Umar Ibn Al Khattab Vs Tony Blair Print E-mail
Friday, 15 December 2006

584413_moonI remember as a young child in madrassah being taught the amazing story of Umar Ibn Al Khattab (RA), his conversion to Islam and his love and care for the people he represented, and his inability to stand by when any injustice was being perpetuated.

Yesterday, I was reminded of this story again when a brother suggested we put up articles about our great Muslim leaders and reformers as we need to educate non-Muslims about Islam and break down their misconceptions through the website. We also needed to educate Muslims that they have a history to be proud of and great leaders to drawn inspiration from. So this brother and I agreed, but I told him that because of the lack of manpower and technical expertise available the web team could only do a limited amount of work.

If MPACUK had skilled Muslims in the field of audio, video, php, Java and programming we could achieve a lot more and break down these misconceptions and educate more Muslims, but the reality is we have only a few freelancers working on one of the most visited Muslim Websites in the United Kingdom. If you have the skills and the dedication, why not put these skills to use in the defence of Islam? Email us on info@mpacuk.org

Anyway, back onto the topic. Imagine if this was Tony Blair? If he had in his heart the fear of Allah (God) and the love of his fellow country men, why isn't he roaming the streets to help the less fortunate ones? If Tony Blair was in doing his rounds in Ipswich, those women might now be alive, getting help to free themselves from drugs and prostitution. May Allah (SWT) bless our country with a leader who has the heart for his people and not for his personal gain.

The Kind Leader

One night, when Umar Ibn Al Khattab the Caliph was on his usual rounds in Madinah, he saw an old woman busy cooking something while her children cried continuously. Feeling pity for them, Umar asked why they were crying and the woman sadly told him that she had no food in the house and that there was only water in the pot on the fire. She was pretending to cook something until the children fell asleep. Umar was shocked by the misery he witnessed and thought, being the Caliph, he was responsible for their misfortune.

Umar immediately hurried away with his servant to the state storehouse and came back carrying flour, butter, dates, clothes and money. He had even refused to let his servant carry anything saying that he was responsible for the welfare of his people and that his servant would not be there on the Day of Judgment to carry his sins.

Umar reached the woman's house and started cooking the food himself. After every one had eaten, Umar started playing with the children and crawling around them as if he was a horse making them laugh and giggle. And he said "I saw them crying and I hated to leave them until I saw them laugh".

The woman replied: May Allah bless you. You are better than Umar Ibn Al Khattab himself!

So he said: And how is Umar supposed to know of your situation?

She said: He takes our welfare onto his shoulders (she is referring to him accepting the position of being Caliph) and forgets about us.

This made Umar cry and say: "All the people are more knowledgeable than Umar"

Help MPACUK share these great stories, and enable us to open the eyes of non-Muslims and enable Muslims to become like our great examples of the past. If you can help us with our website capabilities email info@mpacuk.org

Please, give me a break... not saying it's not a nice story -- but to then turn it against Tony Blair, and obviously imply that only devout Muslims can be compassionate leaders. I don't know if you've noticed but Medina circa whatever ancient time you're refering to in that story about the caliph is a vastly different place from London in 2006. Medina probably had a few thousand people at most at that time, while London has 8 million. Blair cannot and should not be wondering the streets looking for poor and fallen women. Besides here in Europe we have developed something called wellfare social democracy, so that the government through a burocracy guarantees the most disadvantaged citizens support ranging from rent-free apartments, to no need to pay taxes, to unemployment benefits, free and highly subsidized health care, and many more things... things you should be aware of since the Muslim community in UK and much of Europe is disproportionally poor and takes advantage of these benefits in very high numbers.
Maybe you and people in Muslim countries could learn about that type of efficient and compassionate government leadership and support. People in Muslim countries right now can only have wet dreams about this kind of benefits and protection of the poor, instead they have corrupt and/or fundamentalist governments that arent able to deliver on a tenth of things the UK government delivers to its poorer citizens -- so spare me the tales of piety from 800 years ago and your patronizing tone.

