Ruqayyah Collector, the incumbent Education Officer of Leeds University Union, has successfully been elected for the position of the National Black Student Officer, at this year’s NUS Annual Black Student Conference.
The two day event was hosted in Birmingham, between the 20th and 21st of May, in which Ruqayyah won by an outstanding 56 votes out of a total of 66, beating off her rival the current President of the University of Portsmouth Students’ Union. Throughout this prominent year-long office term, Ruqayyah along with the other members of the newly elected committee will be responsible for representing and lobbying on behalf of students of African, Asian and Caribbean descent, at a local and national level. The committee tackles issues affecting Black students, and ensures that the perspectives of ethnic students are fully integrated into the fabric of student unions and society.
