War Criminal Sentenced, but Will He Suffer? Print E-mail
Wednesday, 27 September 2006

Momclio Krajisnik, former head of the wartime Bosnian Serb Parliament, was today sentenced to 27 years on five counts of crimes against humanity. As head of Parliament he was responsible for the deaths and expulsion of millions of Muslims in Bosnia during the 1992-95 war.

The war crimes trial was held at The Hague, by a UN tribunal. This trial was especially poignant after the trial of Slobodan Milosevic, former Serbian President, was inconclusive after his death earlier in the year.

The atrocious crimes against humanity were carried out during the 1992-1995 war, in which, approximately 70, 000 Muslims were killed and nearly 2 million were displaced.

The judge found that the purpose of the mass “extermination” was in order to “ethnically recompose the territories” by reducing numbers of Bosnian Muslims and Croats in these areas.

The trial will however, will not bring back the thousands of lives lost from this inhumane genocide that was carried out purely on racist grounds. The lives that were lost were seen by the political leadership of the Bosnian Serb Parliament as a necessary consequence in order to achieve “Serb domination”.

What we can hope for is that crimes like these come to an end and that those perpetrators are held accountable for their malevolent actions. We should also hope that Krajisnik repents for the wickedness that he carried out. He may be sentenced to 27 years imprisonment but it is unlikely that he will ever be able to imagine the suffering that he inflicted on the thousand of Muslims.

Let's remember the lives that have been lost to genocide in our prayers this Ramadan.

This man deserved his punishment, of that there can be no doubt. However it would be equally unjust to overlook the history of massacre stretching back to World War 2 when the Hunzar SS division massacred thousands of Serbs.
Balkan history is littered with terrible massacres, one religious or antional group against another, with only Gypsies, Jews and Tsintsars being free of such taints. As a consequence neither the Bosniaks, Croats, Serbs nor Schqip (Albanians) can claim the moral highground.
The terrible cycle of violence can only be ended when every side owns up to its own vile sins. It is thus time for those that claim leadership of these groups, and those that identify with them, to acknowledge their own criminality. A little humility at this point is desperately needed. This man has been convicted but there remain many on all sides who have guilt writ large upon their brows.

This man is a war criminal who conducted "GENOCIDE" and Ethnic Cleansing along with other Serb war criminals. The Europeans and the West in general were in a hurry to condemn the Germans after WW2 and Saddam of Iraq of crimes against humanity but not this man. What about Karadic and Mladic, why not bomb Serbia and kill thousands of innocents, destroy infrastructure, etc., until they get these two "dead or alive" where is the justice for Bosnian Muslims.

Guard the Guards,
While it clearly has escaped your notice, NATO did bomb Serbia and the Serbian enclaves in Bosnia.
Part of the failure of the problem of the West's response to the break-up of Yugoslavia was in allowing the Greek government the role of lead EU country. The Greeks have a peculiar foreign policy in which they are very supportive and sympathetic to the Palestinian cause, but aggressively indifferent to the sufferings of their Albanian and Bosnian neighbours.
The Greeks were material beneficiaries of the the Holocaust and carries out their own vicious episode of ethnic cleansing at the end of WW2 against Slav Macedonians and Turks. The Greek government is determined that the Slavs, Turks and Jews do not exercise their rights to recompense for their losses in WW2 and after.
To compound this many people expressed allegiance to Serbia on the basis of their suffering in WW2 at the hands of the Germans and their Bosnian and Croat allies.

The Greeks share the Orthodox Christian faith of the Serbs (as well as the Islamophobia resulting from their burning desire to "avenge the Ottoman Yoke" ). I suspect another factor was that the British and French foreign offices were still in a habit of viewing Serbia as a bulwark against German influence in the Balkans.
