UK Falls Silent For 7/7 Victims Print E-mail
Friday, 07 July 2006

Britain fell silent at noon for two minutes to mark the first anniversary of the London bombings that claimed 52 lives and injured hundreds.

The silence is one of the events taking place to commemorate the 7 July suicide attacks on the capital.

Flowers were laid at the sites where bombs went off on three Tube trains and a bus at the times of the blasts.

Tony Blair said the anniversary of the attacks was an opportunity for "the whole nation to come together".

A public ceremony with readings will be held later in Regent's Park.

PUBLIC EVENTS

0800-1600 : Public invited to add flowers to mosaic in Queen Mary's Gardens, Regent's Park.
1200 : National two-minute silence
1230 : Multi-faith service of remembrance, St Pancras Church, Euston Road
1800-1830 : Commemorative event, Queen Mary's Gardens, Regent's Park

The two-minute silence was being observed across the country, including the Wimbledon tennis championships and at other events.

The commemoration comes as Metropolitan Police Commissioner Sir Ian Blair gave a firm warning London must expect another attack.

"I know there will be further attacks, but as to whether we will stop those, well we've stopped three already," Sir Ian told BBC News.

And Colin Cramphorn, chief constable of the West Yorkshire force said he believed other 7 July-style attacks in the UK were "not just fanciful" but "very possible".

On Thursday, a video of one of the bombers, Shehzad Tanweer, was aired on al-Jazeera television. It showed the 22-year-old, from Leeds, warning of further attacks.

Private events

Members of the public have been laying purple carnations within a floral mosaic in Queen Mary's Gardens, Regent's Park.

Later, survivors and the bereaved will complete the centre of the mosaic with yellow gerberas, and the public can pay their respects over the weekend.

Mr Livingstone was joined by Culture Secretary Tessa Jowell in laying flowers at King's Cross station - which became a main focus for tributes in the aftermath of the attacks - at the exact time of the Underground bombings.

Mr Livingstone told the BBC News website Friday was a time to remember those individuals whose lives had been ruined by the attack.

It was also and a time to be proud of London's unique character, which had been a source of envy to the bombers, he said.

7 JULY ASSISTANCE CENTRE

Confidential helpline to provide advice and support to anyone affected by events of 7 July or the anniversary
Phones manned 24 hours from 5-10 July
Centre and helpline open seven days a week at all other times - answerphone service at night
Also supports those affected by recent bombings in Doha, Sharm El Sheikh, Turkey, Bali and Dahab, and Bahrain boat disaster
Helpline - 0845 054 7444

Ms Jowell said the government would not be granting the wishes of many relatives to hold a public inquiry into the events.

She said an inquiry would mean an "enormous diversion of security resources which need to be directed to preventing this happening again".

Richard Innishannon - one of the first on the scene at the Tavistock Square bus bombing - was among those gathered at King's Cross.

He said he has been so traumatised by what he saw a year ago that he has only been on a train once since.

"My stomach is in knots but I don't live that far from here and I just felt that I had to be here today."

Memorial plaques

The bells of London's St Paul's Cathedral tolled at 0850 BST to mark a year since the bombs went off on trains near Aldgate and Edgware Road stations, and on another travelling between King's Cross and Russell Square.

They also tolled an hour later to mark the fourth blast on the number 30 double-decker bus at the junction of Tavistock Square and Upper Woburn place.

Other events on Friday will be held in private for victims' families and survivors.

Memorial plaques at King's Cross, Russell Square, Edgware Road, Aldgate and Tavistock Square were unveiled.

A Book of Tributes, with a foreword from the Prince of Wales and tributes from the bereaved, will also be unveiled in a private event.

Commuters across the capital have seen a high-visibility police presence on the transport network.

The 7 July Assistance Centre can be contacted on 0845 054 7444.

Silence? What for? To commemorate the victims of Iraq? Afghanistan?

Wait, hold on. That's not right is it? They're just rag heads and don't count.

THE CCTV PHOTO OF THE 4 BOMBERS ENTERING LUTON STATION - LOOK AT THE THIRD MAN WITH THE WHITE CAP ON. LOOK AT HIS LEFT ARM. The lower of the rails of the railing is IN FRONT of his left arm! NICE PHOTOSHOP JOB.

HERE IS THE PHOTO IS FROM THE MET'S OWN WEBSITE -

Its suprising how everyone has fallen into the TRAP created by the media since the main debate today is "Islamic extremism"

The London bombing was a result of our governments illegal invasion of Iraq, they are the extreme ones and are to blame for London being bombed and the deaths of the innocent civilians.

