Calling All Black and Asian Students Print E-mail
Wednesday, 26 April 2006
Dear Student,
The NUS Black Students' Campaign was set up to give those of African, Asian, Caribbean and Middle Eastern heritage a direct voice into the heart of the student movement. It recognises the diversity in our movement and the issues that affect our communities, but unites students who face common discrimination and barriers in society.
Our Campaign focuses on four key areas:
  1. Lack of Representation in wider society - from our universities to Parliament;
  2. Inequalities in Education from unfair marking, to the exclusion of our history, and high rates of college expulsions;
  3. Rise Against Racism from the growing threat of the BNP to violent attacks on our students;
  4. International Justice to build solidarity with those that face inequalities in communities across the world.
At our forthcoming summer conference (May 20-21, Birmingham ), delegates will vote for the new NUS Black Students' Officer, Committee and policy that will decide what areas our Campaign should prioritise. By attending the conference, you can play a key part in setting the direction of our focus in the year ahead.
Advice for Those Wanting to Register for Conference
If you want to come to NUS Black Students' Conference please follow this easy guide:
  1. Go to your student union and tell them that you want to go to NUS Black Students' Conference on behalf of your college/uni. Remember you don't have to be a student union officer to attend. Any African, Asian, Caribbean or Middle Eastern person can go.
  2. Every college/uni can send one delegate for FREE , any subsequent people they might want to send have to be paid for. Every college/uni can send up to four people.
  3. Tell the union officer that you got information about this event from an email the NUS Black Students' Campaign sent you, and that you've seen it on the NUS web site.
  4. Remind the union officer that they ONLY have to pay for the train fare to the conference in Birmingham because NUS pays for the food, accommodation and registration costs. It is important that they register you BEFORE the May 12 th deadline to get this offer.
  5. Ask your union officer to call the NUS Events Office on 08712 218 221 or emailing events@nus.org.uk to ask for the official registration form to be posted to them.
  6. Once they receive this form (usually within 2 working days), the union officer should complete it with your details. It is worth making a photocopy of the form (in case NUS lose it) before posting it back to: Ian Connell, NUS Events, 2nd Floor, Centro 3, Mandela Street , London NW1 ODU .
  7. You are now registered. At the conference itself, you will need to show NUS a letter from your student union confirming that you are the delegate. This must be signed by a student union officer. You will also need to show your college/uni student card at the conference.
  8. If you have any problems at all please contact Pav Akhtar, NUS Black Students' Officer, on 07725 463 816 or Ruqayyah Collector (Black Students' Committee) on 07966 627 291.

May I request all students who read this leave a comment saying whether they're going to the NUS event, whether they're part of an ISOC or not etc.
Because I'm trying to prove my own theory that ISOC Muslims will rarely do something like this, it is much much much more likely that a "non-practicing" Muslim will take up this task. Please prove me wrong. I beg all you ISOCs.
