Are We Going To Have One Start Date For Ramadan & One Eid? Print E-mail
Saturday, 13 November 2004

Muslims have reached a new low, so low that we compete with each other in levels of ignorance. While the diversity in our religion is a form of blessing, the nature of the differences we observe during what should be a communal festive period is based on nothing but a lack of basic knowledge and common sense.

The differences on the celebration of Eid this time round were because of which country's sighting of the moon, we should follow. The choices are many: the first Muslim country to see the moon, the closest Muslim country to see the moon, the UK's observation of the moon. Let us start by ruling out any voices of deviance who may suggest visualisation of the moon from other planetary bodies. We live on Earth; it is from Earth that we shall observe the moon.

Then it remains to be answered, should we follow the moon of another Muslim country or the moon of the UK? The answer is simple and so elegant, yet it is denied by the some of our Mosque leaders, as it would undermine their authority and their coveted positions.

During the time of the Prophet Peace Be Upon Him, the Muslim empire had expanded over three continents. When the moon was observed in Damasacus, the Makkans did not follow. It simply was not possible, and the knowledgeable Companions May Allaah Be Pleased With Them, did not have issue with the fact that they would celebrate Eid based on an observation of the Moon in their own locality. Not in a locality a hundred thousand miles away. However times have changed, now we have one "global community" and communication problems do not remain as they did then. So whose moon should we follow now?

In Islam we pray Fajr before sunrise. Maghrib prayer is offered at sunset. Every school of faith, every sect in Islam agrees on these approximate timings, give or take a small margin of error. What they ALL also agree on is that when it says sunrise it means the sunrise in your location. A Muslim living in Japan will not follow the sunrise of Saudi Arabia, a Muslim in the outskirts of Outer Mongolia will not follow the sunrise of Morocco. So why do some of our Imams insist on following the moon sighting of another country? It defies belief. That is not all, it gets better.

The whole year round, Muslims follow the Lunar calendar. It is not just during Ramadan. There are other months, Rajab, Shaban, Shawwal. Once the new moon is seen the new month will begin. The whole year round these leaders follow the dates given by British observations.

Yet only when it comes to Eid, this whole thing becomes an issue. Why do they follow the British moon the whole year round EXCEPT for two Eid's and the start of Ramadhan?

This is where I will introduce an Arabic word, but I promise to explain. Fitnah. It means disruption, corruption, disorder. At a time when Muslims need to remain united during one of the most troubling periods in our history we are being ripped apart by these elements. As our brothers and sisters die, we celebrate our Eids in extravagance, and not only that we celebrate them as we fight between each other.

This whole situation is just further proof of the sad and sorry state of certain Muslim leaders, and no longer is it an excuse for you, the reader, to just feign ignorance. These leaders are causing this deliberate difference between Muslims at a time when it is imperative that we stay united. And your silence is doing nothing but giving them the power to do so. If anything you are aiding and abetting.

Be part of the solution, not the problem.

Well said.

There will never be unity as long there are mosques who will always follow Saudi Arabia for Ramadhan and Eid.

Is that because Saudia funds them?

Somehow Pakistan always manages to have Eid at least 2 days after the rest of the world!

Do they have a separate Moon I wonder?

I think this demonstrates arrogance on the part of MPACuk...THis is an issue which has been widely discussed, and it is far more complicated than MPACuk makes it out to be....Simply blaming the leaders of the mosques is definitley not the solution. The last thing id want is to entertain such a discussion which never ceases.....So why bother reigniting again...As for Mohammed Zahid and his comments - this is the problem that such discussions cause...People start thinking that the Muslims cant unite until the Eid issue has been resolved. Surely not a deep thinker!! Lets not get carried away with this relativley small issue...Unity doesn't come about when we all deciede on one day for Eid...Unity will come when then the Islamic State returns, in the mean time we pray and work for its return..

This is a reflection on Muslim unity and the process of consultation and agreement. It's not that one party is correct and the other wrong. It's about putting the differences aside and coming up with something that is agreed.

surely we should start and end ramadhan when we sight the moon in our own locality? or country and if we hear that 2 honest people sighted the moon in our country we should go with that? rather than each group following its country of origin.

Are we turning to the Kibla for our prayers because the Saudi's built and fund our mosques? Definitely not. People want to follow Saudi Arabia in determining thier Eid days for the sake of unity.

As far as i have always been taught once the moon is sighted in a muslim country then we can start fasting. The issue is not the following of the moons. It is the fact that the brelvi imams do not want to start their fasting at the same time as the wahabi mosques. ONE of the biggest causes of disunity between the muslims is us being catergorised depending on which mosque we go to. THE SUNNI (Brelvi) VS Wahabi divide is one of the biggest causes of disunity. Living where i do each year the brelvi mosque will always do eid or start fasting the day after the mosque i go to just to be differrent. They do not care about the moon. All they want to prove to the blind following idiots in their mosques is that the other mosque is wrong and we are right. SO the issue of the moon does not even come into it. We al have SKy or cable in our homes and aess to the ISLAM or other channels which inform us of the moon sighting so there should be no problem. THe problem is some of the Imams wanting to be differnt and retain some sort of hold over the mosque committee.

