T&G general secretary Tony Woodley pointed to the findings of a new ICM poll which found 95 per cent think Labour should do more to act on the concerns of working people.
He said the results of the survey, published on Friday, show that Labour voters want policy change on key issues including employment rights for working people, foreign policy, manufacturing, pensions and privatisation.
Of those questioned, 91 per cent said the Labour government should be more proactive in supporting manufacturing and 60 per cent did not want anymore involvement of the private sector in health and education.
"Labour's voters could not be sending a clearer message to the Labour Party leadership about the need for a change in policy direction," Woodley said.
"These are the people who have given Labour the ability to govern for nine years, and the party ignores them at their peril.
"All those wanting to stand for leader or deputy leader should be paying attention to the findings of this poll and looking for ways to address the concerns of working people."
Meanwhile, a separate study indicated how important funding from the unions still continues to be for the Labour Party.
The Labour Research magazine survey found that all the political parties are struggling to maintain donations, with Labour relying heavily on trade union support.
The study compared party funding figures in the periods July 2004 to June 2005, which covers the last general election, and July 2005 to June 2006.
It shows that the financial link between the unions and Labour Party remains strong even though overall funding for the party fell sharply in the post-election period.
In the later period, the Labour Party received a total of £11.7m in donations from trade unions, individuals, companies and other political organisations - a post-election slump of 45 per cent.
Union contributions to the party have fallen, but as other revenue sources have also decreased, unions are still contributing roughly the same proportion of money as for the 2004/05 period - supplying 65 pence in every pound.
The Conservative Party has the highest level of funding and experienced no post-election drop - but only because three companies recently made generous donations.
Donations to the Liberal Democrats have dropped dramatically, making them heavily reliant on money from public sources.

I have a problem with MPACUK, when it acquiesces with the reactionary agenda of ignorant extremist groups that all British politicians are evil are Islam's enemies and complicit in Israel and America's genocide crimes.
What we risk doing in thinking like this is putting ourselves in a situation like our American brothers of not even having the choice of distinguishing between the lesser of two evils.
The young Labour leadership which has been in power since 1997 has been the most Muslim-friendly in Brittan ever.
Those who disagree with me can be referred to the '70's style perverse arrogant racist disdain with which the governments of Margaret Thatcher and John Major dismissed Muslims whether it was the Jewish take-over of the BCCI bank or Desert Storm I.
This is not to condone the criminals Jack Straw's and Tony Blair's blind support of Israel in its crimes against humanity. But this is to wake up MPACUK and other Muslim organizations that represent Muslim interests in the UK to distinguish between their friends and foes. The best option that Muslims have even just now is to support Gordon Brown for Prime Minister. Mr. Brown is a brilliant, sincere and honest person who possibly will give Muslims a fairer deal than all the candidates of the Zionist lobby put together whether it is Alan Johnson the school-leaver or David Cameron the sick-looking psychopathic murderer.
I want to once again remind Muslims about the late Robin Cook, a former Foreign Secretary and the best friend Muslims ever had in Parliament who died last year disillusioned by his forced resignation from Parliament by the Jewish lobby on the eve of the war on Iraq in 2003.
Some Zionist circles have publicly through their favourite media outlet BBC started demanding mid-term elections to prevent Gordon Brown from assuming power. Others are putting forward retired and retarded friends of Israel to unseat Gordon Brown. Still others are floating the hilariously idiotic proposal of a leadership contest between Gordon Brown and the leader of the insignificant demented imperialist fantasists --- David Cameron.
If MPACUK, like al-fuqara, al-ghuraba, al-munafiqoon, al-jahiloon and other those embarrassing names that medievalist cartoon creations of MI-5 and Scotland Yard go, start shooting themselves in the foot and digging their own roots by criticizing the Labour party , the result will be the return to power of the Tory party with the Zionist lobby's support which is led by David Cameron a committed cannibal and psycho who believes in bombing Muslim men, raping Muslim women and eating Muslim babies like any honourable Israeli statesman who will perpetrate atrocities on Muslims in the UK and the world over .
If MPACUK and Muslim organizations do not do not mark my words and correct their "Qibla”, my words will get lost in cyberspace or blown away by the wind but the UK Muslim community and the rest of the Muslim world will pay for it.
The Muslim political Qibla lies in stopping and defeating the murderous David Cameron, in supporting the Labour Party and in supporting Gordon Brown within the Labour Party. It is a Holy Duty upon us British Muslims to lend our support to a leader who will be beneficial for all the Muslims on this earth and that is why we must support Gordon Brown.
Israel and the USA have been committing atrocities against Muslims for years but we Muslims must weigh our options before we can blame Labour for Bushian and Zionist crimes.
I hope I have corrected your Qibla for the survival of the Muslim cause!
