Palestinians yesterday stopped Israel from destroying the home of two militants by surrounding it with a human shield. In the first incident of its kind, hundreds of neighbours surrounded the home of Mohammed Baroud and climbed on its roof after he received a call from the Israeli army informing him he had 30 minutes to vacate his home before it was destroyed by missiles.

GRIM images of life in the Gaza Strip dominated the opening day of Al-Jazeera's new English language channel as the Gulf state-funded station set out to prove just how different its presentation of world news would be to rivals BBC and CNN. The channel's programmes focused on the Third World. Alongside Palestinian suffering it ran an upbeat take on the Islamic militia fighting for control of Somalia.

In the Telegraph 14th November, John Sentanu, Archbishop of York is quoted as saying that the BBC criticise Christianity more than Islam. He argues that Christians should be more forceful in defending their faith. However, the Archbishop should have chosen his words more carefully, because he appears to be equating Muslims with terrorists:

Muslim leaders joined their Christian counterparts yesterday to launch a powerful attack on politicians and town halls that play down Christmas. They warned that attempts to remove religion from the festival were fuelling Right-wing extremism. A number of town halls have tried to excise references to Christianity from Christmas, in one case by renaming their municipal celebrations "Winterval".

Tony Blair's anti-terror policy is being "submerged" by party political interests, a report says. The Joseph Rowntree Reform Trust said ministers could be accused of "exploiting the politics of fear". And by trying to win "the white working class vote" they risked alienating Muslims who could help defeat terror.

It's
never Israel's fault. I mean come on. Can Israel really be held accountable for
its actions? What? Did you honestly believe they could? You must have realised
that like Hitler and his henchmen, they had their time to kill, rape, massacre,
destroy homes and places of worship and eventually they faced His Justice as
will the Zionists. So the Zionist State PM
Ehud Olmert has said an
army artillery barrage that killed 18 Palestinians in the Gaza Strip was the
result of a "technical failure".

"I don't know," he said in hesitant English. "It's the house where I was born and lived all my life. What can I say?"

Belligerent, ill-conceived interventionism has come to an end. For level-headed Americans it was a good day. The ugly American mark two is dead. Overnight six years of glib European identification of "American" with rightwing fantasism is over.

Yesterday at dawn, the Israeli air force bombed and destroyed my home. I was the target, but instead the attack killed my sister-in-law, Nahla, a widow with eight children in her care. In the same raid Israel's artillery shelled a residential district in the town of Beit Hanoun in the Gaza Strip, leaving 19 dead and 40 injured, many killed in their beds. One family, the Athamnas, lost 16 members in the massacre: the oldest who died, Fatima, was 70; the youngest, Dima, was one; seven were children. The death toll in Beit Hanoun has passed 90 in one week.

There are around 1,600 mosques in Britain. Well over half do not allow women access to worship and hardly any allow women a say on how the mosques are managed and run. Journalist Tazeen Ahmad follows a group of young Muslim women from the Muslim Public Affairs Committee (MPACUK) who are waging a determined campaign to force these mosques to open up. | | Comments closed |
