Islam Through The Eyes of the Western media Print E-mail
Wednesday, 03 May 2006

By Ahmad Ali Nurdin

IT WAS through the media that many people in the West learnt about events such as Ayatollah Khomeini's condemnation of novelist Salman Rushdie to death for blasphemy, Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi's posturing and promotion of a Third World revolution, the Sept 11 terrorist attacks and the Bali bombings.

Much of what people in the West learn about Islam is from the news, so how the media portrays Islam is an important factor in how they understand Islam.

All around the world, the Western media stimulates, corrupts, influences, shapes and challenges Muslims.
Television, radio, the Internet and newspapers are inundated with negative images of Muslims, who are routinely portrayed as being fundamentalist, conservative, extremist, uncivilised or despotic.

Much of this stereotyping comes from ignorance, but the media is also owned by profit-seeking organisations which often seek to create a false image of reality, by presenting Islam as a menace or a threat to the West.
Take the great misconception in the media about jihad, which literally means a struggle in the name of God or holy war.

Because the ideas of war and violence are now linked to the Islamic religion by the media, it often misuses jihad to mean a holy war in which Muslims unreasonably kill non-believers.

But jihad actually means what a Muslim does for the sake of God.

So, a student striving for top grades, individuals pursuing equality and justice for all people, the honouring of parents, and even a mother giving birth to a child, can all be considered jihad.

Rarely, however, do you see this definition used in Western reports.

Another major topic which is often misinterpreted by the Western media concerns the rights of women in Islam.
If the media is to be believed, Islam is a male-dominated religion in which Muslim men have complete authority over all groups.

By seeking out what captures headlines, the media all too often confirms stereotypes and fears of extremism and terrorism. The result is that Islam is defined negatively today as radically at odds with the West, establishing a framework which limits knowledge of the religion.

Prejudice and antagonism towards Islam and Muslims are embedded deeply in the psyche of mainstream Western societies. So long as this framework stands, Islam, as a vital experience for Muslims, cannot be known.

It is not only the hyberbolic language of Western media that depicts Muslims as fundamentalist and extremist, but its pictures as well.

For example, in the Oct 4 issue of Time magazine, Muslim soldiers are shown performing prayers while carrying guns, with a caption that says: 'Guns and prayer go together in the fundamentalist battle.'
The message is clear in the minds of readers.

Not without foundation then, Muslims perceive the Western media as being hostile, and a negative influence.

But why does the Western media persist in such prejudice concerning Islam?

This is an important question for Muslims to consider, if misinformation and misunderstanding are to be eliminated. Is the media anti-Islam, or purely news-oriented?

Historian Robert Darnton once observed this piece of graffiti on the wall of a New York Times men's room: 'All the news that fits we print.' In other words, stories fight for limited newspaper space.

Presumably, the commercial motive is why the media tends to blow up stories about Islam.

Islam is the fastest-growing religion in the West, and it suffers antagonism from every direction. Controversial stories about Muslims attract readers, Muslims and non-Muslims.

So, when the World Trade Center was attacked in 2001, blaming Islamic terrorism made an already huge story even more so.

Another influence in the negative portrayal of Islam is politics. Although many United States officials deny a connection between how the media portrays Islam and foreign policy, fear of Islam in the US and other Western countries could play into the hands of the powers that be.

The fear, which is unjustified, appears rational given that only selective facts are available to the public.

Muslims should not assume that the Western media carries negative images of Islam because Westerners hate Islam.

The media is interested in selling controversial news and the situation is worsened by the lack of understanding of individual reporters.

Many Muslim leaders also contribute to the bad image by condemning loudly Western culture, politics and ideology.

How then to reach a compromise and increase understanding between Muslims and the Western media?

First, the media needs to be more balanced, and avoid falling into traps like using loaded words such as 'fundamentalism'. It could try 'revivalist' or a more neutral term.

Second, Muslims need more visibility in the Western media to project their point of view and counter the exotic and alien image of Islam that some media practitioners have.

Instead of reacting emotionally and seeing the Western media as the enemy, Muslims could provide reporters with more information.

If children could be taught a basic knowledge of Islam in schools, they will not grow up ignorant, breeding fear and prejudice.

Western-educated Islamic groups and communities could bridge the gap to explain the diversity of Islamic traditions, old and new.

Conversely, Western values like democracy need to be explained in Muslim schools, so that the West is not stereotyped as only offering free sex and violence.

To sum up, because the media is such a major source of information for the public about Islam in the West, the participation of Muslims in it would have a positive effect.

The Western media should also learn the truth about Islam, so that it can report it objectively.

Acceptance will come when readers are educated properly.

There was never any issue between the West and islam Muslims before the Zionists got hold of our media and churches.

from then on we had the Crusades up to the present false flag terrorism of 9/11 and 7/7.

The West is fundamentally Christian, and Muslims are fundamentally the closest to Christians as you can get, in fact the Koran states that the closest friends Muslims have are those who follow Christ Isa.

Zionists pagans have been hard at work for centuries to destroy the mutual bond of Muslims and Christians in order for 'them' to prosper.

So far they have been successful, but the Most High has a plan and the wicked evil ones will surely fail.

When Stuart says 'Zionist pagans have been hard at work for centuries', he is beating around the bush.

Zionism only came into existence in the late 19th century.

If he means Jews, he should say so.

How are the Jews supposed to be responsible for the crusades, of which they were the first victims?

