ACTION ALERT: Humanitarian Crisis in Gaza Print E-mail
Wednesday, 23 January 2008

actionalert.jpgIn early January, Israel ordered more cuts in the diesel supplies having a devastating effect on crucial power and water supplies.

Although Israel has now resumed some diesel supplies, this latest action, added to the long-term ill-effects of months of blockade and decades of occupation, means the 1.5m Palestinians in Gaza are facing the worst humanitarian crisis ever. Over 80 per cent of Gazans are living below the poverty line.

The political, economic and social isolation imposed on the occupied Gaza Strip violates international law and has dire consequences for future peace, development and security in the region.

What You Can Do

Please write to your MP and urge them to do the following:

1) Sign the EDMs* on the situation in Gaza

EDM 698 on Hospitals Supplies in Gaza
That this House notes with extreme concern the report from the Ministry of Health in Gaza that as a result of the Israeli blockade supplies of food and medical equipment are nearly exhausted in the hospitals and clinics in Gaza; and calls upon the Government to take every action possible to ensure the lifting of the blockade and the supply of food and medical equipment to Gaza.

EDM 624 on Civilians in Gaza

EDM 305 on Humanitarian Situation in Gaza
That this House expresses grave concern about the humanitarian situation in Gaza and the decision by the State of Israel to declare it a hostile entity; notes that this further isolated the 1.5 million Palestinian residents of this occupied territory, 1.1 million of whom have to survive on food handouts; further notes that shortages of medical supplies are reported by the United Nations; considers that future Israeli measures could involve cutting off crucial supplies including food, fuel, electricity and water; believes that such measures would not deter the firing of Kassam rockets but would have a devastating effect on the humanitarian situation in Gaza with a detrimental impact on public health; further believes that the continued political and economic isolation of Gaza will jeopardise the prospects for a lasting peace and for any future negotiations to be credible and successful; and therefore calls upon the UK Government to make the strongest possible representations to the Israeli government that such measures are wholly unacceptable and tantamount to collective punishment and a breach of the Fourth Geneva Convention.

2) Write on your behalf to the Foreign Secretary, Rt Hon David Miliband MP, to raise your concerns about the situation in Gaza.

3) Raise a question during the forthcoming International Development (30th Jan) or Foreign affairs (19th Feb) debates in the House of Commons.

- Haaretz probe: Half of Gazans killed by IDF not involved in terror - 14th January
"Israeli security forces killed 810 Palestinians in the Gaza Strip in 2006 and 2007, Shin Bet security service chief Yuval Diskin reported yesterday at the weekly cabinet briefing in Jerusalem. He estimated that some 200 of those killed were not clearly linked to terrorist organizations.

- However, an examination by Haaretz reveals that the number of Palestinians killed by Israeli security forces was 816 during those two years, and that of them, 360 were civilians who were not affiliated with any armed organizations. Data from B'Tselem, the Israeli human rights organization, show that 152 of the casualties were under age 18, and 48 were under the age of 14."

*What is an EDM?
Early day motion (EDM) is a colloquial term for a notice of motion given by a Member for which no date has been fixed for debate. EDMs exist to allow Members to put on record their opinion on a subject and canvass support for it from fellow Members. In effect, the primary function of an EDM is to form a kind of petition that MPs can sign.

It can act as a useful lobbying tool if the EDM gains a large number of signatures.

why I hate Muslims...

Look at the tragic events unfolding in Palestine and not a single responce on this thread, before I watched onthe news a old Palestinian lady in blue running over a broken prion wall to get into Egypt so she could buy food. Before i saw that I thought MPAC was to harsh on Muslims. Now I no your not harsh enough.

And not a single Muslim on this webgroup has responded? Not a single organisation has rallied their members for a march, not a single Mosque has asked their members to lobby their MP.

Muslims are pigs. And Allah's curse is on you for reading or ignoring their desperation and doing nothing about it.

If you read this and aree, your still a pig, until you make sure the Palestinians are not living in a open prision and that they have dignity, freedom and security against that ****ty little county Israel.

Vile Filthy Muslim PIGS!!!!

Oi MPAC you better publish my comments. If you dont I will hold you to account on your own website and on Judgement day.

All the Palestinians need to do is stop shooting rockets and its all over no more blockade no more suffering.

Israel has a responsibility to protect its own civillians and they must do what they need to make sure this happens.

its not complicated, one thing stops and so does the other.

Oh and another thing, most electricity comes from Ashkelon in Israel, ironically one of the Palestinian rocket targets - talk about biting the hand that feeds you!

Bravo. Amazing rhetoric that obviously had a lot of thought put in to it. Glad to see such a productive thing being done to highlight the issue in Gaza right now. I suggest maybe a few more insults and definitely a lot more exclamation marks next time and maybe you'll get the desired impact.

I admit that my level of awareness on what exactly we sitting here in Britain can do about these things directly, but Inshallah this is exactly the kind of thing that'll be addressed in the upcoming media workshops.

In the meantime, my prayers are with the people on the ground in Gaza City and Egypt that are going through this pain.

I agree the situation in Gaza is terrible. I also understand you wanting to highlight the issue.

Somebody within MPACUK or a visitor to this site must have some communication link to Hamas?

To sort this out the people of Gaza need a peace with Israel and negotiate a proper Palestinian state. This must eventually be a change of the borders to incorporate a Palestinian state alongside Israel.

