After 34 Days – Israel’s Longest War Ends - With Defeat Some Say! Print E-mail
Tuesday, 15 August 2006

Resolution 1701 which timetabled for the “cessation of hostilities” was agreed by the Lebanese cabinet and Hizbullah on Saturday and the Israeli cabinet on Sunday. The ceasefire began at 0800 local time. It ended what was Israel’s longest war and accomplished the systematic bombing of Lebanon back to what it was 20 years prior as well as the killing of over 1000 civilians. Any other such ‘achievements’ are yet to be discovered.

The violence had continued right up until the ceasefire deadline. In southern Beirut, war planes menacingly continued to patrol the skies and carry out air strikes until fifteen minutes before the deadline. Seven people were killed in a single attack over the weekend as Israeli war planes attacked a convoy of cars transporting hundreds of Christian families to the Bekaa valley headed by the Lebanese army. At least 19 people were killed by Israeli bombardment over Lebanon on Sunday including the deaths of a mother and her three children. It was reported that one Israeli civilian was killed by a Hizbullah Katyusha rocket in Northern Israel.

While the mainstream media reports the ceasefire as continuing to be upheld, they also reported that the Israeli army opened fire on Hizbullah militants resulting in one casualty. The man was said to be among a group of people approaching an Israeli outpost. This was perceived to be threatening behaviour and the soldiers opened fire killing one of the men. Nevertheless the systematic bombardment of Lebanese towns and villages did come to a halt as did the rocket fire into northern Israel.

The possibility of clashes on the ground however remains high as following the massive land invasion, the Israeli army continues to occupy areas of land up to the Litani River, 18 miles from the Israeli border. The presence of the estimated 30,000 troops is a sensitive issue and the very fact that they remain is seen as threatening. Israel maintains it will continue to be an occupying force in southern Lebanon until the Lebanese army is deployed alongside the UN peace keeping force. Hizbullah although currently upholding the ceasefire, argue that because the Israeli army are occupying Lebanon they remain a justified target for their resistance.

Today also marked a day of return for the thousands of people driven out from their homes because of the war. Families packed into cars which squeezed through the heavily battered roads taking what provisions they could in the hope that their homes were among the standing and unscathed. Israelis who had remained in Northern Israel also began to enter the streets from the bunkers in which they had been sheltering from Hizbullah rocket fire.

There was a degree of relief for the aid agencies who for the last month have sought desperately to go to the aid of the besieged civilians numbered at some 100,000 in Southern Lebanon but were unable to do so because of the continued bombing raids. Travel however remains difficult as many bridges and roads have been destroyed and furthermore Israel continued to impose a traffic curfew over southern Lebanon. Bringing aid into the country is similarly difficult as the naval and air blockade remains in place.

The victor in this war is a matter of debate as both sides staunchly maintains that they were the winners of the war. While it easy to see who inflicted the most damage on the enemy, Hizbullah’s chief Sheikh Hasan Nasrullah commented that the very fact that Hizbullah was able to continue its resistance against the fourth largest army in the world, was victory enough. He further promised that his organisation would help in the process of rebuilding the houses which have been destroyed during the war.

The results of what one commentator described as “the latest dirty war in Lebanon” are the deaths of over 1000 Lebanese civilians and 43 Israeli civilians as well as the damage of over $2.5 billion to Lebanon from the Israeli bombings of all its infrastructure. Questions will now be asked about the conduct of the Israeli army during the war. Most notably the indiscriminate tactics of the bombing campaigns as well as the use of cluster bombs in densely populated residential areas.

Independent journalist Robert Fisk concluded the following to be the consequences of the month long war:

“The guerrilla army - "terrorists" to the Israelis and Americans but increasingly heroes across the Muslim world - have many dead to avenge, although their leadership seems less interested in exacting an eye for an eye and far more eager to strike at Israel's army.

At this fatal juncture in Middle East history - and no one should underestimate this moment's importance in the region - the Israeli army appears as impotent to protect its country as the Hizbollah clearly is to protect Lebanon.

But if the ceasefire collapses, as seems certain, neither the Israelis nor the Americans appear to have any plans to escape the consequences. The US saw this war as an opportunity to humble Hizbollah's Iranian and Syrian sponsors but already it seems as if the tables have been turned. The Israeli military appears to be efficient at destroying bridges, power stations, gas stations and apartment blocks - but signally inefficient in crushing the "terrorist" army they swore to liquidate."

As per expected, no mention of Hizbollah's responsibility for this conflict, their terrorist activities, preventing of Lebaneses from leaving their homes prior to the bombing by Israel, their target of Israeli civilians, etc. This hatred of Jews on behalf of so many Muslims and the support of terrorists by the same are why the Muslim community is being trusted less and less.

