MPACUK London battle on in our pre-emptive lobbying campaign where we are currently engaging local mosques to petition their local MPs to ensure that the detention without trial time limit is not increased. We recently updated readers of our liaison with a Mosque in Redbridge to educate and more importantly activate the congregation to take action against the proposal – local MPs need to be lobbied to defend our human rights and vote against this draconian law!

Another Jummah, another mosque, another attempt at protecting my brothers and sisters from injustice. As you may know, London MPACers have been working tirelessly in reviving the mosques and making them into the beacons of light that they should be, so it was back to that mosque we met at our branch meeting last week...

So back it was to the mosque we met with 2 weeks ago, to ask them to support the campaign against extending detention without trial. Just as we had agreed, there was the Chairman, waiting after Zuhr to give me the petition. But nothing could have prepared me for the results…

Sir Ian Blair, Commissioner of the Metropolitan police, should resign immediately. In the wake of the tragic shooting of an innocent man, Jean Charles de Menezes, at Stockwell tube station on July 22 2005. A team of police marksmen shot seven dum-dum bullets into the victim’s head on a crowded tube train. Witnesses deny that police identified themselves before firing. Dum-dum bullets are a special type of ammunition that has been deliberately weakened so that when the bullets enter the victim they deform rapidly and create a huge amount of damage to the victim’s internal organs, usually causing multiple organ failure and therefore death in very quick succession.

London MPACers are continuing their quest to empower the Muslim communities to defend themselves in the face of discriminatory legislation. Since 2001, a whole host of draconian laws have been passed by an authoritarian government intent on undermining all of our civil liberties. Whilst Muslims rightly feel targeted by this legislation, the wider public have been drawn into a false sense of security, that these laws are needed to protect everyone from fanatics hell-bent on destroying our way of life and that these laws will only be used on “Islamic Extremists”.

Why has General Musharraf not telephoned Gordon Brown to express his "deep concern" over yesterday's Queen's speech? Or Vladimir Putin or Mahmoud Ahmedinejad? Here is a government unpopular and in trouble over terrorism. Its civil rights lawyers are up in arms. Its leader postpones a general election and summarily arrests anyone he sees as a danger to his state. He butters up the military by promising them more nuclear weapons. He announces changes to the constitution without consultation, imposes central rule over dissident local districts and extends imprisonment without trial.

The result of a painstaking drive to dust off old, ignored archives, a photo exhibition in West Jerusalem is honoring Albanian Muslims who risked their own lives to hide and protect Jews hunted by the Nazis, Jerusalem Post reported on Sunday, November 4.
"Albania was the only country in Europe in which there were more Jews after the war than there had been before the war," American photographer Norman Gershman said at the opening of his exhibition at Yad Vashem, Israel's official Holocaust memorial.

Following the national news can be bad for the blood pressure. According to a press leak, the Institute for Public Policy Research (IPPR) - Labour’s favourite think tank and one which has the ear of power - is to publish a report saying Christmas should be downgraded to improve race relations. In the interests of “evenhandedness”, the report says, and “if we are going to continue as a nation to mark Christmas - it would be very hard to expunge it from our national life, even if we wanted to - then public organisations should mark other religious festivals too”.

When it comes to Iran's nuclear capabilities, whose word would you rather take: that of a Nobel prize-winning head of an international agency specializing in nuclear issues who was proved triumphantly right about Iraq, or that of a bunch of belligerent neocons who make no secret of their desire to whack Iran at the earliest opportunity and who made such a pigs ear of Iraq?

Islamophobia is increasingly on the rise and new anti-terror legislations are frequently being discussed in Parliament. Muslims continue to be belittled and ridiculed and MPACUK continue to struggle. The media continues with their regular uproar, politicians continue playing with Iran. Israel is still abusing Palestinian rights and Iraq is still being bombed. Afghanistan is still crawling with troops and George Bush still thinks he can hear God. What are the Muslims doing?

Shahid Malik says he is deeply disappointed at being detained and searched by airport staff in Washington DC. Is the United States institutionally anti-Muslim or do Muslims just need to accept the fact that in the current climate they are more likely to be searched than other people? Zulfi Bukhari, CEO of the Muslim Public Affairs Committee, and Yasmin Qureshi discuss this pertinent topic.

There is something I need to share. Though it’s not saving the world, or fighting a bulldozer or even politics of any kind. I’ve lost hope on our fellow Muslims today. I don’t believe in them anymore. They don’t keep to their appointments. They lie too much. They mess around with business ethics and every day, becomes a day of disappointment for me. And all I want is just one Muslim, just one, who doesn’t ask but gives, who serves and doesn’t take, who sacrifices and doesn’t gloat. Just that one time, I wish to see see in a Muslim brother’s eyes and know he is for real. He will keep his word.

A prominent national Islamic civil rights and advocacy group today expressed concern about the decision of a student group that is involved in the so-called Islamo-Fascism Awareness Week" to host a Michigan lecture by a representative of a British racist political party. The Washington-based Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) says the group, Young Americans for Freedom (YAF), is hosting a lecture tonight at Michigan State University by British National Party (BNP) Chairman Nick Griffin.

Taking this book on to the Tube, I wondered whether I ought to wrap it in brown paper, or at least replace the jacket with something less controversial: Jeremy Clarkson's latest, perhaps. After all, it is hard to think of any book in recent years that has stirred up more outrage than The Israel Lobby.

His English was fluent, his manner approachable, his schedule set and, as we were later to find out, his knowledge of the local MP undisputable. The adhan called in the background and yet the prayer was not used as an excuse to delay the meeting. Rather, we were hurried into the office (after praying our sunnah) and we got down to business. The man I refer to was not despondent in any sense about the current situation of this Ummah but immediately took warmly to the youth that had approached him.
