Other times it can be the press, media and critics who do not support us and might misreport something or a website that may publish quotes out of context. The worst smear mongering and opposition comes from Zionists and their supporters. When we take a stance against the brutal oppression of the Palestinians by Israel we expect opposition but when those people turn out to be members of our own government supporting state terrorism abroad it is time to expose the lies and smears publicly.

Gordon Brown is being urged by MPs to abandon plans to detain terror suspects without charge for up to 42 days because the proposals are fundamentally flawed. In a blow to the government, which is facing defeat over the plan when MPs vote on the counter-terrorism bill next month, parliament's joint human rights committee criticised ministers. When the threatened new law was first proposed MPACUK were quick to take up the campaign to defend our freedoms against the government's ever more draconian 'anti-terror' laws. Now the vote in Parliament is fast approaching we call on everyone who cares about our rights and freedoms to act now to defend them.

Shrill complaints may go down well in the western media but they don't help Muslim women. We need credible, reasoned argument. A recent article in the New York Times refers to the "Muslim rebel sisters", Ayaan Hirsi Ali and Irshad Manji and aims to compare and contrast their respective campaigns against their "Muslim upbringing".

We have a bad habit in Western secular society of thinking that we know best. And Western feminism often has an equally bad habit of thinking that its ideals are the right ideals for women of all cultures. In our society, the veils and scarves worn by Muslim women are commonly seen as symbols and tools of an oppressive Islamic patriarchy. This sort of establishment thinking makes feminism inaccessible for women of different beliefs, which robs the movement of its global power.
