Whilst the Holocaust was indeed a tragedy of epic proportions it is not the only act of genocide and the fact that HMD is being used as a political football by Zionists is inescapable. There are lessons to be learnt from this dark espisode in history but these lessons are being ignored. The Israelis have tattooed Palestinian civilians a scene reminiscent of Germany in the 1940's.

Will the world remember the Palestinians who were murdered by Israel 70 years from now? Will we see Memorials to the Genocide of the 21st Century? I doubt it because many of those deaths were caused by the descendents of the Holocaust in Europe. They did not learn and I doubt they ever will.

You miss the point of Holocaust Day entirely. HD is not a Jewish Fest to force everyone to take notice of them. They have their own Yom HaShoah. And the lessons they learnt from the Holocaust are entirely their own and different.
Holocaust Day is so named because it marks the point where attitudes towards genocide fundamentally changed in response to what had been done to the Jews and Gypsies in Europe and elsewhere. The Holocaust was of magnitude that dwarfs almost anything else, Rwanda and Kampuchea may be the exceptions. Before the Holocaust there was no concept of the International Human Rights and the idea that nation states have an obligation to provide shelter to refugees. The Holocaust was the catalyst for these and without the Holocaust is highly unlikely that they would have come into being.

The purpose of having Holocaust Day is that we as a society shall remain vigilant against the rise of fascist genocidal states. The lessons for us to learn are why we as nations around the world failed to stand up for the Jews and at least provide them the means to escape for Nazi Germany and elsewhere.

For Jews there is another set of questions, the first of which is how do they ensure that it never happens again to them. Another is to understand why assimilation, conversion and isolation failed as strategies for survival.
