london_mayoral_election_2008.png For Muslims in London it's make or break time.

There are hundreds of thousands of Muslims in London. Come Thursday 1st of May 2008, what will YOU be doing?

Just another day at work, university or college, sitting around with a plate of samosas in your front room talking about what a mess the Muslim world is in?

Guess what I’ll be doing that day?

...visiting my local polling station and putting my vote in for the next Mayor of London.

London Mayoral Election, May 1st 2008

You may not be aware that this is the day that YOU get to choose who becomes the next Mayor of London.

Some people will approach this with the same apathy with which they approach the plight of the Ummah. The attitude of WHY should I bother voting, its not going to make any difference.

Well let me tell you why…

For starters, the Mayor's role as the executive of the strategic authority for London is 'to promote economic development and wealth creation, social development, and the improvement of the environment'. The Mayor of London directly impacts on YOUR life.

This is the opportunity for Muslims living in London to have a real say on issues that are key to them, and to have an influence on policies that will affect their daily lives.

May 1st is your make or break chance to decide who holds one of the most powerful positions in politics. Most importantly the contrast between the men competing for this job could hardly be greater.

Over the coming weeks, we here at MPACUK will be keeping you up-to-date on the battle for the stewardship of London.

Can I Vote?

To vote you must:

• Live in London.
• Be a British, Commonwealth or EU citizen.
• Be at least 18 years of age on election day.

How Do I Vote?

• In Person at a polling station.
• By Post.

How Do I Register To Vote?

Make sure nothing stops you if you would like to make your mark on the way London is run.

If you are not on the electoral register you cannot vote.

Only registered voters can vote in the elections on 1 May 2008.

To register, you need to fill in a simple form, giving your name, nationality and address.

Once you've filled in this form, send it to your local borough's elections office.

To vote in the London elections you must be registered by 16 April 2008.

Paying council tax will not automatically include you on the electoral register.

Download a registration form here or contact your local borough's elections office .

I'd find it hard to give Ken my first vote after all that his party are responsible for (and after his support for the police after the murder of Jean Charles) but I will give him my second vote and give Lindsey German, convenor of Stop the War, my first vote.

If everyone gives Ken their second vote he is safe and Boris can't get in - so you can still send an anti-war message by giving the anti-war candidate your first vote, as I will be doing.

It is very important to vote and make a change. Anyone who votes Labour will be voting for more genocide against Muslims. I hope British Muslims vote with their consciences and throw these Labour Muslim haters out of office.
Respect/Liberal/Green/UKIP/Conservative you choose who to mark your X for.
Vote for Labour and the blood of a million dead Iraqis is on YOUR hands.

"Respect/Liberal/Green/UKIP/Conservative you choose who to mark you X for."

But it was the Conservatives that helped Labour go to war! The Conservatives are just as warmongering and pro-Israel as the Labour party - that is no secret.

UKIP are an extremely right-wing party who want to close all borders - I went to a hustings a few years ago and the UKIP candidate was saying how all drugs and crime are the fault of immigrants!

If you are genuinely anti-war, give your first vote to Lindsey German who has been more active in opposing Labour's warmongeing than any other candidate. Vote with your conscience. I personally will hold my nose and give my second vote to Ken (remember you have two votes), as I really do not want Boris Johnson as mayor.

It is also important that as many people get out and vote as possible to keep the fascist BNP out of the GLA. We do not want to wake up on May 2nd with fascists on the GLA!

DANGER!!!

Unless we want Boris Johnson the Zionist Islamophobe as Mayor WE MUST VOTE KEN LIVINGSTONE!

A vote for anyone else will let Boris Johnson get into power - if Johnson got over 50% of the first preference votes then second preference votes would not be counted at all. DON'T be fooled by the loony left fringe candidates - it's a choice between Ken Livingstone and Boris Johnson. And I know who I would rather have as Mayor!

Whatever we choose it should be on the basis of the benefit to London and its inhabitants. The Mayor and London Assembly have little or no impact upon national politics, but they do have an impact upon the issues that affect our daily lives. To use regional / local elections as a platform to protest international issues is a mistake because we end up with administrations that are less in interested in the realities of living in London and more interested in placating various communities external interests. There are too many important issues going on to allow our voices to be frittered away in pointless activity.

The 'loony left'? Is that how you would describe those who have done so much to oppose this government's and Israel's warmongering over the last 6 years? Those who have fought against the rising tide of Islamophobia? Those who have opposed Guantanamo Bay and Belmarsh?

Voting for the anti-war candidate will NOT let Boris Johnson in considering that we have 2 votes. It seems that it is you that people should not be 'fooled by'.

Interesting how you have not picked up on the poster who has asked people to vote for any other party other than Labour, and instead have targetted the so-called 'loony left' poster.