The muslims especially should not fall into this trap and continue thus debate because it has NOTHING to do with muslims. Why should they be blamed for Blair and Bush's war??

Assalamu' alaikumIn around 25 years of conflict with the IRA I don't remember of any chat shows dealing with the problems of Christian terrorism...why British born catholics are planting bombs in London, Manchester etc or any memorials on the scale of 7/7Victims are victims and we should feel compassion for them, but I'm still waiting for a hotline to call for Haditha, Grozny and Falluja

An inquiry will actually determine how it was done, so, to not have an inquiry, is like saying,"we know how it was done." Then they hypocritically say, "enormous diversion of security resources which need to be directed to prvent this from happening again."

Yeah? Well, figure out how it happened for real. Then, you can put prevention measures.

How about tracing it back to the inner thought of a Police State the way American is becoming.

dont you think an inquiry will point in the direction of blairs policies. all the more reason not to have one.

i get the feeling that blair is almost encouraging anti islam/muslim sentiment in the uk.

when he calls evil clerics, evil mosques when there was no evidence to make these claims. clarke yesterday said that muslims were in a deranged cult and likened it to waco.

since we already have a lot of the laws now in place to implement a police state is blair wanting to encourage dischord and a 'military style coup' of this country?

his staying as leader serves no purpose for this country or the labour party so why wont he go?

that picture on the met police site is certainly interesting.

2 minute silence don't think so, the day these kuffar governments start to have silent minutes for the hundreds of thousands of muslims they ritually slaughter almost every year then they will have a valid point!

You people just don't get it. You came to this country 30 or 40 years ago (just like my Greek Dad) I am English, my Dad supports England and pays allegance to the Queen. You people refuse to mix or assimilate in any way, you view yourselves as Muslim before British, tell me if land of Islam is so great why do you all live here? with your religious political views and your conspiratorial moonshine you will breed disharmony and bring war to this land. As you will throughout Europe, and as you have done throughout history. And then when goodness and humanity win through you will start the process again, but instead of Grozny, Fallujah and Gaza it will be Paris London and Berlin.

Still people here try to justify the actions of these idiots. 2 million protested but would not dream of blowing up their own. It shows many muslims still have not got a grasp of politics and democracy with their suicide bomber mentality

In response to ANON's comment regarding the cctv. I had a look at the photo you mentioned and at first was surprised to see what you had actually said. Yes, it does appear the third chap's left arm is behind the lower railing.

However on closer inspection, thats not his arm. In fact its the corner of the wall which actually runs down from the top of the pic. The chap's arm is actually bent away from the side of his body as if he has placed it in his left pocket.

The middle railing actually hits his left elbow and (quite rightly) disapears behind his arm. The lower railing therefore does not meet his arm. I hope that clears things up a little.

Mr Patel

So you condone the 7/7 bombings then ? How very nice of you. If you are suggesting we should have a minutes silence for all those afghans murdered by the Taleban prior to 2001 or all the shia's murdered by the Shias in Iraq I'm all for it! But no, as usual muslims killing mulsims (or anybody else for that matter) is brushed under the carpet by people like you. Yes the US and to a lesser extent the UK prosecuted the war a s stupid manner , killing a number of civilians, and shame on them for doing so. However the ongoing violence against civilains (e.g. the shia gunman murdering 41 sunnis in Bagdad) is yet another muslim blood bath.

TO MR DIN

The difference between the scum in the IRA and islamic terrorist scum is that the IRA were not fighting a religous war. The IRA want a united ireland , and as you should re-call a political compromise (even if it is shaky) was found. The islamic facists in Al Quaeda (and Mr Choudary and his friends) want the total destruction of our way of life and no less and if that involves killing us all to achieve that , it appears its fine with them.

The other difference was that the IRA generally (but not always) gave warnings as they wanted to cause maximum disruption rather than body count. With the islamic mob , they want to kill and maim as many as possible (e.g. London , Mardrid and Mumbai)

Very smiply if you do not like our values, the fact that this country is basd on christian values, and is tolerante to other faiths But is NEVER going to become a muslim state, then go to muslim state where I'm sure with the wonderful record they have on human rights, famine , mutilation, supression of women, terrorism you'll fit in just fine!!

I still can't understand why people are still blaiming the foriegn policy for this, although it might have been instramental you don't decide to kill aload of innocent people in the country that invaded yours. It is one of the main things that is damaging the Muslim community and turning the non-Muslims against you. All acts of terror against civillian targets and militery alike only turn people against you. If Muslims reallt want people to regard their religion with peace and not bombs they must rize about petty retaliations and prove it, the suicide bomber is the geeatest thret to Islam in this day and age
