274555_beyazit_mosque_istanbul.jpg Today we were out leafleting for our forthcoming Manchester Event and as we were busy handing out leaflets and promoting it to our Muslims brethren, one thing became clear…many of the people we spoke to (brothers and sisters alike) had an aversion about going to the mosque, here are some the comments we came across..

“There aren’t any facilities for sisters”

“Apart from jamat time, it’s usually shut”

“They’re not suitable for children, usually they get scowled at if they misbehave and well you know what kids are like”

“None of the elders encourage us to go, they act like they own the place”

“I just don’t feel welcome”

These were some of the standard replies that we came across; we did ask why they didn’t try to speak with the imam of the mosque. Most shrugged their shoulders or just felt too intimidated about raising the issue with them. This is just one of the signs which highlight current Muslim apathy towards our leaders and our institutions, without getting people to re-connect within their own community, how can we possibly get them to connect with wider society?

A few yards away we saw some kids loitering around the area next to the mosque, they were playing a game of football in the street and generally putting the wind up local residents. We just thought wouldn’t it be better if the mosque car park was opened up so that these kids could have a kick about and at the same time become encouraged to find out about the deen?

Or there is the other non-option of doing nothing and letting things get worse until the mosques become so defunct and lifeless  that they serve no purpose other than to make us incur the wrath of Allah leading us straight to hell.

Isn't is inevitable that a large majority of british muslims will end up like british christians - ie non-worshipping and only paying lip service to their belief?

Actually, outside artificial gatherings like this website, hasn't this started to happen already?

Attempts to attract people to empty churches have pretty much failed so I doubt anymore success will be had with emptying mosques.
