Inayat Bunglawala: Responding to The Channel 4 Dispatches Documentary Print E-mail
Wednesday, 17 January 2007

Inayat BunglawalaLast Monday's edition of the Channel Four documentary programme Dispatches entitled Undercover Mosque was heavily trailed with adverts being placed in several national newspapers to help promote it.

We were told that as part of a 12-month investigation Dispatches had sent an undercover reporter to a number of UK mosques (well alright, I counted four out of a total of over 1,200 UK mosques) "that claim to be dedicated to moderation and dialogue with other faiths" but in reality preach "chilling sermons" and "preach hatred for non-Muslims and for Muslims who do not follow their extreme beliefs". This "message of hatred" was allegedly "influenced by the religious establishment of Saudi Arabia."

Saudi involvement seems to be welcomed when it comes to our gambling and arms industries, but we are told that religion should be a no-no. Now it is certainly true that Saudi Arabia is an influential country and I wrote about Islamic outreach efforts from the Kingdom a couple of weeks ago. But how directly is it involved in British Muslim affairs?

In the firing line - along with others - was London's flagship Islamic Cultural Centre in Regent's Park, whose director, Dr Ahmad al-Dubayan, was, we were told, a Saudi diplomat.

A DVD was shown to be on sale at an independent Muslim bookshop operating in the foyer of the Islamic Cultural Centre in which someone calling himself Shaykh Feiz gave a speech and in one extract mimicked the sound of a pig snorting when he mentioned Jews. A CD containing a speech by someone called Murtaza Khan, a teacher at an Islamic primary school in Ilford, was also shown to be on sale at the same bookshop in which he was recorded as saying:

"We should have a sense of shame. For how long have we seen our mothers, our sisters, and our daughters have to go and uncover themselves before these filthy non-Muslim doctors?"

These are indeed deeply offensive remarks and cannot be lightly excused. I am no expert in law, but if either of the above men receives a visit from the police about inciting racial hatred, I would not be surprised.

However, was it really fair of the Dispatches team to try and use these two odious recordings - and note that we were not informed where the two talks were originally recorded - in an attempt to smear London's largest Islamic centre, whose management have pointed out that they were unaware of the content of either recording which was being sold at the bookshop?

Additionally, the Imams at the Islamic Cultural Centre have traditionally always been from Egypt, not Saudi Arabia, and for the 20 or so years that I have been worshipping there have hardly acquired a reputation for being firebrands. Quite the opposite, in fact.

But Muslim institutions do need to be more vigilant in trying to ensure that their premises are not used to promote such vitriol. If recordings such as the above are now withdrawn from sale then that will be one positive outcome from the C4 documentary.

Also placed under scrutiny were the Markazi Jamiat Ahl-e-Hadith - a national body with its headquarters in Birmingham and the UK Islamic Mission. The charge sheet against them included giving a platform to speakers who praised the concept of jihad, made derogatory remarks about the intelligence of women and expressed extreme hostility towards homosexuals.

You can read their detailed responses to Hardcash Productions, the makers of the C4 documentary, here and here.

I saw a number of emails bouncing around on various Muslim e-groups over the past few days calling on people to ring Channel 4 and request them to halt the broadcast of the Dispatches documentary. Channel 4 were never likely agree to that and probably for the best of reasons. The concerns of those Muslim e-mailers were not entirely without foundation though. They were evidently worried about the impact that the documentary would have on the already poor public perception of British Muslims.

Since the airing of the documentary the Muslim Council of Britain has received many responses via its website of which the following is not untypical:

"After watching the Channel 4 programme tonight, I am very disappointed. I feel betrayed by the Islamic community. I resent being referred to as a kuffur or kaffir or whatever it is you call us. Us, we, the indigenous population of a country which has given you shelter and allowed you to prosper among us. I am angry. I know that you Muslims are an implacable enemy who need to be fought. You are traitorous filth to me now. You are dogs. You are whores and animals. I hate you. When the war comes, I will happily fight against you all until you are driven from Europe.