Tony Blair neither fears his God nor cares about his fellow men and women. Indeed if he did then he would not have lied in order to take our country into a war which was George Bush's plan probably even before 9/11 and he certainly would not have put at risk the lives of our Armed Forces in order to keep Bush happy.Blair should look at the Ten Commandments which as a Christian he should follow and remember that he has broken the one which states, 'Thou shalt not bear false witness'. We see in today's news that indeed he did lie about the WMD's in Iraq and of course he was visited by the police yesterday regarding the Cash for Peerages fiasco.

Another Commandment of course is, 'Thou Shalt Not Kill'. Well albeit indirectly, he is responsible for many deaths in Iraq and Afghanistan as well as the deaths of our servicemen who he sent out there after telling his lies.

How I would like to see his excuses on The Day of Judgement for then he will meet the One Who Knows All. No lies on that day Mr Blair.

Salaams.
Nobody should take away from the reputation of Caliph Umar RA. His concern that he might have missed any suffering of the people was so great it used to reduce him to tears. He did walk around the city to see if there was any help he could give to people.

Tony Blair's government has brought in hundreds if not thousands of new laws all of which they believe will help people and alleviate their suffering (in the UK). Many of the laws may be misguided and/or make matters worse, but it is unfair to say that there is little concern in the first place.

If we are to have any credibility as Muslims or even just as people, we MUST give other people credit where it is due.

Even if we HATE Tony Blair's foreign policy, that is no reason to be unjust about other aspects of his government.

It is for Muslims to follow the example of Umar RA., in whatever ways we can. This may even include considering sincere suggestions for improving the life of this society that may come from unexpected sources (in the view of some) such as the Tory party.

Humility, the acquisition of knowledge, the using of it for the benfit of all our fellow human beings/good manners are major duties of Muslims.
Jazaak Allah khair.

A welfare state is an integral part of the Islamic state which existed over 800 years ago. So don't tell me that we need to learn from you about welfare state which you only recenly implemented a few decades ago. This after you spent the last thousand years trying to colonise Islamic land and looting its resources, then putting in its place evil puppet governments which you keep in power and remove as you wish. Then you lecture about about how bad these governments are compared to yours!

Islam has recognized the right of the needy to assistance. "And in their wealth there is acknowledged right for the needy and the destitute" (51:19). In this verse, the Qur’an has not only conferred a right to every man who asks for assistance in the wealth of the Muslims, but has also laid down that if a Muslim comes to know that a certain man is without the basic necessities of life, then, irrespective of whether he asks for assistance or not, it is his duty to give all the help that he can.
For this purpose Islam does not depend only on voluntary charity, but has made compulsory charity, zakat, its third pillar, next only to the Prophet (blessings of Allah and peace be upon him) has clearly instructed us that: "It will be taken from their rich and given to those in the community in need" (Bukhari and Muslim).
In addition, it has also been declared that the Islamic State should support those who have nobody to support them. The Prophet has said: "The Head of State is the Guardian of him who has nobody to support him" (Abu Dawood, Tirmidhi). The word wali which is used by the Prophet has a wide range of meanings. It is the duty and the responsibility of the state to support and assist orphans, the old, the unemployed and the sick if they duty off the state to arrange for his burial. A true Islamic State is therefore a true welfare state.

Miguel,

Please try and look at history carefully - and then see if you can identify where the British imported or plagiarised the welfare system from...then you are in a position to comment.

The sheer magnitude of ignorance present in society is quite remarkable!

This story and the principle behind this strategy of having stories of the past is good.

But however I somewhat disagree of the tone and the manner you set the article.

Now, if our intentions are truly to do this for the sake Allah and we need to break down barriers amongst Muslims and Non-Muslims. Then we need to be a bit wiser and take the advise of Allah as He says in the Quran and give dawah with 'wisdom and beautiful preaching'

Now our goal should be even to give Dawah to Tony Blair. By disgracing Blair, you have straight away turned him away from this beautiful message.