I wonder what you real agenda is here? There is no 'danger' of Boris getting in as long as people give their second vote to Ken, and yet you are for some reason trying to hide this fact. Anyone using the smear 'loony left' is to be mistrusted. Do you have a similar term for those on the right - those who promote war and racism - do we? I doubt it.

Can Tahira define the 'loony left'? It is the 'loony left' that are the ones that expose the warmongers, racists, Islamophobes and zionists and do most work to oppose these things.

And in case Tahira didn't realise, we get two votes in the Mayoral election, so no, voting for Lindsey German will NOT let Boris in. That's a complete fallacy.

I'll define the Looney left as the Respect Party.

Oh no - which Respect Party? It's split into two: Respect Renewal & Respect Coalition ?

Well the answer is both of 'em and in particular the one with the SWP at the helm.

Red Ken is the only viable and serious Pro-Palestinian option.

If Boris gets more than 50% of the votes then he will be the mayor and second preference votes for Ken will not count for anything - and won't save us from that right-wing nutter! I repeat - WARNING: Unless you actually want Boris Johnson to be Mayor of London, you must vote for Ken Livingstone first.

As for the loony left, I never said their hearts aren't in the right place! Problem is they have no understanding of the reality of power, and so only contribute to further marginalising Muslims.

Tahira, you talk as if the 'loony left' (a term which I have not heard since the incredibly reactionary Thatcher era) is manipulating Muslims. Many Muslims are active in these so-called 'loony left' groups themselves (many are leading voices in these groups), as they see the mainstream parties as hypocritical and dangerous. Ken Livingstone for example is seen as a great anti-racist and opposer of imperialism, but it is people like him that are keeping people tied to his party - the very party that is responsible for more wars and killing of Muslims than we have seen in modern history! It is Ken that has stood solidly by the police, even saying that 'Al Qaeda must be laughing at us as as we pilorise the police that keep us safe'. That's something you'd expect to see in the tabloids, not something you'd expect from 'Red Ken' (or 'loony left Ken' as he used to be called, ironically).

The 'loony left' is growing precisely because so many people see through the Labour party now. 200,000 Labour members have left in the last few years, halving their membership. Those people certainly are not 'loony' but horrified by Labour's wars and stoking of racism and Islamophobia.

Obviously we don't want Boris in but unlike every other election we have TWO votes. Boris has no chance of winning on first votes only therefore if everyone gives Ken their second vote then he will be SAFE.

And really, you should be lucky that Lindsey German voters are not only giving Ken their second vote, but also encourging others to do this. There are many people - for example refik who has posted here - who will not vote Ken at all, and quite understandably too.

So really, Ken is lucky that those that oppose war can even bring themselves to vote for him as their second choice. Ken supporters should be encouraging this, not smearing those who are most active against war and racism.

I have read alot of silly comments here.
The Conservatives cannot be blamed for Labour's wars.
Dont forget more than half of all Labour MPs are committed zionists.
Boris Johnson is Turkish and his family were Muslims. He is going to be a darn sight better than the crooked Livingstone who has been embezzeling money.
All of you who despite everything are still going to vote Labour deserve everything Labour is doing to us. I would not vote Labour even if i was held at gunpoint.
For me Boris first, Sian Berry second. And my conscience is clear.

If Haidar thinks the Conservatives are anything other than equally imperialist, equally war-hungry and equally racist, then that's one very naive person. No disrespect but they ain't called the 'nasty party' for nothing. Have you not been keeping up over the last few years? Or maybe they are spinning for the Tories.

For me: Lindsey German #1 and Ken (holding my nose admittedly) #2.

I want to make it very clear Lindsey German is not standing for Respect. Respect (George Galloway) is backing Ken. But please remember just coz you vote Ken you don't need to vote for New Labour, who are the party of war. You will have 3 votes. For the Mayor vote Ken for all the good reasons above. For the Party list vote for Galloway who is number 1 on the Respect party list, as he is standing and will be a strong ally of Ken if elected, Respect (George Galloway) and those who live in City & East constituency vote for anti-war Respect candidate from Newham Cllr Hanif Abdulmuhit -Respect (George Galloway) and not the new Labour guy who is no better than the rest!

Wooooo! Hold your horse’s pips! People who are having a go at red-ken for being labour are being equally disingenuous. Ken is just affiliated with Labour, voting him in will not really benefit labour. Vote Ken for his views about Muslims and Islam, which is a darn site better than Boris' - the man who says its natural to be islmophobic' says 'islam is the problem' and says quran is violent.

...yes in an ideal world voting for say 'respect' would be better. but since ken and boris are neck -and-neck, it makes sense to vote ken and not leave anything to chance
