| GLA Candidate Writes to MPACUK |

I must commend and congratulate MPAC, firstly, for their relentless single minded campaign to encourage Muslims to vote and participate in the political process. Secondly, in recognising the fact that Ken Livingstone is the best choice for London and in particular the Muslim community, and highlighting the dangers of a win for the Tory Boris Johnson. However, I would like to take issue with the approach, and method of this campaign.
The leaflet which compares the two Mayoral candidates has two problems;
firstly, it is misleading. Secondly, in trying to back Ken, MPAC are
inadvertently, supporting New Labour in two ways:
2. The leaflet is factually incorrect. There is a striking difference
between Ken and New Labour on all three issues which the two candidates
are being compared on.
Ken may be an outspoken defender of Muslims, but you will be hard
pressed to find anyone worth their name within the New Labour
administration who will stick their necks out defending Muslims even
when it is unpopular. The classic case is when Jack Straw attacked
Muslim women’s right to wear the nikab. It does not matter what opinion
you have on the actual nikab, every Muslim woman has the right,
religious, political, spiritual and moral, to wear it if they so
choose. I remember, how politicians from all persuasions were, (except
Respect, of course) bending over backwards to join the ‘Muslim bashing’.
Hardly a policy of New Labour which took us into an illegal war, and is
finding £3.2 billion a year on it, while in the same breath telling
people there is no money for public services!
What can I say? Do I need to say anything? Recently when 100 civilians
were killed by Israeli aggression in one single attack, David
Milliband, Foreign Secretary came out and argued why Israel has the
right to defend itself. Come to think of it, when was the last time any
politician of any party, made even a proportionate criticism of both
sides in the conflict, let alone sympathise with the innocent
Palestinians being murdered by Israel on a daily basis? Respect candidate for the City & East London constituency for the GLA Readers have left 15 comments.

Excellent article! I live in east london (newham) and i will be supporting Cllr Hanif Abdulmuhit, as respect is the only alternative to new labour and their anti-muslim agenda.
Also the fact that i have seen in newham for the last 2 years how Cllr Hanif Abdulmuhit and the other 2 respect cllr's work so hard and defend the community - muslim and non-muslim. If anyoe wants to see for them selves, just come to one, of the council meetings in the town hall and see from the public gallery the difference between the respect cllr's and the new labour SHEEP (incl. the so called muslim cllr's).

Some very crucial points made here which is that yes, by all means vote for Ken as London Mayor, but don't vote for Labour!
I would go further and say that those rebounding from Labour to the Conservative party are really missing the point, you just need to take a look at their candidate Boris Johnson to understand why. Vote on Thursday, but vote wisely. If I lived in a Respect constituency I certainly would vote for them.

Yes I second the comments made by the last person. We must not make a mistake by thinking that New Labour and Ken are the same as they are not. So although we support Ken, we should not be vote for New Labour.
So my vote in the City and East will be for Respect No1 and No11 and Ken for Mayor.

Respect is an ironic name since you jihadis deserve none. Islamophobia is a non-existent condition. Westerners are rightfully wary of Islam.

Whenever I hear cynics complaining that politicians nowadays are all in hock to vested interests and unprepared to show leadership, I respond with two words: Ken Livingstone. London’s mayor has made the UK’s capital a world leader on environmental and transport issues – often in the teeth of determined opposition from the media and the political Establishment. If he loses the 1 May election to the charming Tory buffoon Boris Johnson, it will be a tragedy both for London and for global environmental politics as a whole.
Ken is that rare thing in today’s world: a politician who is prepared to lead rather than follow public opinion. If the congestion charge had been put through new Labour’s focus groups it would never have happened. Opinion polls were dead set against the scheme right up until it became a success, at which point most people switched allegiances or argued that they had actually been in favour all along. In 2004, the Conservative Party’s mayoral candidate, Steven Norris, pledged to abolish the congestion charge – and lost. Now, even Boris says he wants to retain the scheme, although in what form remains unclear. The progress of the congestion charge has been keenly watched from abroad: New York’s mayor, Michael Bloomberg, is planning to introduce a similar scheme in Manhattan. Livingstone has been much attacked – particularly by such critics as the London Evening Standard and the NS’s Martin Bright. But Livingstone is by far the best-qualified candidate to run London – and from an environmental perspec tive, this is even more the case. While Johnson is on record as opposing the Kyoto Protocol – as the Green candidate, Siân Berry, has repeatedly pointed out – Livingstone helped bring together big cities in the United States to keep the Kyoto flame alive during George Bush’s disastrous presidential reign. Livingstone has forged partnerships on all sides. His London Energy Services Company, which aims to make decentralised energy solutions mainstream across Greater London, is a partnership with EDF Energy, whose parent company operates nearly 60 nuclear reactors in France (Ken is strongly anti-nuclear).

Peace has never come from dropping bombs. Real peace comes from enlightenment and educating people to behave more in a divine manner.
That just one reason why I will be voting Respect on the 1st May. It's time to deduce inferences from fact, and to distinguish between right from wrong.

It is nice fo you to accomodate this letter from the Respect candidate. You failed to publish my comments about this a few weeks ago. I hope you publish this?
New Labour and the other parties are all the same. In East London, only Respect is challenging the warmongers, and can beat them. So I urge all who live in East London, or if you know people in East London please ask them to vote for Hanif Abdulmuhit, Respect candidate, 1 on the yellow ballot. For a real voice for East Enders. Ken for Mayor, Galloway for London and Hanif for East London - the winning team for East London!
