Mosque: The Islamic Institution Which Fails To Defend The Ummah Print E-mail
Thursday, 21 September 2006

Our Mosques have become nothing more then temples for the glorification of the committees. The very bastions of our faith turned into prisons without bars and without gaolers but none the less we find ourselves confined in a space of our own mind. The Mosques generously funded by the community and diligently gathered by ‘well intentioned’ men have given the ummah a place of worship, and turned them into a nothing more the empty prayer halls glorifying the cult of the ritual. And we, by doing nothing have endorsed the status quo.

‘Well intentioned’ men, well for the benefit of the doubt lets say that’s true, ‘Well intentioned men, who only think of the betterment of the Ummah, whose only desire is to create an institution that preserves the essence of their cultural and religious identify. A place where the community can gather, talk and discuss important events of the day and create a momentum where social improvement can be actioned.

The founding fathers ensured that their clan could only inherit the powerful structures that the Muslim public generously donated to. A place which will not allow another nationality, whether that is Asian, Arab, African or white European to share in the running and decision making of the mosques, A place that excludes women, A place where the Khutba is delivered solely in Gujarati, Bengali, or Urdu, for the benefits of an older generation who need a cultural comfort blanket, to help them adjust to 40 years of living in this country! They force the entire congregation, (including most of those who have no understanding of what is being said) to listen and adhere to rules they have no understanding off. And we still call these people well intentioned!

Yes these men who raised the money are considered well intentioned, but the question remains what were their intentions? Was it to create racially pure areas where ‘their’ tribe of Muslims can pray and preserve their ‘cultural customs?’ Or was it for the benefit of Allah and the best intentions of the religion and its adherents. Was the cultural baggage so heavy that when they left office (usually in a coffin), they past on the worst practices and resistance to change to their beneficiaries. Who in like continued to run a prison service interpretation of Islam. Outwardly showing the best intentions and yet demonstrating little that would warrant the respect they were granted.

In times of trouble, a community looks to its hubs, its natural defence system, in the case of the UK, Parliament, the Police, Religious institutions, Security Services and the free media. In the case of minorities and Immigrants they would expect that role to be supplemented by community groups, and religious institutions. Unfortunately in this dark time the Mosques have been exposed as temples dedicated to worshiping the committees.

MPAC run on just over £800 of regular donors a month and with that money fight the Zionist and Islamophobes, to protect our rights over here and the lives of our brothers elsewhere, yet while MPAC struggle on a two penny defence system, the mosques committee of the Balfour Rd Mosque famous for its racist constitution that only allows Gujuraties from one village to run for office, doesn’t allow women to pray in their sacred hall and infamously supported Tory candidates who were sympathetic to the extreme BJP at election time. Go on the charity commission’s website and you will realise that this mosque sits on a stash of cash over £230k with Assets of over £1.1million.

I wonder what the best intentions are off the current committee when the Kashmir earthquake killed over 100,000 people. I wonder what the best intentions of the committee were when Lebanon was flattened, I wonder what the intentions of the committee were when they watch young Palestinian children get there eyes blown out by Israeli snipers, or what their intentions are in helping the burn and rape victims in Gujarat. They sit like Dickensian scrooges counting their money and increasing their wealth all the while abusing the name of a religious institution as to ensure that they are seen as venerated elders. I wonder what their intentions were when the police foiled an alleged terror plot, and the Muslim community needed paid media personnel to deflect the stigma and focus on foreign policy? I wonder what their best intentions are when Muslim sisters need support groups to protect their dignity and their Islamic rights. Ask them to involve themselves in setting up a maths and comprehension supplementary school for all kids regardless of faith to help poverty stricken communities and see if their intentions are true. What have they done to ensure that Muslims are empowered to make sure that their representatives in Parliament are empowered to fight for the rights of Palestine, fight for the rights of Iraq, Lebanon, Kashmir, Chechnya, Darfur, etc. they have done nothing because their intentions were not to do anything and they have achieved that their goal.

They haven’t built mosques they have built temples and we have prayed at the altar of the money god for to long. While the high priest enshrines the committees right to pacify the maddening crowds with promises and rituals ensuring a paradise in the hereafter.

