Why Mosque Leaders Deserve No Mercy Print E-mail
Friday, 25 November 2005

You know the committee members and Imams who run our Mosques get a pretty good press from within the Muslim community.

There is always some so called practicing Muslim ready to jump up and defend them, as if it was the only good deed they had ever done, and they were going to get a one way ticket to heaven by defending these mafiosi who destroy our community, who do zilch do counter the Islamophobia in our Communities across UK.

MPACUK being the only group in Britain to have so far highlighted the issue of Mosque reform takes a pretty firm line, improve, protect and help the community or be prepared to be held accountable.

This is of course unheard of in the Muslim community.

In the modern world every professional individual or institution in the western world is accountable to the public. But in the Muslim world it seems holding anyone accountable is wrong and un-Islamic. Our leaders create an aura around them, they are to too ‘good and pious’ to be held accountable by lowly nothings like you and me.

So called practicing Muslims ‘their followers’ shout down any opposition they might have.

Of course this is rubbish, accountability was established as an Islamic principle at the dawn of Islam, and was held up by all of the Prophets PBUH Companions RA including the Prophet PBUH himself.

That is something conveniently never taught in these so called religious circles these people attend, as they ‘perfect themselves’. They teach their followers to keep silent in the face of oppression and injustice. Concentrate on the basics they tell them. The world is not your problem.

That is why the Muslim world decayed. Other powers grew, we stagnated. No one challenged this slip into oblivion. To this day it is still decaying, because no one can talk about the failures of the men that lead us. If we can’t talk about it, how can we ever change it?

There are others too who hold back change of the groups and Mosques that we so badly need. These are the “take your time” brigade.

They have never lifted a finger to change anything, now they rush to tell others why we must “take our time” instead of wanting things sooner, better to wait till later. One wonders how long these excuse makers for our destruction and decay are prepared to wait.

I'm ashamed to say that I nearly did go quiet after many of my friends said, complaining about the Mosques was wrong. Things would change eventually. I should be a 'good muslim and focus on perfecting myself' not perfecting the Mosques.

Then over the last two days I had two of the most saddening calls on the MPACUK line, I’ve ever heard.

The first was from a Muslim sister. She was crying on the phone, begging me to help her.

“They have smashed my windows, tried to rob my house, and beaten me up in the street, because I wear a headscarf. Please I’ve called everyone, but no one is willing to help. I live alone. I’m scared. Help me, I’m in despair. Allah knows its wrong to commit suicide, but I feel so much like ending this misery”.

The Police as usual had not helped her, simply written reports and driven off. She lived on her own in a block of flats; racist thugs had made her life a hell.

I asked her one question.

“Have you gone to the mosque, that is the heart of the community, they must organise some help?”

She had, they had told her simply

“it was nothing to do with them”.

My blood boiled. Was the life of 2 million Muslims in this country nothing to do with the Mosques that serve us!

I couldn’t sleep that night, my mind went round and round, anger boiling into despair at our state. How could these goons have let this sister struggle without even bothering to lend a hand! Why had the community allowed them to get away with it!

As these pacified practicing Muslims would like to say to me when I meet them “She should make duaa and wait, things will change one day, why is she in such a rush!”.

The second call was equally as distressing. An old woman had been kicked out of her house for failing to pay the rent, by a heartless landlord. She had slept on the street for 3 days. Not knowing what to do, or who to turn to, she asked a stranger to call a Muslim group who may help her.

They called us. When asked if she had asked the Mosque, he told us, she had but they had refused to help, saying it's nothing to do with them. She could barely speak English. I wondered again that night, as the news told us it was going to be the coldest winter in 50 years, how that old woman would survive. What if it was my mother, would the Mosque have turned her away too?

MPACUK simply did not have the volunteers or financial support to help people like this. But were 2 million Muslims in Britain all down to us? There are thousands of so called Muslim groups, yet all they seemed to do was ‘talk and preach’ never thinking of supporting the worst off amongst us.

Islam to these Muslim leaders seemed to be nothing more then ‘preaching’ - never doing. I thought back to the time of Hadhrat Umar RTA who walked the streets at night as Caliph of the empire of Islam to see if anyone was in need, image Tony Blair doing that. Nowadays, they could die outside their houses, and it was someone else’s problem!

I thought back to the children of Palestine and how Zionist groups in the UK always got their way in Government and the Media, and our Mosque leaders stupidly and stubbornly let them, refusing even to lift a finger. Claiming “duaa” was the only thing Allah wanted them to do!

What of Chechnya , Iraq? What have they really ever done for the Ummah? Why can our enemies do it, but we can’t!