Don't blame the Saudis etc.

The Saudis last year informed the Mosques in Britain that we (Saudis) look towards the moon and upon that we celebrate EID.

It was quite rightly said taht the Brits should go upon the sighting of the moon in the UK and upon that celebrate Eid.

And anyway what is EID? when others starve and suffer. Quite rightly put by MPACUK.

I think for once we could iron the shirt we haven't worn since last Eid and the money we save, send it to those who are less fortunate.

Well Well i am surprised with Mpac'c Ramadan Moon theory.. i expected Mpac from all other organisations to go with the unity option and say to show a United front to the whole world we should observe Eid on 1 day.. but for some reason they have not.. as for Ramadhan and Eid being on diffeernt days 1400 years ago . the main reason was communication.. but that is not the issue today.. we are willing to use modern means to see the Moon yet we do not apply the same to communication.. which was not present 1400 years ago. Double standards i call it !!

Salaam Alaykum,Salaam Alaykum,
Unity is not to have one EID or one Mosque or one Imam or one united FIQH law, that is completely wrong, since the door of EJTIHAAD and the intellectual work of interpreting the QUran and HAdeeth is open and encouraged by Islam, then we differences are promoted by default, so having differences is real test for all the Muslim, it creates more opportunities for the Muslims to think and educate, and respect each other with tolerance.
The unity is to love each other as brothers, tolerate each other, embrace each other, and live with various differences like one united body.
The Prophet (S) said Muslims are like one body, and it is obvious that the body parts are different, their functions are different but linked to each other, that is how we should be, let us have five EIDs but still be with each other and living like one body.
Salaam Alaykum,

I find it facinating that represenatives of MPACUK, who are not able to sit with other Muslim Brothers without offending them and disagreeing with them in an unislamic manner are now advocating unity!!

As For following Saudia Arabia, Again MPACUK need to do their research. I would suggest that they simply ask their families or dearest and loved one who intend to perform the Hajj, to decide that they will perform their Hajj several days apart from the rest of the Ummah who will be following Saudi Arabia as clearly they have decided to follow their own wimms and not followed any one organisation.

May Allah (SWT) give us insight into the Truth

Salam All Brothers in Islam!

No one above has given a reason based on islamic principals. Everyone has given his own opinion as what they think right in their wisdom or trying to take the mick at other religious groups if not they are trying to blame their local mosque/ imam.
i request all these self made scholars to understand the issue in detail before inflicting your opinion on others. No one has mentioned what are basic usool in this case and what is right answer to this suggestion.

AOA
I don’t understand why people do not follow astronomy and observatory, why do we follow astronomy for other prayer/namaz?

I think our Imam need to change their view, they shouldn’t be following Saudia because they are funding them. In UK, most of Wahabi and DiyoBandi Mosques are following Saudia because they get loads of fund from them. They got 2 big mosques in London and other small mosques follow these Saudi funded mosques.

MOON CAN NOT BE VISIBLE AT THE SAME TIME AS SAUDIA IN UK, THERE WILL BE ALWAYS A DAY DIFFRENCE for more info http://websurf.nao.rl.ac.uk/

I read some people saying how come Pakistan always start 2 days late etc, my answer is Saudi got there 32 years Islamic calendar which was done in 80s and by now this calendar is going 1 day ahead.

About Pakistan, according to my research, Pakistan’s First Fast/roza was on Wednesday 25th September, so as around word, but Saudi found it 2 days earlier, how come they manage to see it, that is surprising (read this article : http://archive.gulfnews.com/articles/06/10/04/10072189.html )

In UK, first Ramdan was on 25th September 2006, Tuesday but some of us followed saudia and some of them just completed 30 days of Shaban ( because they started Shaban Early).

Those who started on Sat 23th Oct 06, and followed ICC/ Central London Mosque and Media for them the truth is “Moon Set” was at 1854 and “Sun Set” was at 1900 on 22nd September 06, moon was gone before SUN SET so how come Central Mosque started this FITNAH?

For Those who started on Sun 24th Oct 06, SUNSET was at1857 and MOONSET was at 1803, so Moon was only there for six minutes, but it was below the Danjon Limit so no one could see it.

FOR EID NOW ( LONDON and around):

On Sunday 22nd Oct 06, SUNSET is at 1753 and MOONSET is at 1735, so moon will be gone 18 minutes before Sunset. So EID is Impossible on Monday 23rd Oct.

One 23rd Oct, SUNSET is at 1751 and MOONSET is at 1750, so it will be gone a minute before Sunset, I think AhleSunnat Waljammat UK and Europe need to take notice of it as moon will be gone and EID can’t be on Tuesday 24th Oct.

ON 24th Oct 06, SUNET is 1749 and MOONSET is 1811, moon will be visible between these time and best time to see it is 1759. it will be visible under perfect conditions.

If you want to know where am I getting this information, visit: http://websurf.nao.rl.ac.uk/surfbin/runsurf.cgi
And click on MOON_VIZ First visibility of the new crescent Moon (data available for 1980-2021 only).

To see MAP of moon rise, click on “INFO”.

May Allah give us and our imams some AKAL so they don't divide muslims, and not make fun of us with in non-muslims
