Trevor Phillips, the head of the Commission for Racial Equality (CRE) has stated that the debate on the issue of the niqab could lead to rioting in areas with a large Muslim population such as Burnley, Oldham and Bradford. Mr Phillips is right to raise the very possible danger of a debate that up until now though shrill and exaggerated in nature turning into something more sinister.
The issues of integration, racial and religious attitudes are important and certainly should be discussed but with respect. Unfortunately what could be an opportunity to allay fears of Muslims and non-Muslims alike is being squandered largely through the efforts of more extreme elements on both sides of the debate. MPACUK have been all too aware of the social problems faced by Muslim communities because we have witnessed them first hand. Areas of a town become known as “Muslim areas” and “non-Muslim areas”. The northern mill towns are especially divided along such lines. The Muslim areas tend to have populations with lower educational attainment, worse health statistics, higher unemployment and crime. This is not a new issue but the timing of the debate occurs when many Muslims feel besieged by criticism from non-Muslims on a host of issues. The subtext of this barrage is that Muslims are not to be trusted and that they don’t belong “here”. Lack of social interaction with the non-Muslim population breeds misunderstanding leading to a cycle mistrust and resentment that reinforces itself. This is a perfect breeding ground for two groups; the elements on the far-right such as the BNP and radical isolationists, two sides of the same coin. The BNP have long since changed their policy of targeting all non-whites to specifically targeting Muslims. The majority of ordinary people in the middle want to get on with their lives without confrontation or some part in an epic clash of civilisations. They want to live in areas that are crime free, with good schools for their children, with decent housing, good job opportunities and friendly neighbours. These aspirations are not specific to one group. Everyone has them but this is hardly ever enunciated in this increasingly shrill debate about Islam, Muslims and integration and everything our country holds dear. The increasingly more desperate stories about Muslim cab drivers, policeman and dairy owners in the tabloids in particular, leave little room for rational consideration that this debate is not necessarily being conducted by two implacably opposed camps, that there may well be a spectrum of opinion within non-Muslims and Muslims. They are not homogenous blocks hell bent on a clash. One of the best things about living in a liberal democracy is that there is room for dissent, that disagreements can be aired without harming your opponent and the merits of an argument can be considered. The problem is we aren’t having a rational debate about values, customs, tradition or respect. We are having a series of increasingly irrational arguments about specific incidents. These incidents are being highlighted by members from both camps as proof of incompatibility and yes there is much mischief making going on by people who frankly should know better. Recently the National Union of Journalists (NUJ) took action to prevent the publication of an article in the Daily Star called “Daily Fatwa” which purported to show how the paper would “look” under sharia law. This article would have been an attempt to do nothing other than raise the temperature of a debate that is already too hot. The Daily Star is owned by pornographer Richard Desmond A.K.A “Dirty Des”. Unfortunately the Daily Star is not the only paper seemingly determined to cause offence. The Sun has been comparing women who wear the niqab with Darth Vader and deliberately conflating the wearing of the garment with proof of extremism. It recently sent a “page 3 girl” to walk around in a niqab and have pictures taken with her together with such startling observations such as “I got stared at”. It would be interesting to know what Anila Begg, the Sun’s token Muslim female columnist, makes of this stunt. Despite such odious provocation, mainstream Muslims should respond in a dignified manner and not follow the far-right onto the streets and into the gutter. Show the critics that we are law abiding, god fearing people. That we value the notions of family, charity, knowledge and faith. Show that we actually have much in common with non-Muslims, particularly the members of the other Abrahamic faiths, that devout does not equate with extremist and that we are attempting integrate. Instead of ignoring the message that Trevor Phillips has highlighted, Muslims should take his warning as wake up call. Muslims should advocate our views in a calm and reasoned manner. We live in trying times but we are here to stay and so we must look to the future. Readers have left 10 comments.

isnt philips role part of the home office brief?
why should we expect any independence from a man who is so handsomely rewarded for being a lapdog? surely it was for philips to point out what you do in this article , so the question is why didnt he?