Also, yes there are bad in the system we live in, but if you compare it with any Muslim country in the world, you will realise this country is far better, its democratic, free health care system, welfare system, affordable council housing. Yes they are not perfect but far better than any Muslim country, by anyone’s standards.

So, my point is tell the story just as it is, these stories are powerful enough to portray the message by itself. No need for the negativity and disgracing non-Muslims.

My tears rolled when I read:

'She was pretending to cook something until the children fell asleep.'

miguel you have missed the point of the article which was to compare leadership instead you turned into a religious issue.

yes we have the welfare state today which was developed around 50 years ago, but umar ibn al khattab developed the concept and put it into practice nearly 1400 years ago, his constant fear of neglecting his people made him a better leader than tony blair, who could not give two hoots what people think, the nearly two million who marched in london did nto register with him.

today in britain we have homeless people,we have people who go hungry-we have people who live below the poverty line-we have people who prostitute themselves to get by, this is the reality for some people.

If you, as a Muslim living in this country feels the need to do so, OK, go ahead and criticise your government led by Tony Blair. If you want to make analogies, do so,but let them be just and relevant.

I am one for whom Tony Blair and his gopvernment are a major major disappointment and in some aspects, a disgrace, but before you start comparing the government within a city 1400 years ago(where Umar RA walked, regardless of other lands that may have come under Muslim rule by that time) , with government of around 60,ooo,ooo people in today's UK, just stop and look at why these particular poor girls were prostitutes in the first place.

Then look at where the heroin came from and then look at what Tony Blair's government has done to try and stop the opium/heroin trade at source.
It has all gone horribly wrong, as many of us predicted, but the idea was not so bad.Over here the farmers are told to call it "diversification".

This letter may prompt all sorts of other accusations and counter arguments - many of them sounding like Alf Garnett only Muslim. Shouting and bawling at people dignifies no one and rarely if ever helps any cause.

It is better to tell the story of Umar RA elsewhere, rather than shoot oneself in the foot by using it to attack someone who, although maybe wrongly guided, has in fact done a great deal to try and prevent poverty in this country and also to prevent the illegal heroin trade.

As far as T. Blair is concerned - I can't stand the guy,but then he did not have the advantage of having been personally trained by the Final Messenger of God, did he? And even Umar, RA, used to admit sometimes of not knowing an answer or being unsure what to do - that is why he wept!!!_________________________________

Our so called welfare state will not be with us for much longer, thanks to Tony Blair and his cronies who are determined to privatise it, through the 'back door'. I have served in that NHS (welfare state) for 40 of its 60 years of existence and I am sad to see it disappearing day by day. Blair is determined to have all of our Medical Records and details on his 'big' computer which is in my mind making us into a 'Big Brother' state as no one really knows who will have access to these records.

We now have a 'war' to fight at home in order to keep our NHS public before we loose it altogether. Our Welfare State was founded by Mr Bevan in 1947 but at the rate we are going, will be destroyed by Mr Blair in 2007, before he leaves office. He wants to close hospitals and casualty units because he says people will get better treatment by having to travel 10 to 20 miles further. He wants to close Maternity Units. Well I suppose the paramedics will become expert at delivering babies in the back of the ambulances. We could re name them para midwives. Of course, the thing which worries me most is the possibility of an epidemic of Bird Flu which now that they want to close hospitals, the Government no longer seem to be talking about perhaps because if it does happen, there is no budget for it as the NHS is already bankrupt. If this epidemic does happen, God Forbid, where exactly does the Department of Health expect to treat the patients? This is not scare mongering, this is just a simple observation from someone who sees the situation now in our hospitals.

To Khadija if you beleive tony blair went to afghanistan to help the people of afghanistan or the british people then sadly the lies have worked.

Just to add were does the heroin come from you say, i am sure you do know that under tony blairs occupation of afghanistan opium production has gone up by 600 per cent, if we take this example then we can say it comes from tony blair.

if you look at the U.Ns report on drug production during the 4 or 5 years of mullah omars rule opium production had been drastically cut and if he had stayed in power today there would be no largscale opium production.

The majority of the british public do no trust him for this he has earned the title Tony Bliar.
