Sunday, 06 August 2006

Channel 4 News presenter Jon Snow tackles one of the most difficult and controversial questions facing our country today: to what extent do Muslims in Britain pose a threat to this country and its values? There is a growing fear that the 1.6 million Muslims in Britain are rejecting the majority liberal, tolerant beliefs in this country for a radicalised version of Islam in which violence can be justified. Dispatches has conducted the most comprehensive and rigorous survey to date of Muslim opinion in Britain, with startling results.

On Channel 4 at 8pm.

i think there were 4 people who were a risk last july 7th. it's comments like yours sirb that lead to programmes such as tonights being made. muslims need to stop being defensive and accept there are genuine problems in our community that need to be addressed.

This programme did not fill me with confidence, but MPAC seemed to be the one organisation that I feel that mainstream non-muslim British people could really engage with. It's fear that drives Islamophobia, and if muslims and non-muslims could eat together, talk about politics and even disagree, at least the debate would happen! I feel like too many non-muslims feel that the muslim community is secretly supporting terror but providing lip service to integrating in Britain, and too many young muslims are angry with British culture. We must talk, or there's no hope! Only love, and genuine understanding will bridge this gap. As a white, Christian, British citizen, I do not want to be alienated from a single British muslim, full stop. Who can help me mend the divide?

In the information at the side of this comments window commentators are requested to avoid offensive language and not to troll. (I'm not sure what troll means.)

The previous comment by "SirB" is dated before the prog was shown. Jon Snow is one, if not the, best journalist in this country and the word whore is inappropriate and offensive. I would find it's use offensive in any case. As it is one usually used to offend women.

Have just watched the prog and was interested to hear one of the founders of MPAC say that non-Muslims could be invited to mosque's to discuss what it is they "fear" about Islam.

I think that would be a really good idea, and I was both suprised and please that it was suggested.

I enjoyed the programme - and especially enjoyed the section in which the MPAC representatives in the UK were so positive. I hope that their message is continually reinforced in such a positive manner to the British... of all backgrounds.

I only caught half the programme but it sounded to me like Muslims are being presented to the country by proxy. The cause for this is limited engagement in British society. I hope that some day all the voluntary hours given up to the service of mosques can be channelled into developing so many Muslim communities who are not being represented by articulate and reasoned leaders with an understanding of the real issues we are faced with. Has it now become an act of terror to have a view on injustice not only against Muslims but any minority available at the time.

A very though provoking progamme for all, Muslim and non Muslim alike. What I found somewhat disconcerting were the views of young men who believe (or were they having a laugh?)in the Bush / Bin Ladin conspiracy theory behind 9/11 and the plot about the death of Princess Dianna.

I liked the idea of open days at Mosques proposed by the MPAC rep. When you have some in South Wales please publisize them.

I watched this with open eyes and did the most important thing anyone can do. I listned. I know understand more about my Muslim neighbours and feel there is so much of their faith and way of life the rest of us can benefit from. You MPAC guys really gave me hope. You are bridging the gap of communication that out political and religious leaders are failing to build. I see now that all the media do in most cases is report on the negitive aspects of both our cultures so we both never get the honest truth. I think we should have a dedicated MP in government speeking on behalf of Muslims. You should be proud of what your are doing. Well done.

I watched with interest the John Snow program. He did interview a variety of people, which was good. My only gripe was with the guy who interrupted in the park. He went on about handouts and schooling etc.
I can't stand people like him who still have that immigrant mentality where they think that we are second class citizens and that we should be grateful to the government if we happen to be in the unfortunate position to claim and benefits or attend schooling in this country. When will these people get it through their thick skull that we are not the immigrants anymore and we all pay taxes which entitles us to education and health care just like anyone else.

Well Snow ranted about "freedom of speech", well takes this point up. What about removing the preferential treatment israelis get, e.g. "protection" of "their" religion, the publically funded schools, using OUR passports to commit mass murder - terrorism. Where is the prosecution for geneocide against the fifth column??

A outright ban on israeli reporters should be in place. Then the UK will gain its International place.

I was actually less impressed with this programme than I expected to be. I felt Jon Snow was speaking too much about "us" and "them", which, to my mind, serves only to aggravate divisions.
I agree with JB, above, that MPAC seems to be the organisation with its feet on the ground. (You should deal with the Wikipedia article, tho.)
I'm a practising atheist but we too are a moral people.
My support, therefore.
Peace.
