Action Alert! Defend Interpal Print E-mail

What is it about Interpal that makes them the constant target of the Israeli Lobby? Now we learn that NatWest has withdrawn banking facilities from Interpal... This is a very slippery slope for us all.

Today they try to close down the biggest and best Palestinian charity, tomorrow it will be smaller charities and finally the Israelis will have starved the Palestinians from their land.

Back in 2003 MPACUK successfully defended Interpal after the Jewish Board Of Deputies and pro Israel elements within the US authorities asked the British authorities to freeze the accounts of Interpal two years ago and they obliged.

Mike Whine, Board of Deputies Director of Defence and a CST spokesman, told a pro Israeli Website at the time, “The board has written to the foreign secretary several times urging the banning of Hamas and related entities such as Interpal.”

Interpal’s assets were frozen soon after. It took a full investigation by the Charities Commission to declare Interpal innocent of the malicious charges. And another 2 years, and a libel case for Interpal to win a public apology from the Board of Deputies.

In fact I can’t think of any charity that has had more charity commission investigations than Interpal and every time they have emerged completely clean. All of this in a climate where if Muslims are arrested they are usually found guilty of something. Interpal must be exemplary in its operations to come out without criticism time after time.

Now we learn that NatWest has withdrawn banking facilities from Interpal. We spoke to one of the trustees of Interpal and he believed that this decision was linked to a US court ruling that the families of Israeli victims of suicide bombings could sue the bankers of those alleged to have links with Hamas. Talk about long shots!

We spoke to NatWest and they will not comment. They won’t even say if they have withdrawn banking facilities from Interpal.

The course of action here is simple. We need to contact NatWest and Royal Bank of Scotland and complain about this decision. We also need to vote with our feet in numbers. Close accounts with NatWest and Royal Bank of Scotland in solidarity with our brothers and sisters in Interpal and ultimately in Palestine. I know it is a hassle but for us at MPACUK, we believe that our collective inaction is the reason for the suffering of our brothers and sisters in Palestine.

Please be polite but firm. Remember NatWest could stand up to this if they had chose to.

INTERPAL claims to be a non-political, non-profit making British charity that focuses solely on the provision of relief and development aid to the poor and needy of Palestine the world over, primarily in Palestine and the refugee camps in Jordan and Lebanon.

How about they alter their position and help the destitute in Palestine and Israel. Two of the poorest sectors of Israeli society are Arab and Haredi Jewish communities. Why not help to alleviate poverty in both countries?

Let us make poverty history in Palestine and Israel.

Interpal should work with other charities to better the poor people everywhere!

I am concerned that MPAC UK is silencing voices it does not agree with and even refused to print my last message in the Jack Straw column.

Joy1, have you even been to Palestine. The Israeli Arabs face an uphill struggle to eradicate discrimination in the "only democracy" in the middle east.

Why don't you say that to the URJ or Israel Relief Fund.

It's funny that Zionists like yourself try to take the moral high ground.

Why not make Israel's use of human sheilds history?

Or make the thousands of children locked up in Israeli dungeons History?

You don't want that do you?

On the issue of Interpal, it's really shocking that Zionists can fall this low. They are now starting to attack Charities, I thought it was only academics or people like MPACUK they attack, but come on Charities?

Zionists are the new Nazis.

Hi,

I'll refer to you as 'Joy1' as you decided to adopt my own username. To correct your assumption, I am a British Muslim and not a 'Zionist' as you appear to publicly portray me on this message board. Much of your analysis is irrational and racist.

You stated: “have you even been to Palestine. The Israeli Arabs face an uphill struggle to eradicate discrimination in the "only democracy" in the Middle East.”

This is preposterous. I have never addressed any issue in my previous response about discrimination experienced by Israeli Arabs and fully agree with the viewpoint that racism and discrimination occur in Britain, America, Israel in every Arab and African nation too. May I suggest next time you actually read my message before responding. I am meant to be your fellow Muslim brother and you accuse me of being a ‘Zionist’. Thank you. You are an excellent Muslim following the basic teachings of the Holy Quran. You refuse to follow - And speak good to people [al-Baqarah 2:83].

