The Qur'an, when properly recited, is beautiful, powerful and awe-inspiring. Men of the past were brought to tears over its beauty and were willing to give everything for the Creator of such timeless pearls. With this in mind, I would like to discuss one such pearl - Surah Al Asr. Reading this small Surah from the Qur'an, I can’t help but marvel at the relevance and, please indulge me, the relevance it has to MPACUK's message.
Inner city Muslims and friends will be taking to the streets of inner
city Birmingham on 23rd September to launch a jihad (struggle) against
waste. Rappers, drummers, flag wavers with litter pickers to hand will
converge on Small Heath’s Somerville Road to clean up the district. Tired of rubbish-strewn streets, Muslims have decided to clean up and
recycle, going from mosque to mosque, starting with Noor ul Uloom
mosque, Birmingham’s oldest.
Allah ta’aalaa has placed the desire for progress, and the spirit of mutual competitiveness that accompanies it, into the very nature of man. It is natural for individuals and communities to strive to better themselves and achieve progress. As Muslims, we should open the pages of history and discover and adopt those factors which make a nation prosperous, as long as they fall within the bounds of the Sharee‘ah, so that we too can reap the Deeni and worldly benefits of progress.
In 2001 shocking reports surfaced from Gaza of summer schools being organised
by Islamic Jihad, which were teaching Palestinian adolescents to become suicide
bombers. The Israeli government denounced the camps as evidence that a new
generation was being brought up to hate and to kill.
"I have authorized our military commanders in Iraq to confront Tehran's
murderous activities" George Bush's address to war veterans in Nevada on 28th August was a carefully
choreographed and unambiguous declaration of war on Iran. Bush accused the Iranian government of being behind the insurgency in Iraq as
well as assisting the Taliban in Afghanistan. He said "We must confront these
dangers before it's too late ... We will fight them over there so we do not have
to face them in the United States of America."
Victims of the 7 July London suicide bombers have launched legal action
against the government over its refusal to hold a public inquiry into
the attacks. Bereaved relatives and survivors have applied for a judicial review of
the government's refusal to hold an inquiry into the attacks, which
killed 56 people in London in 2005.
A young Muslim woman who was Islamophobically assaulted has accused
Glasgow police of “not caring”. There has been an increase in racist
and Islamophobic attacks in Glasgow since the failed Glasgow airport
attack. 130 racial incidents were reported last month, out of which 25
cases had the airport attack mentioned.
The president of the Union for Reform Judaism accused American media,
politicians and religious groups on Friday of demonising Islam. Addressing the annual convention of the Islamic Society of North
America, Rabbi Eric Yoffie said Muslims have been turned into "satanic
figures."There exists in this country among all Americans, whether Jews,
Christians, or non-believers, a huge and profound ignorance about Islam

The British Zionist Federation cancelled a London appearance by Ha'aretz columnist Danny Rubinstein the day after he called Israel an “apartheid state” at a United Nations conference on Palestinians. Rubinstein, the Israeli newspaper's Arab affairs editor and a member of its editorial board, told an audience of some 350 people that "today Israel is an apartheid state with different status for different communities,”
The biggest risk to David Cameron's leadership to date has been his appointment of Sayeeda Warsi as the shadow minister for community cohesion. Warsi's rise makes Cameron's ascent from freshman MP to leader in four years look almost sedate. In just two years she has gone from failed parliamentary candidate to being responsible for, perhaps, the most sensitive portfolio in opposition politics.
Last Friday, I was
all set to give a Khutba about the need for Muslims to plan ahead on an
individual and community level. My notes were ready and I was in full "Khutba
mode". But before sermon time, I decided to change the topic completely -- to
talk about the exclusion of Muslim women from the mosque and community life.
A year on from the Danish Cartoon row another Nordic newspaper has published cartoons insulting the Prophet Muhammad, may the peace and blessings of Allah be upon Him. This time the culprit is Sweden's Nerikes Allehanda newspaper which has published a cartoon depicting the face of the Prophet on the body of a dog!
Everyday Muslims take part in an auspicious act where they show their obedience and gratitude to Allah and pray five times a day. This beautiful gift from Allah was handed to the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) when he made the blessed ascension to Heaven. However, before we were ordered to face the Kaabah in Makkah, the Muslims used to pray towards Al-Aqsa in Palestine.

A woman felt "violated" when a man pulled off her religious headscarf - hijab - as she walked along a north Wales street pushing a pushchair. Mold Crown Court heard that Damien French, 21, of Rhyl, had a previous conviction for animal cruelty when he fed a live zoo rabbit to an alligator. French admitted racially aggravated common assault and a racially aggravated public order offence. Adjourning sentence, the judge warned French he could still face prison.
Rochdale based Sports 4 All united different communities during their popular community cricket cohesion match. The
group invited mosques, young people and local councillors to take part
in the match which was held at Matthew Moss cricket ground. Organisers say the 20-20 cricket match was played in excellent spirits.
At a friend’s
prompting I watched last night’s Newsnight on BBC. Tony Benn, as
always, was formidable (even though I lost considerable respect for him
when he chose to campaign for New Labour in the 2005 election). And the
Israel Lobby’s Mike Gapes MP (whose constituency incidentally includes
a large number of Muslims, who vote for him for the same reason they
sell the Sun, News of the World and the Daily Mail –
tabloids that relish in their Islamophobic bigotry) was predictably
keen to spill more British blood for the benefit of a foreign state.
LABOUR leaders were last night facing a party funding inquiry after donations were given by an organisation called Muslim Friends of Labour. The Electoral Commission is examining donations of more than £300,000 to the Scottish Labour Party from the Muslim group. Every person who donates more than £5,000 to a political party has to make their donation public.
I want you to imagine a Muslim group that did not stand by debating minor points of theology while you and your family was demonised in the press or by Government. I want you to imagine a Muslim group that was not afraid to speak out for you, and was not going to sell you out to highest bidder or were too cowardly to do or say the right thing.