Following the 7/7 bombings it was always inevitable that Muslim organisations and mosques would be placed under the spotlight. That is not necessarily a bad thing. Documentary makers have an important responsibility though to do their research properly and carefully identify those who actually incite hatred. They must take great care to avoid unfairly stigmatising whole institutions and groups of people.

The Dispatches team may have partly succeeded with the first bit, but I believe they failed quite badly with the second.

For their part, British Muslims also need to take some responsibility and be prepared to take a stand if they hear inappropriate language being used in Islamic centres. Just blaming the media is not enough.

If I was a non-muslim doctor I would feel extremely offended and hurt in the face of these comments but is this the views of the speaker or is this just what vulnerable Muslim women think to themselves in the presence of non-muslim doctors. Do these comments refer to both male and female non-muslim doctors?

The injustice of the channel 4 programme was that it was about showing Muslim in a bad light from the ofset rather than making sure nothing was left to interpretation based on invidividual values and prejudices of which is like .... I think this means this......

Come on now...

If i went into a church or synigogue under cover I could take statements galore, out of context with no problem at all, but would dispatches air it, i guess not, this is just another attack on islam, go on zionist website and you can read the filth that comes out of so called rabbi's, until we have the means to publish to the masses we always be the underdog, simple as that, secondly with religion in the world doesnt belive that they are superior to another, you dont hear priests in church say, well i chose cristianity becasue i felt it was second best, the ingonrant prick who sent this email to mcb, is just that ignorant, just like these women in big brother, the fact that you responded with an article, is just playing in to the game they want you to.

muslims we need our own media, not islam channels or muslim only papers, we need to have something more independant becasue the only publication willing to publish our point of view is the guardian, and gues what, it isnt enough!

If you went undercover into a church or synagogue you would have a hard time finding anything controversial to report. If you went into an Anglican church or a Roman Catholic church you would end up falling asleep and the churchwarden or vicar's wife would probably bring you a nice cup of tea.

Neither can I imagine that you would get very excited listening to the reading of Torah.

My local Anglican church has a creche facility which is used by one or two muslim women, but that's about the only controversial thing you would find there.

What does lack of comments on this post suggests? That Muslim community is not yet ready to reform itself. Why am I not surprised.

Not a bad response, but I would suggest that rather than complain about bias and try to stop criticism, you should make your efforts to stop extremism (if that's what it is) more visible. It is simply not credible to claim that such people and such material do not exist, or have nothing to do with Islam. What you can do is to make it clear what the rest of the Muslims are doing in response. That way, politicians and sympathetic non-Muslims can rally behind those efforts. You need to present a clear focus of action for the political and public support for Muslims to converge around.

The first thing to be done is to make clear how the community responds to extremists. When any moderate Muslim sees or hears such material, who do they report it to, where are the contact addresses? What sanctions do mosque committees apply, and who do they appeal to if local authorities fail to do so? If all else fails within the community, how do they liaise with the outside police? Can you give examples where any of this has happened? (Removing names if necessary.) A whole bunch of Muslims were in the audiences of those preachers or bought those DVDs, and we're surely not saying none of them were moderates. (We know at least one was, the cameraman.) What did all the rest do about it? Tell us their stories.

The second thing you need to do is to be far more open about the controversial parts of Islam. I have seen many complaints that the quotes were taken out of context. You should make this impossible by ensuring that non-Muslims are already aware of the context before they see such material. Have your scriptural counter-arguments to the violent/intolerant mujahideen's claims ready, so that not only can non-Muslims be assured that the Taliban/Wahhabi is a false version, but also prevents radicalisation of disaffected Muslim youth who see Jihad as the path of deeper piety. At the moment the Jihadis quote chapter and verse and scholars both ancient and modern and they look very credible, while many moderates preach this vague hippy peace message with no technical or historical justification provided, which just makes it look like lying - to non-Muslims and young Muslims both.

