Today, 29th November, marks the 60th anniversary of the adoption by the
United Nations of Resolution 181. That Resolution partitioned British
Mandate Palestine into two states: a "Jewish state" and an "Arab state"
- without Palestinians being consulted about their land. It also set in
motion the dispossession, oppression and forced migration of millions
of Palestinian people.
The outcome of the current Annapolis Conference, which is being tilted
in favour of the occupying force, Israel, would certainly undermine and
compromise the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people.

Trying to get mosques activated in campaigning on issues that impact seriously on their congregations is, to say the least, a difficult business. The first thing is to try and contact them to explain the whole issue. Of the mosques with published telephone numbers a portion of them are dud numbers, others ring but no one picks up, others ring and are only picked up at certain times (e.g. after Zuhr). Of the phones that are answered, the chances of getting a fluent English speaker is also quite slim.

It must have been one of the most unbelievable jaw-dropping evil
judgements passed since the dawn of history by any judge. Tony Blair
and George Bush would have been proud of themselves for thinking up a
law that was so unjust to Muslims as diabolical as this one was. I am of course talking about the judge who sentenced a woman who was raped to being whipped for sitting in a car with a guy.

Today, I was walking by one of the Islamic goods shops near my house when I saw on display a poster which was advertising regular meetings that the store was holding. The meetings were for Muslim converts who wanted to learn more about their faith, or just wanted to hear about other people's experiences. I was really pleased that someone was doing such a noble deed and went to congratulate the owner.

Last summer the British Medical Journal published two articles in a "head-to-head" feature asking the question: Should we consider a boycott of Israeli academic institutions? Tom Hickey wrote the article supporting the motion, and Michael Baum against. As you can imagine this topic caused quite a stir in the BMJ forum which is still ongoing. One of the posts which stood out was by Dr Asad Khan which we've repoduced here for your perusal...

Just like the black mind was once taught to hate itself, we are now
taught the same. Just as once the blacks were demonised and were
brought to the west as nothing but animals to be traded or killed, so
we too are now being demonised. Instead of Muslim leaders stepping up and waking our community up,
organising it, protecting it, educating it …they act worse then any
traitor in our history and keep us asleep and paralysed in the face of
our own doom.

The 'phone rang. ‘Hello. This is Abul Taher from the Sunday Times.' I had spoken to this reporter a number of times. He was always snooping about some anti-Muslim story, but I had pretty much batted him off without insulting him. Today was going to be different. ‘I am going ahead with the story about a prominent Muslim who has links with MPACUK’.' I scratched my head …err ok but that was going to be one boring story. I can see the headlines now ‘Muslim has links to Muslim group!’

The decision to exert pressure on Hamas by denying entry to sick Palestinians is immoral and inhumane. The State of Israel invests more than a third of its national budget on security expenditures, equips itself with sophisticated advanced weapons, builds fences and walls, and utilizes an army and secret services. However, it appears all these efforts are in vain. Israel’s security situation is apparently so unstable that six very sick Palestinians residing in Gaza threaten Israelis to such extent that public and media pressure is required in order to prompt the defense establishment to let them leave the Strip in order to receive medical attention.

For so many years, I’ve wanted to have our own TV broadcasting studio but I couldn't find a mentor from my own community. Looking for one in our community was like looking for a needle in a haystack. That caused a lot of challenges but it also raised questions regarding where our community is today, and the question of my commitment. So, I had to learn everything myself.

We, the people are the government. From the Black communities to the
Muslim community – they have one thing in common. They are waiting for
someone else to do the work in mosques, in creating programmes that
will enable the youth to be active in their own legacy. They are
waiting for someone else to create a media tool or a process to develop
and teach politics and media savvy techniques.

Britain’s MPs are being urged by one of the world’s leading civil-rights lawyers to resist pressure to extend the 28-day time limit for holding terror suspects. Sir Sydney Kentridge, QC, who once defended Nelson Mandela and the family of Steve Biko during South Africa’s apartheid era, told the Bar Conference in London on Saturday that MPs should be sceptical about moves to go beyond the current 28-day maximum.

The official figures of stop and search under anti-terrorism laws have been released and you, my dear Muslim reader, should not be surprised. According to the figures, only one in every 400 stop and searches carried out leads to an arrest and as you would assume most of those stopped are Muslim (there has been an 84% rise in Asians stopped!)

"WARNING!" screamed the flyer being thrust into my hand by a concerned-looking young religious man as I entered the hall. "American Jews are in danger!" it continued. "Countless Neo-Nazi groups are spreading their venemous [sic] message ... at public demonstrations calling for violence against Jews ... and praising Hitler as a 'true hero'!"

Did the Channel 4 drama, Britz, reinforce stereotypes of British Muslims, or was it an entertaining thriller? Are you fed up with the way Muslims are portrayed on TV? The British Muslim Forum campaigned C4 to not air the program. Do you agree with their actions? Post comments on this article telling us what you think.
UPDATE - Added Podcast: BBC Asian Network discusses the portrayal of Muslims in the media. Panel includes Moazzam Begg, Saba Zaman, and MPACUK's Catherine Heseltine, among others.

It is long overdue but the Conservative Muslim Forum has finally done the decent thing and stuck up for the truth. David Cameron tries to portray himself as the all things to all men type of Conservative. The poor man’s toff if you will, but he is an out and out Zionist and despite the photo opportunities, his Muslim friendly credentials are questionable to say the least.

Policy Exchange, a right-wing think tank, has recently published a report called “The Hijacking of British Islam”. This is not the first report issued by the neo-con endorsing think tank on the subject of Islam. However a theme can be detected in all its reports on Islam; namely government disengagement from the Muslim Council of Britain and promotion of the Sufi Muslim Council. This is curious as the think tank feels it is in a position to judge which organisation should be representing Britain's Muslims instead of the Muslims themselves.

In what world do these people live? True, there'll be no public executions outside Buckingham Palace when His Royal Highness rides in stately formation down The Mall. We gave up capital punishment about half a century ago. There won't even be a backhander – or will there? – which is the Saudi way of doing business. But for King Abdullah to tell the world, as he did in a BBC interview yesterday, that Britain is not doing enough to counter "terrorism", and that most countries are not taking it as seriously as his country is, is really pushing it. Weren't most of the 11 September 2001 hijackers from – er – Saudi Arabia? Is this the land that is really going to teach us lessons?

In the wake of the conviction of the ‘Cambridge letter bomber' last
month, The Muslim News set out to find why, unlike numerous cases
involving Muslims, Miles Cooper who had - searched the internet,
amassed explosives and successfully activated bombs to make a political
point - was not arrested nor charged under the new terror legislation.

One of the unique competitive advantages that MPACUK have over other
groups is our ability to live by our creed. When MPACUK talk about
Mosque reform, we are not just happy for the word and message to be
adopted; we don’t see as a success measure the adoption of the word as
a goal in itself. We want to see Mosques reform to serve and defend
their community and religion. When we talk about Palestine, we then
work to see pressure placed on Israel until there is a ‘just’
settlement.

I have read a number of
emails and articles circulated by MPACUK on the state of the Muslims. I agree with
a lot that has been said but sometimes questioning the language and method used
to make the point. No questions about it we are in a mess. We look at counterpart groups and it
hurts me to say that we have to learn from their efficiency and organisation.
We have the True Religion so what has gone wrong? Why can Muslims be trampled
on? Why don't we have a say in politics?
