continuing atmosphere of suspicion surrounding Muslim prisoners increases a sense of frustration and depression which a strong view of Islam can help to overcome. “The respective prison services have tried to do something to address the issue of radicalisation but they’re heading in the wrong direction. This is largely because the measures they have put in place have been fuelled by attempts to exempt themselves from negative media coverage and criticism.” He said that far from tackling the spread of radical Islam, Prison Service efforts were facilitating “essentialist views of Islam”, which was not to be confused with extremism.

Kathy:

It is very obvious that if anyone is radicalising Muslims, it is the Government of this country and its treatment of the Muslim population in general. They target Muslims on an almost daily basis, singling them out as potential criminals or suicide bombers etc. In the last year we have had Jack Straw, John Reid, Phil Woolas and Ruth Kelly all highlighting Muslims as if suddenly they were a different species. That, together with Blair's constant references to Muslim extremists and terrorists would be enough to radicalise anyone.

Muslims have been living quietly and peacefully in this country for well over 40 years but suddenly they are highlighted as 'bad'. Irish people were treated in a similar way during the 1970's when the IRA were planting bombs in our major cities. The difference now is that Blair needs a smoke screen for his disastrous Foreign Policy, so he chooses to single out the Muslim community. He needs the press to highlight arrests of Muslims rather than the return of our young servicemen and women in their coffins, from Iraq and Afghanistan.

If Muslims are indeed being radicalised, then I cannot blame them. If someone was constantly criticising my community then I would stand up and answer back. We are only human and it is a human reaction to protect your family. However, all I see is Muslims choosing to show their Faith, to be proud of their Faith and there is no wrong in that. Obviously Blair sees men growing beards, women wearing hijabs and Muslims Praying five time a day as radicalisation. There are bad elements in every community but it is wrong to link everyone with the same attitudes just because a few commit criminal acts. Acts which are indeed un-Islamic.

Blair is using the Muslims as scapegoats because he knows that the vast majority of them will not fight back. Believe me, there are many non Muslims in this country who want to see an end to New Labour's Foreign Policy and 'special relationship' with Bush. If that makes one a radical then I must admit to being radical number 1.

So just how many of the 'alleged' 9/11 hijackers had beards and caps?

In fact how many of the 7/7 perpetrators had beards and or caps?

This demonisation has other purposes as Kathy rightly alludes.

Now why would the Govt, and some of its vested interests want to ensure that the great British public can easily identify Muslims over any other similar looking 'brown' pigmented person?

Now you dont have to make Muslims wear little yellow crescents , do you?

“Now you dint have to make Muslims wear little yellow crescents , do you?”

No, they will make Muslims wear GREEN crescent.

@Kathy
I belong to an Irish American group. The demonisation, vile brutal barbaric treatment dished out to Muslims/Palestinians is discussed with the way the Irish were treated and demonised by the brits, the similarities compared & analysed.

It is amazing to see the atrocious barbarity, black ops, counter insurgency acts being carried out:
THEY ARE THE SAME.

Unfortunately the US Irish have forgotten their history and are “pandering to Jewish/Zionist interests by American politicians with some Irish DNA in their make-up is fairly straightforwardly motivated by their perception that their political careers are in peril if they don't show proper fealty to these interests.”

“But the research challenges media claims that Muslim inmates have been radicalised by imams.”

Personally I would like the proof. I have contacted Imams working with Muslim former + present prisoners. They help the prisoners to study/finish their studies and get them interested in programs and try to get them in touch with Muslim families who can help them, give them support and solidarity. I do know the work they do as I volunteered to help.

And yes Kathy, l am with you, on your side. When I see Muslims or non Muslims (Haiti) bombed, attacked, brutalised, raped, robbed and falsely accused for false flag terrorism carried out by foreign scumbag thug governments than I get ferociously angry. To top it all they have the audacity to stop the Muslims from carrying out their religious duties and call them extremists.

It is blair’s butchering neo cancerous policy that is creating opposition and who would accept a cancerous policy.

Judge Dredd:

What exactly is a Radical Muslim. Is that like the "Radical Black" who was after equal rights and abolition of slavery in the European Inhabited nations?

However, I do believe that it is in the interests of our Zionist British and European Israel loving institutions (In which we have so much confidence at least in their consistency) that muslims are polarized and begin to loathe and hate the aggressors.

That is when the Muslims will make mistakes.

I believe that we must fight the actual hatred, anger and polarization.

We should instead focus our engergies in the way of our Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).
