First British Muslim Soldier Killed in War on Terror Print E-mail
Tuesday, 04 July 2006

Jabron Hashmi, a 24 year old Muslim soldier serving in the British Army was killed last Saturday on the front line in Afghanistan. Born in Pakistan, raised in Birmingham, he was the first British Muslim soldier to be killed in the "war on terror" since it began five years ago. The second western Muslim soldier if you include the death of Specialist Azha Ali of United States Army.

L/Cpl Hashmi's older brother Zeeshan, a former member of the Intelligence Corps, said: "Jabron was a committed soldier and a committed Muslim. He was fiercely proud of his Islamic background and he was equally proud of being British.

"He went to Afghanistan hoping to build bridges between the east and the west. He has always wanted to serve his country since he was a little boy. We were born just 40 minutes from the Afghan border so he was very excited to get back over there and experience the culture."

The Pakistani-born soldier migrated with his family when he was 12, and settled in Birmingham with his parents, two brothers and three sisters.

"He combined his love of Islam with the love of Britain and his main reason for joining the army was to make a difference," said his brother. "He certainly did that. Our brother was a cheeky confident and outgoing young man. He was very caring towards his family and friends and a very caring person. "

Whilst the moral position of the Taliban's actions are still up for debate on the whole, what are your thoughts on the death of this young man? Have the press given this story as much coverage as they gave to the london cartoon demonstration? Did this young man die a traitor or a martyr?

Tell us what you think.

What I think doesn't matter. The question I need to ask is why is it such a big deal when this guy gets killed that we need to show our empathy or sympathy. Yet when scores of Afghan Muslims are killed, women children etc, that is quite acceptable.

I think the message from the Talibans is quite clear, don't come on our soil and beam your smiles at us, expecting us to smile back at you.

If the tables were turned Hashmi would not hesitate in killing a Taliban or an afghan. I can understand to them they can't distinguish a soldier in a British uniform whether he/she be Pakistani or what. Likewise the British Forces can't distinguish a civilian from a fighter. So I guess both sides are equal.

And save me the heartache of HASHMI, HE KNEW THE RISKS. Building bridges, yeah whatever.

Leave the judgement of hell and paradise to God almighty. He has done his deeds and he will be punished and rewarded accordingly like we all will be, so lets sort ourselves out before it is to late and call others before it is too late for them. Peace

'if' he's fear of Allah made him join the army, and by joining he bought some mercy and respite to those who wouldnt have recieved it, (had he not been in afghanisatan) then surely we should not judge the individual harshly. it is easy sitting on our backside supporting resistance movements but life is about choices and lt hashmi made a difficult choice. that dosnt make him a traitor. on the other hand, we (brits) shouldnt be there at all,we are not a mercenary army at the beck adn call of karzai, but we can't blame a soldier, after all no one has said he tortured, killed or abused the afghans . and lets not pretend that the taliban are an enlightened bunch of people who would bring about an islamic revolution. the brought stability to afghanistan but failed in everything else.

its a mess but those people who have called hashmi a traitor should ask themselves before the war started what did they do to stop it, and now we are there what are they doing to bring them back home. probably nothing, they never do.

Whether he died as a traitor or martyr is not important. He joined the army to make "a difference". We should still question the actions of those who put him in that situation as long as soldiers continue to die. Ultimately he was forced into a position were each and every soldiers ethical morality and sense of duty has been compromised, somewhat unnecessarily.

He was a young man doing what he believed in, for that you have to give him credit. Those who call him a 'traitor' would never have the guts to take any real action, they are keyboard warriors only. RIP Jabron.

Atif, you guys will call any muslim who isn't violently opposed to the west & it's values a traitor. From where I stand that makes you a traitor.

salaam. What is important here is to remember and to clearly point out, that whether its the deaths of innocent civilians in Afghanistan, or the deaths of British soldiers (both muslim & non muslim, it is directly the result of this governments imperial designs and its invasion of this country. Bliar would never dream of sending his own sons or daughters to go and fight for this so called freedom & democracy. If we the people of this country want to see an end to these deaths then we need to call for the removal of these troops immedately. They are not their to serve & protect the people of this country. They are their purely working to serve the colonialist governments & its corrupt & oppresive policies.

