A Recipe for Peace Print E-mail
Monday, 15 May 2006
A Recipe for Peace (www.arecipeforpeace.com) was founded in 2003 by two former diplomat's daughters who grew up seeing various races and religions dine peacefully together at their parent's tables.  The two founders hope that by funding pairs of young people from traditionally hostile cultures to learn to cook together, this will foster greater understanding and concord between these cultures.  They are also both from the financial industry and feel that giving young people strong vocational skills may also prevent them from feeling disenfranchised and becoming susceptible to more radical and anti-social political rhetoric.

To this end, they have now raised sufficient money to fund the first pair of students and they would like to award these scholarships to one Jewish and one Muslim student.  They have raised this money by working as private chefs and donating their fees, and by writing a cookbook Dining with Dictators which is currently available through Amazon.co.uk.  The scholarships are for one year and include: full tuition and expenses for the Level 1 chefs qualification at the Kensington and Chelsea college in London , additional tuition from culinary experts in each student's individual culinary heritage and possibly a commis chef internship at a restaurant in London (these are currently under negotiation).  Accommodation and board are also being arranged.
In light of the attacks on the London transport system last year, the ARFP team decided that instead of going farther afield for the first two students, they would seek to fund two students from the U.K. and it's with this search that we would very much appreciate your guidance and assistance.
ARFP are ideally looking for someone between 16 and 25 years old (either gender), who has an interest in cooking and in learning about the Jewish culinary heritage and who would be willing to spend a year working with a Jewish counterpart as part of this fledgling peace effort.
The students need to be matriculated by mid-June 2006 so there is some urgency in our search.  We would like the applicants to write a maximum of 400 words describing their interest in cooking, what cultural cooking experience they've had (e.g. grew up learning Grandmother's recipes) and why they feel they are a good candidate to represent this unique grass-roots peace effort.  They can send their applications to arecipeforpeace@yahoo.com.  All responses will be considered.  The applications process will close on June 9th, 2006.

Oh GOD! Yet another attempted at a vain peace. When will you people realise that peace can never be achieved as long as money can be made out of war.

Do you honestly think that cooking and learning each other cultures can help bring a gap towards peace? Because if you do you’re seriously mistaken. Religion is not the factor behind these hostilities Money is.

What a complete waste of time.

Not another 'peace' initiative! At a wider level, all this talk about 'peace' is really a formula for oppression. Michael Schueur in his earlier book about Osama Bin Laden made a comparison between the man and some of America's earliest American folk heroes - men like Thomas Jefferson who, like Bin Laden, was seen as a revolutionary terrorist by the British. Jefferson, like Bin Laden, made the case that the time for talk and dialogue was long past - he and other had long petitioned the British and their petitions had been answered by more violence and repression - and if the America was to gain freedom and independence, it had to be done through force. Bin Laden believes in exactly the same values. He, like Jefferson, believes that the time for petitions and dialogue is now long past. Unfortunately, those who carry on talking about 'peace' in these situations are either blind to what is happening or want the status quo to continue. 'Peace' be damned. If there is no justice, then one should expect only violence.

We're deeply saddened by both of these comments. As financiers, politics is exactly what we were trying to avoid by offering these scholarships. All we are trying to do is offer two young people a year's tuition and training, and then a chance at a career in cookery. If violence and greed are all you see in the current state of the world, then you are truly both hopeless and we're sorry for both of you. May God grant you whatever form of peace you hope to find with your very cynical outlooks of the world.
