Israel has Crossed a Moral Boundary

Rabbi Michael Lerner

In 2003 I was prevented from speaking at a large demonstration protesting the impending war in Iraq because I was deemed too pro-Zionist by one of the sponsoring organizations. My sin then, as now, is that I believe that both sides have acted with insensitivity and have been oblivious to the needs of the other, and both sides need to repent.

I still believe that now, and as late as last week was calling on the tens of thousands of readers of http://www.tikkun.org to insist to the Palestinians that they would be far more effective if they were to adopt the non-violent strategies of Gandhi, King, and Mandela rather than to imagine themselves capable of militarily defeating Israel. And just as I’ve critiqued the state terrorism against civilians that the IDF brings to the West Bank occupation, so I’ve always critiqued the terrorism of some sectors of the Palestinian population.

But this week it’s impossible as a Jew and as an American to not notice that a new human rights violation by Israel has taken place which manages to surpass many of its previous violations in cruelty and in the outrage it has generated.

Anyone has ever faced the crippling heat of the desert-like conditions of southern Israel or the Gaza strip knows the desperation for water that comes each summer. So when Israel bombed and destroyed the electricity system for 1.2 million Gazans and thereby made all electric pumps inoperable, they inflicted a collective punishment on the entire Gazan population.

The alleged justification was a desire to punish Palestinians for electing a Hamas government, and more immediately to retrieve a soldier who had been “kidnapped” (the quotes because this was not a civilian but a soldier in uniform, so if Israel sees itself as at war with Hamas, then the only possible description is that their soldier was captured by the other side). The Hamas government, however, has publicly urged the “kidnappers” whom it does not control to free the captured soldier.

Moreover, the outrage in Israel about this “kidnap” reflects a huge level of systematic denial going on in the consciousness of Israelis and many who support its policies—because virtually every human rights group including the various Israeli human rights organizations has chronicled tens of thousands of acts of “kidnap” of this sort by the IDF against Palestinian civilians, who are then kept in detention for as long as six months without a trial, often facing brutal torture, and then released without ever having been charged with any crime. Of course, and I thank God for this because I care for the well being of the people of Israel , and as a Jew I am deeply tied to the success and safety of this particular Jewish society, the Palestinians have never been able to punish hundreds of thousands or millions of Israelis collectively for these systematic violations of human rights. To the extent that they do so through acts of terror, I condemn those acts.

This is a defining moment in our relationship with Israel for all Americans of whatever faith. Just as we need to make clear to our own government that its human rights violations in Guantanamo and Iraq are unacceptable, so we need to communicate to the Israeli people that the mass punishment of a million people for the acts of a few is as unacceptable when it comes from a democratic society as when it comes from the willful oppression of entrenched authoritarian dictators. Even if, God forbid, the captured soldier is murdered by the lunatics who captured him, it is only they and their conscious sponsors who should be punished, not random Palestinians, unless you think it equally appropriate to some day punish the entire American public for the three million Vietnamese killed by American action in Vietnam or for the horrendous acts which continue in Guantanamo and Iraq even today.

Unfortunately, we can’t count on our U.S. government to convey this sentiment without qualifying its concerns in ways that essentially communicate that Israel can do whatever it wants and we won’t interfere.

So the onus is upon us as ordinary citizens to act and act decisively. We need to communicate our concerns to legislators and media. We need to organize demonstrations in front of the offices of our elected officials, and also outside Israeli consulates and those Jewish institutions which continue to use their influence to support Israeli policy even at this moment (there are a few which have spoken out in critique, but very very few). And we need to write to those in power in Israel, starting with Prime Minister Olmert, telling them that even those of us who love Israel and will never let it be destroyed find this particular action unconscionable, demand that Israel immediately rebuild the electricity system, and that Israel stop trying to impose its will with military might but instead sit down with the Palestinians and negotiate a lasting peace.

Rabbi Michael Lerner is editor of Tikkun magazine, the largest circulation liberal/progressive Jewish magazine in the world. He is rabbi of Beyt Tikkun synagogue in San Francisco, national chair of The Network of Spiritual Progressives , and the author of ten books, most recently a 2006 national best-seller The Left Hand of God: Taking Back our Country from the Religious Right.