You then said:
"Why don't you say that to the URJ or Israel Relief Fund."

I call upon all charities signed up with the Charity Commission, whether Muslim, Jewish, Hindu, Buddhist or Atheist to expand their work to saving the lives of all humanity. It is forbidden within all religions not to help others, whether they are of your own faith or not. To be frank with you, I would argue that it is Haraam to only care about our own ‘group of people’ and neglect poor people globally (why only look at fellow Muslims?). This is a problem with all charities. If you are Christian- then you need to help Christians, if you are Muslim- then you have to help Muslims etc etc. Those of faith think they will go to heaven if they do good for their own.

It is all absurd to me. Islam was not sent down for Israel or Palestine, it was sent down for the whole of humanity, ranging from the poor man in Africa, to the rich man in America to the man that offers his time in working for the benefit of his local community. The same applies to places of worship that aim to support their own courses. What happen to being egalitarian in our charitable efforts? However, we should and not out of our political passion but our true commitment to continue to address the problems experienced by Palestinians and use our charitable funds to help them restructure their society and communities.

To correct you, I am a British Muslim and completely disagree with Government policies of Israel, America, Britain and every other country which oppressive its people. I disagree with Hamas and its aim to harm innocent people, ordinary Israelis and Jews cannot be played for the action of their Governments. They are ordinary people, just like the British people cannot dictate over our Government’s illegal actions.

You said:
"Why not make Israel's use of human sheilds history?"

Because the issue here is not Israel. Though the use of human shields is a breach of a Palestinian’s basic human rights’ and those participating in such acts should be brought to justice. However, I am not a judge or politician to have the power to do that.

You said:
"You don't want that do you?"

Brother, you are wrong. I think Muslim, Christian, Jewish and other charities should be closed down if they are not inclusively serving all of humanity. Therefore, yes I want Interpal and every charity closed down from this point of view.

You then said:

"Zionists are the new Nazis."

The tone of your message could be seen as anti-Semitic rather than wanting to engage in a healthy debate, even with fellow co-religionist like myself. For the first time, I am calling a fellow Muslim a ‘Nazi’ because your views are similar to that of Nazi fascist parties. You are the mirror image of the British National Party.

Thanks

Joy1

Er:

er...how are Zionists the new Nazis? Why do people like you constantly call Israelis "Zionists?" What's the stigma attached to it? I'd consider it a compliment.

As for Israeli "human shields," I'm sure that Palestinian "militants" have never done anything at all on that basis, or hidden in civilian homes, or sent children out as suicide bombers, or anything vaguely in that sense...

Instead of writing to Natwest customer relations or your local branch send all letters directly to the Chief Executive of Royal Bank of Scotland Group at

Sir Fred Goodwin
Royal Bank of Scotland Group plc
36 St Andrew Square
Edinburgh
EH2 2YB

Working for one of the big five banks I can tell you that Chief Execs take an active interest in dealing with customer complaints, it may be hard to believe but its true. This method will make maximum impact. I'd recommend writing a letter instead of making a phonecall as they are obliged to reply to a letter and you can keep a record of their response.

I agree with what is said but I think there is a small point missing here which is the good old cliche of "charity begins at home." If you are poor and only have enough to feed your own children it is mandatory that you feed your own child first even if your neighbours child is also hungry. And so it goes further, we tend to first help immediate familty first in time of need before total stranges. Its our natural tendacy to do it hence also the reason we tend to help a muslims first as we feel closer to them. You are right we should help everybody globally but there is only so much resources around and hence charities focus on the people closer to them. It goes for any situation for eg. Most charities in South Africa irrespective of religion will first look after the poor in South Africa than go help someone else globally. Are we going to criticise the South African charities for this? I would think not.
