Recycling in your garden. Why compost? Because it's easy, natural, helps save money, improves the environment and saves space at the Central Landfill. Composting is the decomposition of organic material that occurs constantly in nature. It is a natural way to recycle yard trimmings and some food scraps that would otherwise be buried in the landfill. Composting changes these materials to produce a beneficial product that you can use on your lawn or in your flowerbeds and vegetable gardens. About 25-30 percent of the waste created in the home and garden is compostable material.

Get the most out of recycling in your garden

Join a communal garden scheme

If you don’t have a garden where you can recycle your organic waste, find out if there’s a communal scheme you can be involved in.

Bird scaring

String old CD's or milk bottle tops together to scare the birds away.

Bottle neck

Cut the necks off plastic bottles to concentrate watering.

Home made seed trays

Use old egg boxes as seed trays.

Recycled garden furniture

Buy recycled plastic for decking and garden furniture.

Naturally control your pests

Keep a pile of prunings/clippings in a corner of the garden to encourage toads and hedgehogs for natural pest control.

Old toilet rolls

Use old toilet rolls to grow your seedlings in.

Reuse your tea bags

To fill in gaps in your lawn, sow grass seed on used tea-bags and use them to fill the holes.

Add cereal boxes

Tear up cereal packets into small pieces and add the card to your home composter. M Wards "Our compost is very successful and the worms love it!"