Whilst the views of this noble person are undoubtedly laudable, and his words will have influence, it will take an awful lot of unravelling of Israeli influence which has now utterly threaded into the fabric of American society/politics.

Indeed U.S.A. could perhaps, with justification stand for 'Under Semitic Administration'.

What the Palestinians need first and foremost, is to be given a fair hearing: a voice. I believe that this alone will bring atleast a lull, if not a complete stop to violence.

Ghandi,Mandela and King all had platforms from which their grievances could be heard. But world media has perhaps got bored with the Israel/Palestine issue.

So no one hears of the atrocities daily perpetrated against that captive people.

A noble American Rabbi indeed! Now, how about a noble American Mullah stepping forward to call on Hezbollah and Hamas to stop shooting rockets at Israeli civilians!

The Jewish state needs to learn what symmetrical warfare means. This means that you do to the Jewish state what it has done to others. You invade it, put it's people into refugee camps, and them bomb them by land, sea and air. Only then will justice be done.

The Road to Damascus: Quote

Whenever the US supports Israel in its genocidal acts against Muslims, it only shoots itself in the foot further, politically, militarily and ideologically. The Bush administration Zionists realise that the attacks in Iraq, Afghanistan and the rest of the world are not because Muslims hate America, but because they hate Israel's sponsor...

The more repression, hate and anger that the Americans create against themselves for supporting Israel, the bigger will the be the payback exacted from America and the more the Zionist lobby's machinations will be resented by the ordinary public in the UK and the US.
This also includes the stooges that Zionism is using in the Saudi Royal house for example to criticize Hezbollah as a "Shia" organisation whilst the peace-loving tinpot CIA dictators watch as Palestinian and Lebanese Muslims are slaughtered in increasing numbers only a few miles away from the borders of Kuwait and Saudi Arabia....

We could say that Israel has now started losing this fight. But we do now know that the road to Damascus has been destroyed by the Zionists. There will be no more friendships and conversion to Christianity as there used to be on the road to Damascus. What the murderers have sown for many centuries, they have just started reaping. Ameen.

I think, people tend to get caught up with alot of micro issues, like why they hitting us with rockets, and why are they commiting suicide bombings on ISRAELI CITIZENS etc.

What people forget is that :

ISRAEL is ILLEGALLY occuppying LAND. Its policies are colonial, its a coloniser.

This illegal activity can never be made legitmite. They have to return to the 1967 Borders. This is what happens to Colonisers, they get bombed, they get attacked/ Every Nation which has illegally occuppied LAND, wheather it is the FRENCH or the British in india, have had to FACE DEFEAT.

Why do peole forget this ?/ Why cant the average "joe" seem to understand this. If someone takes your LAND, and dumps you in a refugee CAMP, its psychological and inevitable, you will use WHATEVER MEANS is AVAILABLE to defeat your ENEMY.

WHEN IS ISRAEL GOING TO GO BACK TO ITS 1967 BORDERS, CAN ANYY SUPPORTER OF ISRAEL ANSWER THAT ?. IF IT DOESNT, THEN ATTACKS IN WHATEVER MEANS AND CAPACITY ARE INEVITABLE AND JUSTIFYED!!!!

You can call the "Freedom Fighters", :::: terrorists, Islamists, Jihadis, blah, blah, blah. Manipulate the context, the Scenarios etc etc. BUT

The Bottomline is : IF YOU INVADE illegally, One day you have to take a KICK in the teeth, and BE MADE to LEAVE !!!!!!. If its never been or was yours, it will never become YOURS no whatever hardship you ENDURE.

ISRAEL : GET OUT !!!!!, and leave our LANDS. You have overstayed your "Hospitality" as a "GUEST".