Did he die as a traitor or martyr?Well he wasn't a traitor, as he fought for what he believed was right. He wasn't a martyr because he didn't die defending Islam or fighting a force that was against Islam.Heaven / Hell. If he read Salah and give zakat and performed Hajj then Inshallah he will go to Paradise, but then Allah knows what is best.Whatever this guy did, he will be judged by Allah. I didn't know him so I can not talk ill of him. But all I can do is Dawah for his soul,

"That Allah shows him mercy and that Allah helps ease his suffeings in the grave and that Allah helps him on the day of judgment and that on that day Allah shows favour towards his good deeds and reduces his bad. And where his good deeds fall in weight I pray that this dawah is presented to help this person."Ameen.

Brother hashmi knew what he let himself in for when he signed on the dotted line.. The total number of UK troops killed in action now stands at 13 followed by the total number of dead afghan civilians at roughly 3000.

As humans we cannot allow ourselves to continue to ignore the sufferings of those terrorised and intimidated time and time again. Instead of just talking about whether he (hsshmi)is a traitor because he was a patriot and died for his goverments policies we ought to be demanding from the mutts the majority places in power to withdraw troops

This is not a war.. totally illegal..

My thoughts and prayers are with the family of the deceased; A mother has lost her son,

be assured from him we've been sent, to him we shall surely return..

Allah alone is the judge, but lets imgaine a Sahaba was peacekeeping/fighting with the quraish agaisnt an army of the prothet mohammed (saw), Would the prothet applaud this sahaba, like wise, Only Allah knows the intentions of Hashimis actions, but he was part of the foreign force which is occupying muslim lands,a coalittion repsonsible for areail bombardment which has killsed hunfreds of innocent muslims. In Islamic law it is faraz to expel forign forces,so Hashimi was a suitbale target for any afghani citizen. ALlah knows best, w-salam.

ok lets see, the UK troops are EMPLOYED by the MoD so that makes them employees of the government thus entertaining a wage - Terrorists (Talebanese) have their land invaded, made homelss, probably had their enitre family, home, village wiped out and are they earning a wage? I'll let you be the judge of that, but it’s more than minimum wage.

Did the brother or kin not know when siging up during a declared state of war you will be commssioned? Did not the brother or kin know that the war on Terror meant combatting Muslim in Muslim lands (with exceptin of Dubai and some mothers)? This is not the same as France invading Britain where Muslims are on each side - or am I missing something.

Allah will judge accordingly InshAllah; don't forget intentions are judged by actions.

Enroling with the army means pledging an Allegiance to defend QUEEN and country. So I'm glad the Queen is safe - showering praise of such souls.

How many people did this brother kill in the line of duty sorryin this job?

Allah Knows Best, may he have mercy on all past, present and future - and give strength and wisdom tot he Mu'mins.

Do not comment on something that you know nothing or very little of. Do not judge others as this is solely the right of the Creator. Stop blaming others for your own misdeeds and provide constructive solutions to your own problems- do not just carry banners.

The man had more guts than some of you may ever dream of. Building bridges-Yes!!! this is what he truly believed in.

Innamal 'amaalo bin-niyyat.
Actions are dependant on Intentions.

May Allah bless his soul and may Allah bless us all i.e. Muslims and non-Muslims alike and guide us to the right path.

We cant say for certain what his intentions were, but from what is apparant, (that he went to fight for an occupying force against Muslims), we can say that it was not a good thing to do.Not only that he died while doing it.

And I think as Muslims, we need too judge by what we see, and leave the rest to Allah.

P.S. If we are too sensitive to condem the action of fighting Muslims alongside kufar, then this will only cause more confusion and others may follow in his footsteps.
