The Mosques united the Muslims and their efforts. The Mosques refined our souls and awakened our hearts. The Mosques showed our strength and cohesiveness. The word of truth emanated from the Mosques. Forbidding evil and enjoining good.
Remember how the mosques were the center of the nationalist movement against the French occupation?
Remember the great men of Islam that came from the mosques, rushing to fill the earth with Allah’s guidance? Remember where the seeds of Islamic civilisation grew and developed? The mosque was therefore not just a place for prayer and Islamic rituals - it was used as a centre point for the Muslims from where they conducted their affairs. How many mosques are doing that today? Bring back the Mega Mosque Today Mosques are multi million pound infrastructures but they have been reduced to mere prayer halls. Today the ‘Mega’ Mosque will be a beautiful building but does it really deserve its name of ‘Mega’? Doesn’t ‘Mega’ just refer to its size and the money it took to build it? Yes MPACUK wants the Mega Mosque back. Not the ‘Mega Mosque’ of today but the true Mega Mosque, the Mosque that was more worthy of its name. Why have the Mosques been crippled and not playing their great role today? Join us for groundbreaking talks and workshop or are you too afraid to hear the truth?on:Saturday, 24th May in Manchester“And who is worse in oppression than the one who prevents the name of Allah being mentioned in the Masaajid of Allah, and works to destroy them?” [ Al-Baqarah: 114]. 1:30-5:00pm

If you want a mega mosque why don't you collect some money and build one?
No-one is stopping you. Apparently you get 1 million hits per month - surely you can get a few half shillings together to build a mosque. 1500 years ago, at a time when Islam was at the height of its strength, Muslims were humble people yet they offered so much. They didn't whinge and moan about what other people did: they just got on with it. So get off your computers and get on with it MPAC. I'm sick of e-muslims.

The only spirits a 'Mega Mosque' is going to reawaken are those of the BNP and rightwingers who will feed off the thoughts of the many Britons who feel strongly that these structures are the threat that immigration poses to their culture and way of life.
Their hatred will then focus on to us, if not now then in the future. We don't need any more hatred towards us. We ignore this at our peril.

Both of the commentators above seem to have missed the point of the article.
MPAC aren't calling for a mega-mosque where mega refers to size, but rather it refers to the *services* the mosque will carry out.

I hope this means that MPAC will stop its absurd opposition to the mega-mosque in east london, which is supported by a host of the most odious right wing, zionist and anti-islamic organisations.
Rather than calling for its ban, it should use this opportunity to contact and work with those behind the mosque to constructively engage with them and recommend ideas for using the mosque as a real cultural centre of excellence, that would show real leadership rather than taking the easy and misguided action of attacking its construction.

MPAC are wrong on lots of things, including muslims joining political parties is fard, but on the mosque - THEY ARE RIGHT! I am well aware what the article is driving at. However if you read my comment properly, you would have understood my point, which obviously you haven't, that rather than acting in a politically naive and reactionary manner that plays into the hands of anti-islamic bigots, MPAC should drop its opposition to the mosque, and actually work with the mosque leadership in a constructive manner, to try and implement its proposals for improvement. So in plain terms, MPAC is wrong about its opposition to the mega-mosque.There are undoubtedly issues with the mosque leadership in the U.K., indeed their 'no politics in the mosque' approach is certainly one of them, but as to the way to tackle it, is not to be part of a campaign that alongside vicious anti-Islamic groups , calls for a ban on the building of a house of worship.

Dear Khadijah,
That's exactly my point! There is no way I would give MPAC any money to build a mosque. Cos they haven't got a clue. I do actually get off my back and do stuff, so don't assume I don't. I just hate e-muslims who just sit back and complain. If YOU want a mosque, build one or buy a house and convert it. Its not hard.

1500 years ago, at a time when Islam was at the height of its strength, Mosques were humble buildings yet they offered so much. When the prophet arrived in Madinah the first thing he did was build a Mosque. This indicates the importance of a Mosque in Islam.