One must not forget it was the same Trevor Phillips who first raised the issue of the "Muslim ghettos" and warned of "sleep walking in to ghettos" a term which gave David Davis inspriation have a go at Muslim "sleep walking in to appartheid".
One must remember Trevor Phillips like Phil Woolas work for ruth Kelly and have converging agendas. Mr TP fired the initial salvo that led to the appointment of Dara Singh to head Commission on Integration and Cohesion. It's all very nice of him to play good cop now. Beware wolf in sheep's clothing.

Here is my response to Trevor Phillips' article in the Sunday Times:
"A policeman found the skirt of a woman walking in the street annoying so he ordered her to take off the skirt, thereupon a mob emboldened by his actions pounced on the woman and raped her one after the other". Is the policeman to share in any of the blame of that rape. According to "referee Trev" the answer is a resounding no! Then when the woman's husband and children kicks up a fuss, he is told, in the most polite of accents "your are being overly defensive my dear" Well done Trevor! “Jack Straw did the right thing and Muslim leaders are overly defensive” ?...To be a referee one must be impartial which is something you have lost a long time ago, perhaps it is to do with your marriage to someone who may be anti-Muslim...why don't we have a "clam debate" about that?

Doh! I typed out a really long message and then it disappeared on me.
I basically wanted to say that Trevor Philips cannot be trusted - he has a history of stoking up racial tensions and has no credibility in the Black community. Ken Livingstone accused him of 'pandering to the right' recently and said that he would soon be joining the BNP! Phillips also said that we should have the 'freedom to offend each other' after the Danish cartoons were printed - hardly someone who is a champion of equality when he cannot distinguish between 'freedom of speech' and dangerous, racist slurs against an already persecuted group of people. Trevor Phillips is by no means impartial - he is employed by the government and so basically he is Tony Blair's lackey. Do not trust this man - he is firmly part of the establishment. About the article: I really don't think that Muslims should be bending backwards to prove themselves as 'law-abiding' or whatever. They have done nothing wrong and should never lose sight of this. It is entirely the wealthy owners of the gutter press and the blood-soaked warmongering politicians who are to blame here. We all know that they are the real extremists and it comes as no surprise that the hate-filled rhetoric towards Muslims has soared in recent weeks, just as we are told that a staggering 655,000 innocents have been slaughtered in Iraq and also just as their so-called 'foreign policy' is unravelling at an extremely rapid rate. Don't ever forget that you have nothing to apologise for - and always remember that you have many many friends from every community in the UK. United we stand, divided we fall!

well i think this government or the BNP cant do anything to us Muslims. Muslims hold the rope of Allah which is the Quran and Sunnah and we will defeat the enemy of Islam like khalid bin waleed did. He quoted: 'we love death as the kufaar love life'.

"They have done nothing wrong and should never lose sight of this." Are you retarded? Do you speak for all us Muslims? Was it not our brothers who blew up innocent people in London 7/7? "that a staggering 655,000 innocents have been slaughtered in Iraq" That figure is interpolated from a small survey...IT IS NOT A FACT, it is an estimate, but how many Muslims have killed (and continue to kill) Muslims in Iraq?

MC: I agree with you. You just have to read the BLINK to see what they think of him. My one of my Black friend who know TP has very very low opnion of him.
I was watching some Malcolm X clips on YOUTUBE and he was talking about "House niggers and Field niggers" and for some strange reason, it kept reminding me of Trevor Phillips, Condi Rice and Colin Powell. Strange mnnn. I wonder what category Mr Shabbaz would have put them in?

Like all Blairites, Trevor Phillips is fearmongering. He makes it seem as though the muslims will riot when in reality it is muslims who are in fear of violence from the racism stoked up by the Blairites.
Again and again the Blairites criticise and accuse muslims but try and make it seem as though they're trying to help. The best way they could help is to stop going on about muslims 24/7 and just let them get on with their lives.

'we love death as the kufaar love life'...gee whiz, what an inspiring quote. Perhaps that goes some way in explaining the alleged 655,000 dead in Iraq.