PLease please do not be fooled. War means more land for Israel.
Peace will be offred ONLY when there is no more prospect for more land grab and steal.

Israel neither won nor lost it is maintaining the status quo of them against us. It does not want to destroy Hizbollah or Hammas but keep them to threaten it’s own voters with this feeble threat of terrorism, the belief that looming above the Jews is total annihilation by an enemy.
In order to control and subdue it’s own mainstream liberals to draw them in line behind the extremist ultra zealous religious Zionist groups (settlers who arrive from all over Europe to claim Palestine territories and build settlements with American funding) who dictate the political agenda to the majority of Israelis. The agenda is land grab by war.
What does the majority of the inhabitants of the area want is peace.
What do the Zionist want from inception of its creation helped by the almighty American’s through the UN is. . . land.
And land is the issue for these Zionist settlers. Through their Zionist ideals, which engineered Israel on the Palestinians, they proclaim that the whole of Palestine is theirs and do not understand why Palestinians just don’t pack up and leave their home and go to live somewhere like Saudi Arabia where there is a large mass of land.
Now if peace is achieved then no more lands can be stolen from the Palestinians, which is no good for Zionists.
Every thing that the Zionist Israel state does is measured to antagonise as many Palestinians and Arabs as they can to provoke conflict and then blame it on terrorists.
They want suicide bombers they want Jews to die for as long as that happens Zionist Israel can tighten its grip on its people through FEAR and on the Palestinian’s going on and grabing their lands and slowly but surely Palestine is shrinking. Since 1948 the Israeli occupation the Palestinian status diminished from a world recognised peaceful state with boundaries and no known enemies Jew, Christian or any other religious sect for thousands of years, to the world’s largest concentration camps of Muslim and Christian Arabs in existence with millions of refugees all labelled as terrorist fascist Muslims. If that is the case why we did not hear about them before 1948. Yet the first known terrorists in Palestine were the Zionist Jews who blew up the King David Hotel in Jerusalem, killing 92 innocent people and letterbox bombs exploding and killing in mainland Britain.
Who is a terrorist Menachem Begin Israel first Prim Minster was most wanted and hunted by the British as the world’s number one terrorist on their list.

Look at the strategy in America and Britain in the past years they operate the politics of FEAR in order to camouflage and pass their draconian policies. 48mins threat from Iraq and we go to war.
Israel is subjecting people to terror in and around Palestine with its overwhelming American arson. So whether you agree with it or not don’t be surprised when these people retaliate in the only way they are attacked

Request for info.

Do we know how many and what type of missiles, rockets, mortar and bombs and God know what else Israel dropped during their onslaught on the Lebanese.

Because it was clear that they were running out of stocks and yet there is no source documenting how many they actually used. Maybe that’s why the lull in violence.

If any one knows please post the details here.

We are always told especially by the Israelis how many missiles Hizbollah have fired into the skies targeting Israel most of which we are told by the media don’t even reach or hit the targets. Yet much is made about them even though pictures of the damage these missiles cause do not at all compare with anything like as much as what Israeli bombs and missiles inflict and create with their immensely powerful warheads (made in America and flown through Britain)

Have the Jews used any weapons with depleted uranium warheads as did the Americans and British in Iraq? Because if they did then we can see look term health problems appearing in the Lebanese civilians.

I heard it reported that a Lebanese child was blown up handling an unexploded cluster bomb that was dropped in build up areas, well that’s where they dropped all their bombs anyway. But that is in defiance of international law.

Israel War crimes are they going to be investigated and charged and don’t think so.

Hey the Israelis don’t do things in half measures but rather in biblical terms. Glade they have not yet totally wiped out the Palestinians and robbed them of what’s left of their lands like they did with the Canaanites as told in the bible total annihilation and genocide of a race. It would appear that there is something in their psychic . . . killing.

Jeff Thompson: Quote

"The consciousness of being at war, and therefore in danger, makes handing-over of all power to a small caste seem the natural, unavoidable condition of survival...It does not matter whether the war is actually happening, and, since no decisive victory is possible, it does not matter whether the war is going well or badly. All that is needed is a state of war should exist. The war is waged by each ruling group against its own subjects, and the object of the war is not to make or prevent conquests of territory, but to keep the structure of society intact."

I love it. Everything is about what the lebanese lost. Not one word "why."Not one word of the millions of Israelis that were displaced. Not one word of Lebanese being used as shields or their homes being used as weapons storage. You people are hypocrites.truthfully, Barry

This is so funny, "millions of israelis" - the part of nazi occupied Palestine that was retaliated does not contain "millions"!! The genocide of CHRISTIANS AND MUSLIMS BY ZIONISTS far outstrips anything in Europe. There is documented fact that isralis shoot over the shoulder of children that they are hiding behind, but israel repeats itself with the whole world laughing at it.