You could start with online resources to address the controversial points - jihaad, nasikh/mansukh, slavery, dhimma, devshirme, the caliphate, forced conversion, equality for women, witnessing in court, Pakistan's interpretation of Hudood, apostasy, and so on. Islam-QA and al Qaeda gives us the Wahhabi version, give us your moderate counter to it, and explain where the hardliners have got it wrong. You can't hide this stuff for much longer, so you need to answer it, to defeat it utterly. Outsiders cannot tell which of you is the true Islam. Show them.

Well the problem is not with the muslims, we have accepted the final message including Jesus the son of Mary (may gods blessing be up on him). But how should one treat Right wing Christians whom pour millions and millions of pounds in the hands of the children of those people who supported the annihilation of Christ and enjoy boming, abusing, killing and burning "MOSLEMS" INNNNOCENT or not. fOR THOSE Hypocites and war mongers guess what? its all going to happen the way u expect but with a twist. MuslimS are fully aware of the events of the end of times, we were told by our beloved prophet that at the end of time Christian rule will dominate the world and muslims will be huge in numbers but will be viewed and treated like the foams in the sea ( worthless foam whom no one cares nor has any significance). He has also told us that nations will compete with each other building "TALL BUILDINGS", KILLING WOULD INCREASE MANY FOLDS (WERE THE KILLER WOULD NOT KNOW WHY HE HAD KILLED AND THE VICTIM IN THE GRAVE WOULD NOT KNOW WHY HE WAS KILLED), WARS WOULD SPREAD, UNTILL NO ARAB HOUSE HOLD WILL BE SPARED, ENEMY'S WOULD FIGHT FROM THE SEA PORTS (I.E WITHOUT REACHING THE BATTLE FIELD PHYSICALLY ON FOOT), TIME WILL PASS QUICKLY, TRAVELING OF DAYS JOURNEY WOULD BE DONE IN HOURS,ONE WOULD HEAR ANOTHERS VOICE FROM ONE COUNTRY TO ANOTHER,PEOPLE WOULD START COMMUNICATING WITH THE FISHES IN THE SEA (DOLPHINS ETC), WOMEN WOULD OUT NUMBER MEN IN TERMS OF COUNT, DIVORCE RATE OF NATIONS WILL INCEASE,PEOPLE WILL "START" LIVING LONGER, CRITICISM IN GENERAL WOULD INCREASE AND MANY MORE. Go and read what the LAST PROPHET MUHAMMED(PEACE BE UP ON HIM)HAS SAID ABOUT HIS BROTHER (BROTHERS IN PROPHETHOOD) JESUS AND ABOUT THE COMMING OF THE HOUR (I.E ANTI CHRIST, GOG MAGOG,WORLD CORRUPTION AND MORE) THEN I THINK U SHOULD SPEAK!!!!

To all brothers and sisters who feel that the programme was a conspiracy against Islam and Muslims, I say this was a favour to British Muslims by Channel 4. By doing what Muslims themselves should have done ages ago, they have provided us with an opportunity to start challenging the bigotry and racist/offensive remarks that are part of almost all Khutbas and "speical teaching sessions" around the country's mosques. If we do not condmen this behaviour and control our Imams, the time will come very soon when the government will take away the privilidges that Muslims enjoy in this country. Believe it or not, we have more freedom to practice our religion (the way we want, privately and publicly) in Britain than we have in Saudi Arabia, Pakistan or any other European country). So, lets be sensible and not just side with a Muslim doing something wrong because they are Muslims! Its better for us to correct them and retain our priviledges, rather than let the situation get out of hand and the government agencies force any such correction upon us.
Just because the Sufi Council and Dr Ghayasuddin Siddiqui condemn such actions, does not mean they are neo-cons. Remember, during the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan, the same Mullahs were best buddies with the Americans to ward off the communist threat, using their money and weapons to fight.
Just be sensible and put the country first, co-religionists second!
