Tuesday, 26 February 2008

clareprofile4.jpg Clare Short MP for Ladywood, in Birmingham, joins sisters Samina, Safia and Sabah from the MPACUK Birmingham Branch, to talk about issues affecting British Muslims today, from her experiences as a Birmingham born Catholic to her opinon on Palestine, Islamophobia, the importance of voting and her take on Bishop Ali-Nazir's comments on ‘no go areas’

Clare Short, a colourful figure throughout her career, who always spoke out against the injustices happening in Palestine, served as Secretary of State for International Development from 1997 until her resignation from the Cabinet over the war in Iraq in 2003. In 2006, she resigned the Labour whip. She now sits as an Independent.

Clare Short is also the author of the award winning book “An Honourable Deception? New Labour, Iraq, and the Misuse of Power”, published in an attempt to explain why Tony Blair did what he did on Iraq, to uphold the hope that lessons could be learned and things put right.

I thought Clare Short's answers were very thoughtful and it was very encouraging to hear an MP who is making the effort to engage in dialogue with local Muslims. Great initiative from the MPACUK sisters - when are we going to hear some interviews from MPs in other areas as well as Birmingham?

Great to hear a politician interviewed by young Muslim sisters, rather than just by the likes of Jeremy Paxman!

I was very impressed with her answers, especially on the double-standards in policy toward Israel and the crisis in Gaza.

fantastic interview MPACUK, and even better replies from Clare Short, especially about no-go areas! This is something that all muslims should engage in.

Clare voted for the Iraq war as an MP and sat in the war Cabinet because she thought she would get a good job out of it.

Now she's eager to blame it all on Israel (which advised against) and US Jews (who voted en masse against Bush).

Muslims should not buy it.

Israel was the reason Iraq was attacked. Read Scott Ritters book the chief weapons inspector called Target Iran. Also well worth looking at the Israel lobby video on the MPAC site top left if you want further proof.

Paul your simply not credible.

Excellent interview. Well done MPAC.

I particularly like the fact that this was done by sisters.

The more the sisters get involved, the higher the standards will rise, for the Ummah as a whole.

Great interview, think rare to see a straightforward politician.

Know she voted for Iraq war, this is an issue for most of us, but overall she has worked tirelessly to support Palestinians more so than most muslims.

As for Israel being against Iraq invasion, Dick Cheney, Richard Perlman; Ronald Rumsfeld and the the other fundamentalist zionists were the architects behind the invasion and their only interests are Israel's 'security' and oil.

Par for the course, Short deliberately misleads and has an extremely inventive mind when it comes to Israel. firstly she equates the Gaza/Israel conflict to a football match, stating more Arabs have died than Israelis. That is in no way due to the daily rocket attacks from Gaza missing the intended targets (albeit indiscriminate firing)then,Israel does target known terorists but sometimes unfortunately, children and 'civilians' are killed. All the fault of those gastly Israelis all the fault of those crazy Israelis having the temerity to defend themselves. Why does she not equally condem the indiscriminate daily rocket barrages aimed at the civillian population, hospitals, schools, homes etc? Why did she not condem the Gaza terrorists for continuing their attacks, from the very day Israel withdrew from Gaza? The decision to rocket was not Israels. Hamas opened this conflict, therefore Israel is not waging an "illegal war" Claire, it is exercising its right of defence as defined in the Geneva convention.
She railed that Israel "does not respect people of all religions". Outrageous lie. all Israelis, Jews, Christians, Mus;ims, Bahis, Hindus etc all have equal religious freedom. Why do Christian Arabs flee from the PA & Gaza, why do Muslim gays flee, all to Israel? Why did the Bahis flee Iran to Israel? They all know
their religious & social beliefs will be
protected, they will be free to practice those beliefs. Contrast this to Gaza, PA & most of the Arab world, Claire.
Instead of pandering to your own perceived victimhood, blaming everyone else for the self inflicted wounds on the community, MPAC would better serve its readership by outing the extremists in its midst. Then the wider populace would have greater respect for you. Go to it!

Aisha. Short is rather short on double standards. Criticism of Israel, 'Yes..., and not a murmer about Hizbollah and Hamas. Has she visited Sderot during the 2500 Kassam missile regome, or imagined what her response would be if her constituency were Sderot? Empty old labour talk!

I find it so disheartening that so many get a thrill out of mealy mouthed words that are meant to give a feel good factor, however the reality lies in the actions undertaken.

when she was in a position to alter the course of history she chose to sit on her hands and condoned the illegal war.

one can only have respect for the likes of the late robin cook who at least stood up to be counted.

It's encouraging to see this initiative take off. How better to integrate into Britain than be part of the political process than out of it.

Great interview. Well done MPAC and Clare Short !

I am looking forward to part 2...

Brillaint Interview - one can clearly see the racist Zionists are back on the attack and upset. It just shows how scared of Muslims integrating into this society and becoming active citizens for justice.

Fight on the MPAC - the more it upsets them - the more you Mujahids must be doing the right thing.
