So says the Daily Express, who must have been kicking themselves that they got the story a full day after the Telegraph. No matter, they still put it on their front page. Islamic law does indeed exist in many forms in this country. I'm married under it, have a bank account arranged under its principles, and I eat meat slaughtered according to it. Panic stations everybody. Now. The Express speaks of local religious 'courts' sitting and giving rulings on civil matters (the reports mention a Somali court ruling on a criminal matter, but it sounded like it had no relationship with shariah). When people go through other forms of arbitration rather than take legal action, it's called settling out of court. When Muslims do it, it's called a two-tier legal system that is threatening the very fabric of our society. I have to say that I've never actually heard of such courts sitting in the official form that these reports indicate. I have though heard of imams being called in to deal with family disputes, divorces etc and giving an opinion which is then taken on board. If both parties are happy with that, then I can't see what the problem is. The newspaper articles stemmed from a BBC Radio Four's Law in Action programme. That episode also mentioned Jewish law courts. Astoundingly, the Express and Telegraph omitted to mention that, concentrating on the Muslim angle - anyone still think they don't have an agenda? The Telegraph piece was written by Joshua Rozenberg, not exactly someone unfamiliar with Judaism to pass over any mention of it so easily. His wife, Melanie Phillips, would have to write another book, Londonrael. Source: osamasaeed.org Readers have left 9 comments.

This might surprise you but so do the christians. They take their family and or other problems/disputes to their clergy and seek advice and or ask for arbitration. One of the main features is their confessional box, where they confess. Many Christian friends that I have, have their elderly going to their clergy for all kinds of arbitration and family problems. So what is the big deal? My friends have been stopped in the street and on ocassions have been asked by the priests "how certain matters have progressed"?
How dare the Muslims seek arbitration other than the flawed system or the miscarriage of justice? Just attack Muslims for everything. This has been evident.

Perhaps it might have more to do with the fact that not so long ago a group of Muslims went to the Government asking for Shariah law to be used for criminal cases.
In fact, both articles were focusing on Sharia courts for criminal cases; something that Jewish courts do not deal with and do not want to deal with. That is the big difference, and a difference that MPACUK is well aware of. Of course, it doesn't suit MPACUK to tell its readers this, just as it doesn't suit MPACUK to publish this comment.

Thinker, you really need to start thinking???? If you didn’t notice this is Great Britain, a democratic country, where individuals and groups have the right to request/lobby what they like from the government, this however dose not mean there request will be granted. If a group of Muslims want to request or lobby for Shariah law they have every right to do so.On a separate note, I believe MPAC is more impartial in its reporting and debating then any of those Neo-Zio-Fascist so called main stream news papers/channels, therefore can you stop winging about MPAC not publishing your article with every one you write as you just make your self sound like an a**

I didn't suggest that Muslims were not allowed to ask for Islamic law to be applied to criminal cases. However, that is what the articles were discussing.
Therefore, it is not valid to compare that to Jewish courts.

The "Democratic" European countries brag day and night of their democracy and human rights and reilgioud freedom. All this is rubbish. Europe should learn democracy from Islam and Muslim state when it was in power for over 700 years. Under the Islamic state from the 7th century until this day, Christians and jews and Hindus etc. have their own religious courts. These non-Muslim courts acted freely without any interference from the Muslim state or the Muslim society. This islamophopia which overwhelms Europe is very dangerous. Therefore, Europe! Wake up and face the reality, Islam is here to stay no matter what you will do.

Dear Thinker
You smudge the issue. A racist rant in a newspaper because some Muslims (how many were they) asked the Government for Sharia. What’s the big deal? The outrage seems to be because it is “separate” from the law of the land. So your argument about Jews not wanting criminal cases to be judged by Jewish law is a red herring. The Jews practice a separate law from that currently used in the land. According to the tone of that article, the alarming thing is that some want to be different from the rest of us. (Which is what the article is alluding too). Whether they want criminal or some other type of separate law is irrelevant. You are using an alternative law! What MPAC seem to be asking validly, is why are Muslim attacked for this when Jews are not (am I right in saying the owner of the Express is a Jewish supporter of Israel?. As a non Muslim I happy to have many different laws operating just like we did under the Romans, and still do around the world for various minority communities.) So stop fudging the issue. You’re a Zionist, a racist and worse - You’re trying to hide it.

Dear Dr Reid,
You were doing so well up until that last line. Then you spoilt it all. There is nothing wrong with having arbitration under a different system of law. I never suggested that there was. The article itself may have been alarmist, but MPACUK's outcry is equally so. All I did was to point out the reason why the Express and the Telegraph may be pouncing on Muslim courts and not Jewish ones. If that makes you consider me "a Zionsist, a racist and worse"; then you should think long and hard about your definitions.

Just another pathetic reason to get at Muslims. Personally I would not object to a bit of Shariah Law being used in our own Courts. We would certainly be able to reduce the prison population if we sliced off a few hands instead. It would also save some of our taxes which could be spent on caring for our old people and better hospital facilities for those who abide by the law.
I can well imagine such an article being written by Joshua Rozenberg. It is of a similar standard to his wife's writing in her book Londonistan. The biggest pile of garbage and racist writing I have ever read.
