Christian and Muslim solidarity in Alum Rock following preaching row Print E-mail
Tuesday, 03 June 2008

mpacbhamlogosmall.jpgMPACUK Comment: There should be no such thing as a ‘no-go area’ in Britain for anyone. Birmingham is vibrant multi-faith city and people of faith in particular, should always be considerate and cordial to one another. There are rumours that Christians are specifically targeting Muslims to convert them. This initiative, if true, will undoubtedly raise tension between the communities. It would be no different if Muslims stood outside a church or cathedral trying to convert Christians. Birmingham’s Muslims and Christians should remember their common values instead of engaging in a pointless numbers game.

MEMBERS of different faiths stood side by side to deny that Birmingham's Alum Rock had become a no-go area for non-Muslims.

The message of solidarity came after two Christian preachers claimed they were stopped from handing out Bible literature to four Muslim boys by a police community support officer.

Arthur Cunningham and Joseph Abraham say they were told by the officer, who is believed to be Muslim, that attempting to convert Muslims to Christianity was a hate crime.

The officer is alleged to have told the preachers: "If you come back here and get beaten up, well, you have been warned."

Fears that no-go areas for Christians were emerging in British towns and cities were expressed recently by the Bishop of Rochester.

Yesterday, members of the Church of England, Catholic and Islamic faiths gathered together in a bid to dispel the fears.

The group met at Maryam House, an inter-faith centre built three years ago next to Our Lady of the Rosary and St Therese Church, in Parkfield Road.

It serves Catholic churchgoers and worshippers at the Zia ul Quran Jamia Mosque in nearby St Saviour's Road.

Father Bernard Kelly, priest at the church, said: "There's been a great deal of work going on around here to bring the community together.

"We have young Muslim children who come to the church at Easter and Christmas and take part in nativities and plays.

"Muslim families have no problem in sending their children to Christian schools here, which I think says a lot about people's views and the way the community is integrated."

Toby Howarth, the Bishop of Birmingham's inter-faith adviser, said: "We are worried the message has been sent out that Alum Rock is a no-go area and Christians are being told to leave.

"We want to dispel this myth and put on record that there are really good relationships here between different faiths."

Mohammed Yaqub, who is helping to form the Alum Rock Residents' Association along with two churches, said: "I don't think there is a problem with Christians and Muslims here.

"It's the first time we have created a residents' association here and that's due to Father Kelly, Christians and Muslims working together."

Mr Yaqub, a Muslim who works as a volunteer for the chaplaincy at Heartlands Hospital, said the preachers who were stopped had "the right to free speech".

Diane Dawson, a volunteer at Our Lady of the Rosary and St Therese Church, said: "We live in a community of different beliefs, but we rejoice in that."

This seem to be missing the point. The issue of the Saudi-style morality-guardians policing should be addressed to policing authorities not the religious leaders. Religioous people are perfectly free to campaign peacefully in public and it's the the police's jobh to protect that right, not suppress it.

I think hr point has been missed. I read the full story woth comments from both sides including the West Midlands Police Authority:

The Christian Preachers were sent away because an argument had started between them and a group of Muslim men who did not want to hear about chritianity. The police officers who were a mixture of White chritian and Muslim, sent the Chritians away to avoid any violence as that was the way it was looking.

Fair enough you want to preach, just go to the shopping centre, not to the heart of the Muslim community in Birmingham and dictate to a dozen young Muslim men that Christianity is the light.

Assalaam walaikum and Greetings

I agree that there should be NO 'no-go' areas in any areas of the UK.

The problem with some Muslims, is that they prefer an insular 'Muslim Only' or 'Pakistani Only' (etc) type of existence in some areas and refuse to mix with others in case their 'culture' or religious beliefs would somehow be affected. When such Muslims see an 'outsider' or 'not one of us' come into their comfort zone then they feel that they can tell those persons off (especially when they hand out religious literature')

Interesting to note that the same Muslims have no hesitation to reap the benefits of the UK Law (such as housing and low-income benefits from the Christians when it suits them, but thats a seperate subject).

Muslims who feel threatened somehow by Christains handing out Bibles are probably insecure in themselves or are not strong willed enough to handle 'interfaith dialogue'.

When BIBLE pushers or Christains come to my home, I do not take this as a threat, or a 'hate crime'. I take this golden opportunity to tell them what Islam means and how they have misunderstood Jesus as being a divine figure. I tell them 'Son of GOD' actually means servant of GOD, and I can prove Jesus is not who they think he is by their own BIBLE. Some Christians take interest. Some never come back.

I take whatever literature they give, read it to acquire their point of understanding, and then hand it back with my comments.

My daughter intends to go to a disciplined and well mannered Catholic School, and I prefer this than sending my daughter to a local state School where there is no respect for teachers or pupils.

