· Statement of support for London incumbent Prominent Muslim organisations and individuals have pledged to back Ken Livingstone as mayor of London, saying it is in the "best interest" of Muslims to vote for him in this year's elections on May 1. A statement, published today in full on the Guardian's website, praises Livingstone for his continued support of a multicultural society and for protecting Muslim communities against racism and Islamophobia. The 63 signatories include Mohammed Ali, the chief executive of the Islam Channel, which claims to have an audience of millions, Professor Tariq Ramadan and Dilwar Hussain from the London Muslim Centre, part of the East London Mosque. They said: "His stands and policies have constantly championed justice in the Middle East ... freedom for the Palestinians and withdrawal of occupying troops from Iraq; a rare trait of modern-day public figures. He has enhanced London's standing in the world and helped improve the lives of all of the city's communities. "We pledge to continue our support for the mayor on all levels possible in order to secure his staying in office for a third term." Ihtisham Hibatullah from the British Muslim Initiative, which organised the statement, said Livingstone was doing more to help Muslim communities than other mayoral candidates. "He supports religious freedom. He's committed to developing skills of alienated communities and he's doing great work on social cohesion. These signatories are major players; they have reach and come the elections there will be a huge mobilisation of the Muslim vote." Livingstone's criticism of US and UK foreign policy has increased his popularity among Muslims and he has appeared at events such as IslamExpo, which attracts tens of thousands of people every year. The mayor welcomed the statement, saying that London's prosperity and good community relations were based on openness and tolerance. "The fundamental basis of London's openness and choice is that every Londoner should be able to live their life as they freely choose with the sole condition that they do not prevent others doing the same," he said. His courting of Muslim groups and leaders sparked controversy in 2004, when he invited Islamic scholar Yusuf al-Qaradawi to a conference about female students wearing hijab. Among his fiercest critics was gay rights campaigner Peter Tatchell, who condemned the invitation because of al-Qaradawi's support for "female genital mutilation, wife-beating, the execution of homosexuals in Islamic states, the destruction of the Jewish people, the use of suicide bombs against innocent civilians and the blaming of rape victims who do not dress with sufficient modesty". His rival, Conservative candidate Boris Johnson, said he was "not remotely worried" by the statement of support and warned against "divide and rule" politics. "When anything is signed by so-called community leaders I take it with a big pinch of salt," he said. "My grandfather was a Muslim and so was my great-grandfather. I am proud of my Muslim ancestry. But I want to talk about the interests of Londoners. I don't care what religion they are. I want to look after people from all communities." http://politics.guardian.co.uk Readers have left 20 comments.

I as a British Muslim will be voting for Brian Haw in the London Mayoral elections.
He clearly is the best candidate and the ONLY one who is speaking on behalf of Muslims. Labour is the party of war and anyone who votes Labour has the blood of a million dead Muslims on their conscience.

I really hope all the Muslim groups that signed the letter in support of Livingstone support him where it matters with on-the-ground campaigning in our community. But I've yet to hear of another Muslim group going door to door to mobilise the Muslim vote like MPAC did in the last election.
(You've got to watch Operation Muslim Vote if you haven't seen it - it made me realise a few individuals can actually make a difference: http://www.mpacuk.org/content/view/2017/1/) It'll be a crime if we let a racist like Boris Johnson replace one of the strongest friends Muslims have ever had in British politics. We need Livingstone to be able to continue to support British Muslims against Islamophobia and to speak up fearlessly as he always does for the Palestinians. Sadly fringe no-hope anti-war candidates like Brian Haw only split the vote and risk letting Boris Johnson into power.

I think Muslims are committing collective political suicide by not campaigning for Mr Livingstone.
The Zionist lobby is out in force criticizing Mr Livingstone and digging dirt on him even when they cannot find any. I can remember the words of an honest Hindu Mr Ram Jeth Mullani when some Muslim traitors were trying to support BJP " Muslims should not commit suicide

Muslims should support Mr Ken Livingstone who is one of our best friends, in fact the only one apart from George Galloway and ensure that he is voted back into office.
At a time when the Zionist lobby is out in force in defaming and bringing disrepute to Mr Livingstone, it is sad that MPACUK are advertising the Muslim antecedents of Boris Johnson. There are also a number of Jewish supported "dark horses" in the run to divide the Mr Livingstone's vote-bank. Muslims should also ensure that instead of running for Mayor of London, Boris Johnson is locked away in a secure mental asylum--- in Liverpool of course and all the other competitors against Mr Livingstone exposed and discredited .

I would like to know what the Charities Commision have to say and will do about charities endorsing a particular political candidate. I for one intend to ask the Commission.

So how many of these signatories will sacrifice weekends and evenings to campaign door to door?
How many will try to activate the Mosques to activate Muslims to vote? Let's see if Eneyat Bungawalla, Salma Yacoob or Tariq Ramadan will pound the streets of London. Talk is cheap; and blood of Muslims is cheaper if they do nothing more than put pen to paper.

How can any self respecting Muslim ever vote Labour ever again?
And any self hater must know that if they vote for Livingstone they have the blood of a million dead people on their conscience.

Johnson and Livingstone are neck-and-neck in the polls, either of them could win it. No other candidate has a hope of actually winning so its a simple choice - Boris or Ken? Every vote counts... I know which one I'm going to be voting for insh'Allah!

cant say that ive ever liked ken, largely a self serving politician who has taken the ethnic vote and not really served muslims well. as with all politicians they pay lip service nothing more.
ive yet to come across any politician other than galloway who actually stands up for muslims in a manner that a muslim might want to be represented. vote for ken or boris .. you have to be politically naive .. neither will do anything other than the superficial.

I agree that Ken is the best friend the Muslims can have, especially since Boris openly supports Israel and is an ardent Zionist.
However the groups on this list are simply grabbing headlines. They have never been on the street for Ken, never activated the mosques to speak about Ken, in short they are mostly just a bunch of publicity seeking frauds.

This is the one occassion in which I agree with Wendy Mann, Mr. Livingstone has alighted upon virtually every minority group to elicit their support uttering various epithets, and yet does little substantive to further the interests of much more than elites within those communities.
As for his support of the Palestinians, despite his position he seems reluctant to acts as a friend of the ordinary Palestinians and fight for their rights under either the Israeli occpupation or the rule of either Fatah or Hamas. Truly he has voiced admonishment of Israel but so what? He is the senior politician in one of the world's most important and diverse cities, he should able and willing to do more. Instead although he champions the rights of the oppressed in London, he is strangely silent about the Palestinian victims of Palestinian corruption and violence. In failing to say anything substantial he does the Palestinians a disservice and strengthens the hands of their oppressors.

Surely your first duty as citizens of London is to vote for the man who will best serve the interest of the city and all it's residents. The Mayoralty is not a position to be used to champion overseas political causes and should be used to vote for the person who will best serve all of the electorate. Local government is for the residents of that area, and should not be influenced by foreign events. You are Londoners first and foremost in this election!

But Ken is the mouthpiece for a party that has murdered more than a million Muslims in a few short years so I don't quite understand what you're saying here? Both Tory + New Labour = war and misery for Muslim countries. Ken is the 'acceptable' face of a party that kills Muslims for oil. I can't bring myself to vote for him and I ashamed that Salma is taking this position.