Israel is not interested in peace and will use any means to justify the genocide and ethnic cleansing of the Palestinians and Arabs. I wonder if their plan for a Greater Israel is underfoot? How can Indian peacekeepers be stationed on the Golan Heights when they work hand in hand with the Israeli soldiers? Palestinians are the victims who are further victimized by the media and the deafening silence by the world at large is an outrage. The plight of the Palestinians must be brought to the forefront and the apartheid policies of Israel dismantled. How could there be peace when Israel wants the annihilation of the Palestinians, commits acts of barbarism and butchery, uses collective punishment of the entire population, demolishes homes and brings and devastation to the Palestinians. Israel is not only an apartheid state, it is an expansionist state - a state that must be halted.

Mohsin repeats two misconceptions in his contribution.
1. Israel is not "illegally" occupying the West Bank, were it doing so then it would be easy to get it before the International Court. Israel's occupation of the West Bank arises out of the 1967 war in which Jordan, then rulers of the West Bank, attacked Israel - despite Israel's request that it stay out of the conflict. UN resolution called upon Israel withdraw from "territories occupied" and for the direct & indirect belligerents on the Arab side to recognise Israel as a nation state. The Arab states said "No!". Not until Oslo was there any real movement. Under Oslo etc the Palestinians agreed to recognise Israel in return for the Israelis pulling out. Unfortunately boths sides failed to keep to their commitments, and the present Palestinian government is explicitly opposed to 242 & Oslo, and any recognition of Israel.
2. The Olmert government proposes withdrawing from most of the West Bank and taking out most of the settlements, int he same manner as the Sharon govt did in Gaza. This unilateral decision is in response to the Palestinians failure to work within the Oslo frameworks. Although the Palestinians would not get back the Old City of Jerusalem and some adjacent areas, they would end up with the bulk of the territory, and additional territory has been offered by Israel to compensate any loses and to make the border more manageable.
However it is irrelevant whether Israel withdraws from 80%, 90% or 100% of the areas captured in 1967 if Palestine does not seek to establish stable government capable of engaging with Israel as a neighbouring state. As has been made clear to the Palestinians no nation nor the UN will attempt to force Israel to open its borders to Palestinian trade and people. If Palestine does not resolve this then Israel can simply close its borders to Palestine and deny Palestinians the opportunity to access EU & US export markets through Israel port facilities. Further Israel can legitimately deny to the Palestinians the opportunity to work in Israel. These two elements would destroy any chance of a successful Palestinian state coming into being,a nd almost certainly chaos and civil war would ensue. Jordan and Egypt are also very reluctant to allow Palestinians free movement over their borders with Gaza and the West Bank.
Thus unless the Palestinians cease reverting to war, and seek out peaceful civil solutions, it is highly likely that whatever the minor details Palestine will become little more than a massive prison, and the UN will deem that Israel has complied with 242.

Re: Annezee.
In the early 1990's 70% of Israelis voted for peace and withdrawl from the Occupied Territories. If you care to search it out, they envisioned a future of open borders and co-operation. Unfortunately Arafat frittered away this desire for peace.
The Israeli Peace Movement is a shadow of its former self simply because it lost all credibility in the face of the PLO's reversion to military action when Arafat couldn't get what he wanted.
There is a desperate need to get back to the position where the majority of Israelis vote for peace and co-existance where the Palestinians can have hope for a bright future.
If Hamas and its allies were to stop the shooting, the Israelis would follow suit. But expecting the Israelis to ignore the violence is unrealistic.
If the Palestinians want open borders, access to Israel markets and use of their ports then they must cease posing a threat to Israelis. The Palestinians simply cannot have it both ways.

To R davies

Mohsin is correct

Israel does illegally occupy the west bank eventhough it claims it has widrawn its military force. the international court in geneva recoqnises israel as carrying out illegal activities and breaking hundreds of UN resolution, but nothing is done because it is supported by the zionists in America.

The state if israel is also founded illegally. The whole area of israel was once Palestine not too long ago. The arab people in that region were forced out of their homes by zionists, hence they established the state of israel by force. ISRAEL IS STILL PALESTINIAN LAND!!!

If israel has used military force to re-capture just three of their soldiers, then the palestinians and their supporters have every right to use what ever force is appropiate to release thousands of INNOCENT civilians captured by israel.

May ALLAH make the muslims all around the world successfull and help establish the khalifah.

Ameen.