Am I worried about how my daughter will be affected by the Christian teachings or the fact that their religious studies are based upon the BIBLE?...No. Because my daughter knows the fundamentals of Islam and she knows who JESUS really is. She knows that Jesus's kind nature comes from him being a Prophet.

If the allegation that handing a BIBLE to Muslims is somehow a "hate-crime" and the BIBLE pushers are likely to get 'beaten up', then don't be too surprised if Muslims preaching about Islam within shopping centres are also labelled as 'hate crimes' by the Christian fundamentalists.

This kind of attitude is what breaks Society down, and makes normal decent minded Christians to become anti-Islam in feelings.

When Christians see Muslims being given every opportunity to mix in this "Christian" Country, reaping all benefits of this Country, then to find out that when a BIBLE is handed out they are threatened then this is what contributes to Islamophobia.

We Muslims have much more in common with the Christians than we think. And we should be well minded of this.

YUSUFALI: ...and nearest among them in love to the believers wilt thou find those who say, "We are Christians": because amongst these are men devoted to learning and men who have renounced the world, and they are not arrogant.

There are only 3 main areas we disagree with, with the Christian beliefs.

If Muslims somehow feel threatened by BIBLEs being passed to Muslims then this shows how insecure some Muslims are of themselves in that they just can't handle it.

This is probably a reflection that most Muslims are Muslims by name only and have very little knowledge of what Islam really is and so feel threatened and insecure in case they feel that somehow they may become influenced by the BIBLEs teachings.

Only a weak person with little knowledge feels threatened. A strong or knowledgeable person can handle it.

There is no problem at Alum Rock. The neighbouring ward of Washwood Heath is majority Christian according to the census statistics and there is no problem there. There is a no such thing as a no go area in Birmingham. If anything the no go areas are due to crime and violence rather than along religious affilations.

This seems to be an isolated incident with a police officer making a comment that is not helpful.

It seems these preachers wanted a reaction and they got one.
try dressing up in tradional muslim clothing and go to a estate and give out muslim material to young boys and girls and you will get the reaction you want as well.
the express will be in the front line with muslims brianwashing our children to become muslims.
personally i would welcome these preachers so that i can ask them do you fast-do you eat pork-do you drink alcohol-do you fornicate and do you pray and see them stumped for a answer.
I asked these questions to a christian who knocked on my door and he went away and never knocked my door again.

the alum rock incident is just a wider intolerance that is directed towards muslim communities, for instance the new government initiative that has announced that the Home Office plan is a new national "deradicalisation" programme . the Home Office said the strategy was needed to help bring back those who had "already crossed the line" in terms of ideology and outlook, but not yet committed any clear criminal offence.

the plan includes a suggestion that local councils should map their areas religion, surveying and recording the faiths and denominations of local residents.

the Home Office has told councils they must be prepared to ask police to vet anyone involved in projects that receive government anti-radicalisation funding.

the new guidance to local authorities also sets out a range of factors, based on case histories of those involved in past terrorist attacks, that may leave a person more susceptible to exploitation by violent extremists.

the profile includes those who have experienced trauma through migration or asylum; those who have gone through a personal crisis such as divorce, family estrangement or time spent in prison; and those frustrated by having a job way below their perceived skills or education.

so now you might be targeted because you fit a profile, and whilst you will not have comited any criminal act you could be subjected to a government 'deradicalisation' process.

if anyone is in any doubt the attempt to extend detention without charge to 42 days effectively brings internment to the uk mainland and its primary target is muslim community, not just islamo-zionists but ordinary muslims. and further the government intends to profile muslims , to the extent to where muslims live and despite not having commited any criminal act will take action for muslims to be 'deradicalised'.

all of this because of the governments failure to acknowledge the fact that the major cause of radicalisation has been and will continue to be its decision to start an illegal war in iraq and the one real solution it has in its gift is to withdraw its troops today.

so maybe muslims do need to be wary of the intent of those that arrive in their locality creating angst and dischord.

Bishop Michael Nazir Ali and his friends in the CoE are specifically targeting youngsters to convert them because of his own hatred of Muslims.

Not long ago this same Bishop Ali made a statement that the christians were not doing enough to convert Muslims to christianity and yet he quoted that in a decade some 50000 Christians had reverted to Islam - this scares the pants of him... so its going to be common practise where christians will try to push christianity to Muslim youth - what they fail to realise is - The Muslim youth have been seen alot of hatred towards Islam and they'll see those who talk christianity to them as an insult. And as for the coppers - had it been a couple of Muslims trying to pass of Islam - they would have been arrested...

they left a pigs head and wrote on the walls leave now with a picture of a cross painted next to it.
i wish to know what islamophobic bigots think about factual acts of no go areas and not mere allegations.
this can be checked on BBC news website.