Can people here not lobby Hamas to change their charter and acknowledge Israel's existence, then negotiate a proper peace and border settlement? I support a Palestinian state alongside Israel, the suffering of the Gaza people is terrible and I fear it will only carry on unless a negotiated peace is carried out. Hamas, I fear is the stumbling block. Please someone, talk to Hamas ...
— colin

The stumbling block is Israel showing contempt for International and UN law. If it is truly serious about peace then why has it moved and why does it continue to move large swathes of its population onto the Illegally occupied West Bank into illegal apartheid settlements that no Palestinian is allowed to enter? Why does it call Israel its capital when no country on Earth not even the United States recognises it and considers Jerusalem to be illegally occupied. Why is it that Israel escapes scrutiny when it is the only nation in the Middle East to actually possess Weapons of Mass Destruction?

If Israel truly wants peace then let it abide by International laws like every other proper democratic nation.

Colin are you saying PEace and Freedom loving of Palestiine should talk racist extremist who say the following, and doubt if Britain was occupied by the Nazis as Zionist Occupation of Palestine and they said the same thing you would talk with them:

"If only it would sink into the sea".
Israeli Prime Minister Yitzak Rabin referring to Gaza, just before signing the Oslo Accords.

"I don't know something called International Principles. I vow that I'll burn every Palestinian child (that) will be born in this area. The Palestinian woman and child is more dangerous than the man, because the Palestinian child's existence infers that generations will go on, but the man causes limited danger. I vow that if I was just an Israeli civilian and I met a Palestinian I would burn him and I would make him suffer before killing him. With one hit I've killed 750 Palestinians (in Rafah in 1956). I wanted to encourage my soldiers by raping Arabic girls as the Palestinian women is a slave for Jews, and we do whatever we want to her and nobody tells us what we shall do but we tell others what they shall do." Ariel Sharon, current Prime Minister, in an interview with General Ouze Merham, 1956

We must use terror, assassination, intimidation, land confiscation, and the cutting of all social services to rid the Galilee of its Arab population." David Ben-Gurion , May 1948, to the General Staff.

"Israel should have exploited the repression of the demonstrations in China, when world attention focused on that country, to carry out mass expulsions among the Arabs of the territories." Benjamin Netanyahu: Speech at Bar-Ilan University, 1989

"We must expel Arabs and take their places." David Ben Gurion, 1937, Ben Gurion and the Palestine Arabs, Oxford University Press, 1985.

"We have to kill all the Palestinians unless they are resigned to live here as slaves." Chairman Heilbrun of the Committee for the Re-election of General Shlomo Lahat, the mayor of Tel Aviv, October 1983.

"We must use terror, assassination, intimidation, land confiscation, and the cutting of all social services to rid the Galilee of its Arab population." Israel Koenig, "The Koenig Memorandum"

"The Palestinians are like crocodiles, the more you give them meat, they want more".... Ehud Barak, Prime Minister of Israel at the time - August 28, 2000. Reported in the Jerusalem Post August 30, 2000

"The Palestinians" would be crushed like grasshoppers ... heads smashed against the boulders and walls." Israeli Prime Minister Menahim Begin in a speech to Jewish settlers New York Times April 1, 1988

It's so easy. Much easier than Colin says.
Hamas can continue to call for the destruction of Israel, blame the Jews for everything from the French revolution to WW1 (read their charter - it says Jews not Israelis, so stop whining on about 'they always shout about anti semitism') and continue teaching its children to hate the Jews and the glory of massacring them.

All this is permitted and nobody will give a peep, because it is all we can expect.

They just have to stop firing the rockets, which have rained on Israel every day since the Israelis pulled out.

Stop the rockets and you'll be left alone. Or keep firing them and stop moaning that the other guy hits back.

Colin

You are a disgrace. Yet again you make cheap points ignoring the obvious crimes against humanity.

What you are saying to dying patients in Gaza hospitals, to new-born babies, to pregnant Palestinian women is: you voted for Hamas; now die! Three cheers for Democracy!!

This is the cruelty of the Nazi State that is Israel. How long before this vile monster builds concentration camps for the Palestinians? It is time that the world community said enough is enough: Israel must be expelled from the UN.

Why don't you use your contact with the evil Israelis who seem incapable of common humanity, to stop killing human beings. The repugnant, evil, monsters of Tel Aviv must not be allowed to get away with persecuting human beings any more.

America and Europe must shackle their Frankenstein of a creation (which is a danger to humanity) before it creates any more havoc in the world.

Until all those European emigres, and their desendents (who call themselves 'Israelis', don't you know)are repatriated to Europe or re-settled in Florida/Arizona/Bavaria/Sussex/Burgundy, there is unlikely to be peace in the world.

The Waffen IDF must be stopped in its tracks.

Where are the Israeli 'Schindlers'? Why don't decent Israelis stand up to the Nazis in their midst, as they wish decent Germans ought to have done in the 1930's/1940's?

take your prayers and stick them where the sun dosnt shine, because your prayers are useless and your whinging about my grammer rather then doing something to help Palestine.

This isnt the first time they have been brutalised, and since everyday in prision is a day to much what did your prayers give them? nothing but more tears.

Your not sincere your prayers will never be answered until you do someting and may Allah make you human instead of the pif offal you are.

Joe Smith: Using fabrications to denigrate your enemy is often good propoganda and may be amusing. But ultimately it weakens your own arguments and your credibility. Ariel Sharon was plenty bad enough without inventing rubbish about him.
The repeated reliance here upon exaggeration impedes the progress to a viable peace as it distorts pro-Palestinian thinking and alienates potential Israeli allies.
Ouze Merham is a fictitious character, made out to be a general in the Israeli Defense Forces, who allegedly interviewed Ariel Sharon in 1956. The interview, first appeared on Muslim websites in mid-2001 during the al-Aqsa Intifada, turned out to have been a hoax. Sharon, who was Prime Minister of Israel when the interview appeared in public, never made such an interview and the Israeli army has no record of a general by the name Ouze Merham.