Muslims must decide whether they want to ally with people like Stuart. In the end it will do nothing but discredit them.

Rupert Murdock (Zionist) owns nearly all the western media, tv and newspapers. Not just in the west but in asia too. So its not suprised to see why Islam is protrayed in this negative light then.

Bottomline muslims, unless we have a Strategy in place, to overcome the Rheortic and Hatred the MEDIA breeds against the MUSLIMS, Islamaphobhia is here for good.

Most Non-Muslims by large, believe , blindly what their Media tells them especially in the UK.

Our biggest enemy is the Media agenda, and those who are driving it .

(Case-Study Problem)

Media exploits vulnerable minds.
Media filters hates against Muslims,
Most Non-muslim by large largely influenced by the Media.

Potential Solutions :

1.More Muslims working in the Media.
2.Educate the Non muslims about Islam via print Media, Public Seminars etc.
3.Educate the Non-Muslims via Media 4.Case studies to show how the Media reflects propaganda against Islam.
5. Identify Key Figures and channels, who are largely sourcing propaganda and reveal it to the public mainstream.
6. Muslim Academics Should WRITE BOOKS, Newspaper articles against sources which conduct propaganda against Islam.
7. Boycott of all those Print Papers, which source out Propaganda against Islam.
8. Challenge the Management Authorities of those Media Organistions to explain and clarify their position.

Blaming the media fo rthe wrong portrayal for muslims around the world is ridiculous.
Here is a report:

In the Indonesian city of Bogor in West Java on April 23rd, a Muslim mob of about 200 and a crowd of supporters from surrounding areas shut down a Sunday morning service at the Gunungputri house complex. With hundreds of pleased onlookers standing by, the church was evacuated and emptied of its contents. The protesting demonstrators insisted that illegal religious activities were taking place in the house because nearby neighbors had never submitted a recommendation allowing Christian gatherings there. The owner of the house finally gave in to the mob’s demand to stop holding Sunday services. A few policemen showed up on the scene as women from the congregation cried while their church was officially closed.

Still not satisfied, the Muslim mob marched to a Christian house being “misused” as a church, which also served as a store. However, when the crowd arrived, the house?which was regularly used as a Sunday service meeting place?had already been locked by its owner. Fearing that the mob would shut the church down by force, members of the congregation left the church to avoid any conflict or destruction. Unable to enact another church closure, the mob disbanded, but only after they warned security forces that they would return if the Christians continued holding services at the house-store. The Muslims demanded that the local government strictly enforce a church establishment law against Christians, requiring a minimum amount of members and community support. This makes it difficult for many small churches to survive, especially in predominantly Muslim or rural regions. Even though religious freedom is “guaranteed” in Indonesia’s constitution, dozens of churches have been closed in the past several months.

If the media read things like this about and by Islam ... no wonder they think what they do. Couldn't have done it better for them could you.

It would not be difficult to put together the names of a very sizeable number of Jewish subjects or citizens of the Islamic area who have attained to high rank, to power, to great financial influence, to significant and recognized intellectual attainment; and the same could be done for Christians. But it would again not be difficult to compile a lengthy list of persecutions, arbitrary confiscations, attempted forced conversions, or pogroms.
- G.E. von Grunebaum, "Eastern Jewry Under Islam," Viator, (1971)

The attitude of the Muslims toward the Christians and the Jews is that of a master towards slaves, whom he treats with a certain lordly tolerance so long as they keep their place. Any sign of pretension to equality is promptly repressed.
- H.E.W. Young, British Vice Consul in Mosul, 1909

It is instructive to consider the following hadiths, an Arabic term which refers to the oral tradition by means of which sayings or deeds attributed to the Prophet Mohammed have been handed down to Muslims:
"Verily, the word of God teaches us, and we implicitly believe it, that for a Muslim to kill a Jew, or for him to be killed by a Jew, ensures him an immediate entry into Heaven and into the august presence of God Almighty."

"The hour [i.e., salvation] will not come until you fight against the Jews; and the stone would say, `O Muslim! There is a Jew behind me: come and kill him.'"

"Believers, take neither Jews nor Christians for your friends"
[Sura 5:50]
"Allah ... forbids you to make friends with those who have fought against you ... or abetted others to do so"
[Sura 60:9]
"Fight those that believe not in Allah - such men as practice not the religion of truth, being of those who have been given the Book- until they pay tribute out of hand AND HAVE BEEN HUMBLED"
[Koran 9:29]

Of course Muslims are at war with Kaffurs - it is the correct Islamic thing to do. It's just that Muslims keep lying about it.

Muslims are not at 'war' with unbelievers or Kuffars.

If that was the case India, and all the former Muslim colonies would be entirely Muslim.

Zionist love to say Muslims are at war, but the truth is entirely different. In fact if you read the Talmud, the jewish holy book, you will find passages that preach hatred to all non jews and that to kill a non jew is a 'sacrafice to god'. Islam however teaches that to kill an innocent life if totally forbidden.

What is tiresome is constantly reminding people to study islam and islamic history properly and not to believe untruths churned out by zionists who just want to see a battle between Christians and Muslims.

Christians are our brothers.

All it would take is a for a few rich Arabs/Muslim to buy the private media and your problem is solved. The Jews learned this lesson a long time ago. In the meantime, zionists will continue to spew their bile of hatred towards Muslims, as the zionist posters to this article clearly show.
