DEFENDING CIVIL LIBERTIES

THE CHALLENGE FOR BLACK AND MUSLIM COMMMUNITIES - LESSONS FROM AMERICA

Lecture followed by Questions

We read much about the challenges to fundamental civil liberties that have been arising from the Bush administration's war on terror. However, there is little first hand experience of what is happening on the ground in the US. Those involved in the struggle to defend the civil liberties of minority communities in the UK have a unique opportunity to hear from an experienced civil rights campaigner and internationally acknowledged Professor of Law.

Professor Adrien Wing A.B. Princeton University, 1978, M.A. University of California at Los Angeles, 1979, J.D. Stanford Law School, 1982.

Professor Adrien Wing A.B. Princeton University, 1978, M.A. University of California at Los Angeles, 1979, J.D. Stanford Law School, 1982.Has over 30 years' experience of involvement in progressive movements from the US to South Africa and Palestine. There are important lessons to be learnt from the US experience and this event is a discussion on what tactics should be employed by activists in ensuring that any mistakes made in the US by the civil rights movement are not repeated in the UK. In view of Professor Wing's experience of other struggles, she has a deep insight into the strategies and models that are appropriate for the defence of civil liberties and effective campaigning.

This event will be an opportunity for activists from the anti racist movement to join up with Muslim activists and begin to chart the future goals for a unified movement which will ensure that the injustices currently being experienced are exposed so as to create an agenda for equality, justice and fairness for all.