What of rising Islamaphobia, what are they doing to ease community tensions? What even of God forbid feeding, clothing or even helping local homeless or helpless non Muslims! I suppose the leaders would tell us to focus on the “basics” of Islam instead of helping people, after all why waste time!

Things need to change, to help us all. No more excuses. No more foot dragging. We must never again be silenced or afraid to ask what on earth the leaders who claim to represent us are actually doing for us. Even though some of the followers of these leaders find it uncomfortable, and try to shout us down.

I do not doubt your sincerity in wanting mosques to be more pro-active and that pro-active response to be at your pace rather than their pace. One should remind you that many of these Mosques have been built and maintained not at your behest but by the community that they serve.

You provide anecdotal evidence as to the apparent inaction of 2 mosques. My question is did you verify from the mosques the claims being made?

If true is the response of the mosques uniform or are these isolated cases?

And what was the response you had been expecting from the mosques and not from other members of the muslim community if not the wider community?

I believe that mosques should not be centers of politicisation, it is not the purpose of imams. Imams are there to allow for the teaching and understanding of islam, to inform on the best way to live ones life as a muslim living in the UK.

If you want an active political response then that should be mpacs purpose, if you want a humanitarian response then create the means for that response. This has to be a matter of co-operation not dictat.

The fact is you are wanting mosques to be in your image, maybe we should be seeking that mosques should be in Gods image.

My feeling torwards Mosque commitees is of utter hatred and dispair.

These hypocrites, like so many in our God forsaken community are a obstacle that needs to be smashed without mercy.

The damn beards and baggy clothes make my skin crawl !

Wendy mann
you make me sick!
The Mosques were always centre of politics, read the history of the ummah! Yes Imams should be teaching us Islam, isn't politics part of Islam?
Your claim that we want the mosque to be in our image and not in Gods Image, shows how much you understand what we are calling for. WE WANT THE MOSQUES TO BE IN GODS IMAGE!!! Wouldn't God want us to be active and fighting for Justics? Your telling me in Gods image the mosques would sit back and watch war MPs get elected? Wouldnt a mosque in Gods image actually be political active, working for justice and peace? Yes we want mosques to be in Gods Image, not in YOUR image!

One way to get everyone more involved is to possibly have a printable version of action alerts posted on this site. We can then ask the committee members if we may place it on the notice board. This way we get improved ties, more awareness and more participation

People who usually visit Masjids will almost certainly read information posted on it. I know I regularly do.

MPACUK - Pass me the details of the sister who is having problems and also the Elder who is suffering.

I have the resources and connections to look into both situations.

Even if it means going down to the locations where this injustice is taking place. Inshallah the pair won't need to complain.

And as for the Mosques, come on you should know by now that the Bull doesn't provide milk.

The article is borne out of frustration. We are looking for others to be leaders when it is up to us to assume leadership. I think a more constructive approach would be for MPAC to assume leadership of this project and go and teach the masjids about participation. It's an educational project we are talking about here. Remember that the Ulama are very poorly paid for what they do and they don't have to do what they do. On the same note, the committees are what they are because others do not want to do the work that is required in a committee. I think that the Ulama are a lot more open than we make them out to be. They just need to be approached in the right manner.

yes, this article is born out of frustration! Perhaps if we were all so frustrated about the srtatus quo in our mosques and every other "all say and no do" organisation we would all become activated. Wake up Muslim Ummah!

Why is it, people here passing the buck? Saying, "MPACUK should take leadership! Why shouldn't we take leadership? We the people, the Ummah, the 2 million strong. If we all gave £10 each, guess how much that will make? If we just gave £1 each then that be 2 million pounds.

We know what Mosques can't do. We know their patehtic at this anyway. We also know they are not equipped because they are not BOTHERED anyway!!!!!

But we should be bothered. WE, all of us, should be giving MPAC monies and then MPAC CAN DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT. Or we get off our butt and do something about it.

Mosques, committees, are not the problem. We are PART OF THE PROBLEM because we ARE NOT PART OF THE SOLUTION!

wendy mann - you cant be a muslim asking those dumb questions ..and if you are - have you been in a coma all your life?!

The mosques are pathetic, offering no service to any of us, until we demand more of them, we will never get it.

Well done mpac! - dont let these goons and their half witted supporters like wendy shut you up!

Aslaam May Allah (SWT) open our eyes and heart to the plights of all muslims and any human being who is in need.

Having read the article I was able to understand why Asghar was so angry and why he attcks the Mosques.

The article reflecs the true nature of the some of the Mosques and I have infact contacted a number of Mosque and of courses most dont answer their telephones or there is someone who is not interested in taking messages.

Women are particularly at a disadvantage especially if they have no male supporter, even in this day an age.

I pray that help arrives for those women who contacted MPAK and certainly you have redeemedcyourself in this case.