I think this article is good and raises the problems with our mosques well. But the question arises then: Where do we go from here? Or how do we change? I would just like to suggest to the younger generation that we approach this carefully and with sure steps and not start a frantic revolution against our parent’s generation. I think that could end us all in a worse situation.
No matter how big mosques can get in Britain, they have still for decades remained a very passive institution here, sometimes just functioning as little more than a large prayer hall. But that is how people have become used to them and probably the reason why they have survived without scrutiny for so long. As soon as we begin to change that and make the mosque what it historically has been and should be, that is, an integral part of Muslim life and community, it will gain a much louder voice in the British consciousness. It will begin to attract more attention, more scrutiny and perhaps even accountability for every one of its attendee’s behaviour. This attention is something I think we should expect if things change and be prepared to deal with.
As for most of our older generation, I still think we should allow them to retire and move on with dignity, even though they may be a little wrong in what they do. (Of course not the outright fraudsters, they should be brought to justice.) But many of our elders come from a world where survival was the only concern and may know more about it than we do.

You MPAC people are going off your heads attacking mosques and that looking for faults at muslims and mosques. You people aint done nothing for the Muslim Ummah accept causing fitnah every now and then and disunity amongst muslims. Have you people managed to stop all the atrocities on the muslims? Have you done anything yet apart from pointing fingers at others? There are so many branches in the deen ok you people are trying to do one thing fight the zionists which is good but dont point fingers at others. The Masajids are the house of Allah and prayer is in fact the most important aspect in a muslim so how dare you attack mosques saying they have not done enough. In fact all the mosques out there regardless of what sect they belong to are doing a fundemental duty of establishing prayers with the grace of Allah. How do you expect to get the help of Allah by attacking the very mosques that you go to do your prayers in. Those brothers that have devoted their lives to the mosque, Allah reward them intensely for their duties. You MPAC people do what you have to do but stop pointing at religious institutions, so dumb.

Any one reading MPAC's reports would think that the Masjids are occupied by Zionists. Muslims, sisters in particular, should lead the charge of Jihad against the Masjid elders.

Well I am one that do not agree with many many Muslims but I wil NOT encourage a Jihad leading to conflict against me or them for disagreeing even on religious doctrine.

"I agree to disagree". Thats my policy with people and Muslims in particular

MPAC we urge you to stop your obsession with Muslim Masjids and if you can not work with them then DO NOT work against them.

Do not turn Masjids into battlefields and bring Islam and Muslims into disrepute the same religion/faith and faithfuls you strive to preserve and defend, so you keep telling us.

OR MAY BE THAT IS NOT YOUR AGENDA?

WAtch this space! beacuse I will

The above article about the (UK) masjids is well argued and based on observation and experience of many, probably the majority of mosques throughout the UK. Academic research also backs up the statements made, as would a good search of the mosques charitable status and constitutions - something that can be done by anybody.

It is clear that the article is written by someone who would like to see the reform and success of the mosques, not their destruction - someone who would like them to be meaningful centres of Muslim communities, not just prayer clubs for a few men of some ethnic group or other.

Of course there are honourable exceptions. The exceptions are the mosques that are functioning as mosques were intended to function, from the time of the Prophet Muhammad, sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam.

The criticisms of mosques and mosque committees in the article are justified. (One point though - all mosques committees are not "old"!) Not only are the criticisms justified, but they are also well written and well -balanced.

Well mannered and PRIVATE efforts to persuade the mosque committees to improve their performance and that of our mosques, has fallen on deaf ears for far too long. The Ummah is in a mess. The (UK) mosques are doing very little indeed to address any of the major issues, or indeed many of their responsibilities, apart from salat at salat times appealing to a few traditionally devout elderly men..

Contrary to sunnah, women are generally denied access and Muslims of other ethnicities are often treated at best by ignorance and at worst by hostility - unless it happens to be a white male who appears to be of a certain "class" in which case the devout brothers will be falling over each other to give him a sincere and ongoing welcome!

If the mosques committees are looking to their dignity, they and their supporters should address the issues well presented in the article, and not fall to small-minded threats, insults and other defensive responses.

When I see MPAC on dispatchers, one word comes to mind mischievous. They choose the worst way to get there point across.

Asghar the way you reacted to the Woman in Blackburn 'Awful'. You helping to get muslim women's voices to be heard when you are shouting over them.

Everywhere MPAC goes why is that they only stir up trouble, why is it always a negative contribution to the islamic soicety.

What is Asghar's obssesion with Blackburn?
